Who will be the next Labour leader

I’m hoping Keir Starmer

Intelligent, center left and no concerns over his connections and political stance

Sensibly stayed in the background recently let’s hope he puts himself forward

I shall be rejoining the party again

Depends who's still got a seat. I'm not guessing until tomorrow.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 13/12/2019 00:07

That's called counting your chickens.

Wait and see who still has a seat...

NameChangeNugget · 13/12/2019 00:09

Keir Starmer would make an excellent leader of the opposition and get the party back on track

PoppyStellar · 13/12/2019 00:09

I hope Keir Starmer too. Or Jess Phillips.

Hingeandbracket · 13/12/2019 00:10

Jess Phillips for me !

Fr0g · 13/12/2019 00:11

Jess Phillips

Happyadventurer · 13/12/2019 00:11

I’m hoping it’s someone sensible like Jess Phillips

MrsBungle · 13/12/2019 00:11

I hope keir starmer too. Also love Jess phillips.

OVienna · 13/12/2019 00:14

Emily Thornberry is already being mooted...

AGnu · 13/12/2019 00:15

I was assured it would be a woman by 2 Labour supporters on my doorstep the other day. They were shocked I was talking about not voting Labour for reasons relating to women's rights & started mumbling a bit when I asked how many female leaders the Labour party had had. He eagerly informed me that technically they'd had one as an interim leader. My Hmm face made them change tack & they both assured me that the next Labour leader would almost certainly be a woman as if they knew something I didn't. I forgot to ask which woman they thought it would be, or why they thought it would be a woman at all... I also forgot to point out that I wasn't voting for some hypothetical future version of the Labour party & that if Labour did well then they'd probably be hanging on to JC for the foreseeable so whoever the next leader might be would be pretty irrelevant!

LookingforLemons · 13/12/2019 00:16

I do wonder what Corbyn is thinking as he watches all this.

Butteredtoast55 · 13/12/2019 00:17

I’d much prefer Jess Philips - there’s something I find a bit too slick about KS and it’s high time Labour had a woman leading the party.

MistyCloud · 13/12/2019 00:18

Keir OR Jess will do me.

Then I can go back to voting LABOUR!

AlunWynsKnee · 13/12/2019 00:21

Keir Starmer. It's his nominative destiny.

DowntownAbby · 13/12/2019 00:28

@OVienna oh god no, not Thornbury!

She's too smug and patronising. It would not go down well with floating voters.

Needs to be someone like David Miliband but no chance of that.

KS would be reasonable, I think.

DippyAvocado · 13/12/2019 00:30

Keir Starmer would be great, but I worry that in today's anti-expert world he would be seen as too "urban intellectual" for some. He doesn't seem like someone that much mud could be thrown at.

Please not Emily Thornberry - I think she would be widely disliked. That white van man comment will never die.

Dan Jarvis has been very quiet lately. I think he is mayor of Sheffield as well as an MP so probably too busy to become leader, but as an ex-army Northerner, he could have a broad appeal? Although I think he is a remainer in a very Brexity consituency. I like Jess Philipps too but sadly I think there's still too much misogyny for a strong female leader to do well.

AnneLovesGilbert · 13/12/2019 00:30

Hopefully Keir. Thornberry is awful. So condescending and superior.

ItsNearlyMorning · 13/12/2019 00:31

My ideal labour leader would be David Milliband.
Maybe he can take over Islington when Corbyn stands down?

Singlenotsingle · 13/12/2019 00:31

If not Thornberry, maybe Diane Abbott? (Shame she had odd shoes on today, on the wrong feet, but heyho).

BrickTop999 · 13/12/2019 00:33

Keir was an excellent DPP
I dont vote labour but he would make a strong leader

MangoStone · 13/12/2019 00:34

Ooh Keir Starmer with front bench of Jess Phillips Yvette Cooper David Lammy Hilary Benn etc etc

confusedandemployed · 13/12/2019 00:36

Hopefully Starmer. I like Corbyn a lot, but I accept he is divisive. Starmer is a more unifying figure.

DippyAvocado · 13/12/2019 00:36

If not Thornberry, maybe Diane Abbott? I think DA is even more unpopular than Corbyn.

AntiHop · 13/12/2019 00:38

I would be very happy if it was kier starmer.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 13/12/2019 00:39

I like Keir.

I don't see why it should be a woman. I want whomever is the most qualified and has the broadest appeal.
