To think instant coffee is not a disaster?!

Hi all

Just had a friend over for a coffee and I mentioned my Nespresso machine was broken, so I only had Instant coffee. (Azera). She looked horrified, wrinkled her nose and said 'Oh god no. No one I know still drinks Instant. God, I hope you get that sorted before the birthday on Sunday or everyone will complain'.

Ok...so now I am totally paranoid. For me it is not a big deal. If someone only has instant, I drink it. However, for all the coffee snobs out there.....am I making a fatal mistake if I dont have my Nespresso machine back in time for my daughters birthday on Sunday? In total 9 kids and their parents are coming over to our place. This is actually stressing me out. I don't want coffee-gate come Monday morning!

Re pod machines and the environment, you can get reusable stainless steel pods now, you just fill them with coffee of your choice. I still wouldn’t bother with a pod machine, or any coffee machine though, a cafetière does the job.

MsTSwift · 14/12/2019 06:03

I allow myself my morning biodegradable pod then have instant for subsequent drinks Grin

AnnaFiveTowns · 14/12/2019 06:17

Wow! I never realised I was such a heathen. Would never occur to me to drink anything but instant coffee 😯

Becclescake · 14/12/2019 06:25

I buy a decent instant for the house, then Costa when out and about. Had a coffee machine once but it was too much faff.

User12879923378 · 14/12/2019 06:33

She's an idiot. I don't understand why people are so rude and childish. It's not like you're running a cafe. You can either borrow a cafetiere or give people a choice between instant and tea.

hoxtonbabe · 14/12/2019 06:44

We are a family of primarily tea drinkers and I’m fussy with that but I would never say “oh my how can you serve me PG from a teabag and not teapigs or Whittards loose leaf”

I usually have a jar of instant for the odd coffee drinker I have round and it’s usually the D’or stuff which I was told is quite nice however I recently purchased a dolce gusto machine ( for the hot chocolate) and it came with all sorts of coffees so I’ve been drinking coffee of late and as far as I can tell the pods do taste better than the instant I’ve tried in the past but not to the point I have to be rude to someone about it, lol

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 14/12/2019 07:02

I don't think I know anyone who has a coffee machine. Aren't they going out of fashion because they're so awful for the environment?
You'll get offered a mug of instant at mine and you can take it or leave it 🤷🏻‍♀️

hazell42 · 14/12/2019 07:09

I wouldn't drink instant coffee, and carry real coffee and a travel mug, that also doubles as a cafetiere, wherever I go, because I my motto is that life is too short to drink shit coffee. (It doesn't matter how 'posh' the instant coffee is, it's still shit coffee)
I probably wouldn't say the words 'shit coffee' out loud though. At least, not at a birthday party.

53rdWay · 14/12/2019 07:34

’I don’t think it’s a disaster just tell them ahead that it’s instant so they don’t get a shock.’

Actually lol-ing at the idea of advance notification of the coffee situation.

Can you imagine? “You’re welcome to sit in the kitchen while the kids play Hungry Hungry Hippos and rub Wotsits in each other’s hair, but I’m afraid I have some terrible news before you set foot over the threshold: I only have instant coffee. Not even a cafetière. I know this will come as a shock and I absolutely understand if you need some time to take in this sad news in private. I humbly beg you not to exclude me forever from your social circle for this heinous crime.”

At my house there’s Kenco from a jar or there’s tea. And it’s PG Tips. God knows how we have any friends left.

k1233 · 14/12/2019 07:44

I have a beautiful coffee machine that doesn't use pods. A delonghi pump espresso. Makes a fantastic cup of coffee. For work I just use the bodum plunger - I've had that 21 years, so it's doing good! I was never a fan of the pod machines so was super excited to find a ground coffee machine for a low price.

BillywigSting · 14/12/2019 07:52

I would rather have nothing than instant nine times out of ten (and drink tea in mils because she only ever has instant).

Azera is OK in a pinch with buckets of milk, couldn't drink it black.

I agree with pp if you can't get it fixed just get a (big) cafetiere and a bag of ground coffee. Bodum ones are good the filter actually does its job.

Vulpine · 14/12/2019 07:55

Makes a difference if you drink it black because theres nothing to disguise the taste - however you could put the instant in a cafetiere and pretend!

MurrayTheMonk · 14/12/2019 07:57

Don't tell anyone and I bet you 95% of people won't even notice an e other 5% might just have the good manners not to complain.
Coffee snobs are so absurd. It's a hot drink not the Holy Grail.

SaggingNorks · 14/12/2019 08:06

I cannot be arsed with real coffee. Such a faff. I have nestle espresso in a jar which is just as good I think.

hazell42 · 14/12/2019 08:07

Don't tell anyone and I bet you 95% of people won't even notice an e other 5% might just have the good manners not to complain.
Coffee snobs are so absurd.

Says no one who actually drinks coffee. I always notice. I might not complain, but I wouldn't drink it.
Just like people who drink coke can tell the difference between full fat and diet, or coke and pepsi, coffee drinkers can tell the difference between real and instant.
But I drink mine black with no sugar so, as someone said earlier, there is nothing to disguise the (shit) taste

SaskiaRembrandt · 14/12/2019 08:07

YABU to buy Azera because it's foul. It tastes like that nasty, powdered Mellow Birds stuff. The first time I tried it I was genuinely astonished by how awful it tasted.

RandomUsernameHere · 14/12/2019 08:14

Your friend was rude to complain, but if I thought someone only had instant I would ask for tea instead! Definitely wouldn't say anything though.

WatchingTheMoon · 14/12/2019 08:14

"Says no one who actually drinks coffee."

Aye right. I bet tons of people couldn't tell, they're just being snobs.

Vulpine · 14/12/2019 08:17

Lifes too short to drink shit coffee and shit wine.

evilharpyinapeartree · 14/12/2019 08:20

I wouldn’t drink instant and I’m not a snob. I also wouldn’t drink full fat coke because I don’t like it, and that doesn’t make me a snob either. If there was only instant on offer I would ask for a cup of tea (not fussy about brand as long as it’s very strong with hardly any milk) or a glass of water. I wouldn’t be an arsehole about it though.

And yes, if you’re used to ground coffee you can tell the difference, it’s completely different. Doesn’t make it bad, but it does have a particular taste that ground coffee doesn’t.

Collision · 14/12/2019 08:22

I prefer Azera

Vulpine · 14/12/2019 08:23

Do all the instant coffee lovers drink it black with no sugar?

53rdWay · 14/12/2019 08:23

Just like people who drink coke can tell the difference between full fat and diet, or coke and pepsi

Most people can’t actually tell Coke and Pepsi apart in a blind taste test although everyone thinks they can.

LaurieMarlow · 14/12/2019 08:24

i bet tons of people couldn't tell, they're just being snobs.

This is total bollocks. They are very different drinks. I have been served instant when not expecting it and of course I knew.

DilysPrice · 14/12/2019 08:24

Actually that reminds me - I’m having a bunch of mates over for pre-Xmas dinner soon so probably should get in a bag of something for the cafetière. (I’m a tea drinker and DH is a philistine, hence we only usually have freeze dried Cafe Direct).

Can any of you coffee aficionados please recommend me a good cafetière coffee? Ocado are offering me 100 options from twenty countries and I’m overwhelmed.
