Who will be the next Labour leader

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/12/2019 00:04

I’m hoping Keir Starmer

Intelligent, center left and no concerns over his connections and political stance

Sensibly stayed in the background recently let’s hope he puts himself forward

I shall be rejoining the party again

If I'm allowed to comment as a Tory voter, I don't think Corbyn being replaced will be enough while Momentum have their claws in the Labour Party. Rightly or wrongly they are seen as communists and I don't see Labour winning an election with them.

Lycidas · 13/12/2019 11:56

A woman now will pave the way, slightly improve the situation for labour in the next five years. Then Dan Jarvis will clear up in the election after that.

Hereyougosandwiches · 13/12/2019 12:43

Actually I'd really like David Lammy too, but good luck getting the British electorate to vote for a black man.

Absolutely not. Yet another hugely divisive and controversial leader is not what Labour need next

Fr0g · 13/12/2019 13:51

not the time for Stella Creasy? Corbyn will have to make his mind up about when to go first - although he's said he'll go, making his mind up about when will take an age.
Wd still prefer Jess Phillips

SillyUnMurphy · 13/12/2019 13:58

Yvette Cooper for me. Thornberry would be even more of a disaster than Corbyn. Abbott can’t even sodding dress herself. Jess Phillips, I’m not convinced. Starmer comes across as very pompous.

SillyUnMurphy · 13/12/2019 14:00

Also just to say that John Smith was the greatest PM we sadly never got to have Sad

Cremebrule · 13/12/2019 14:48

I don’t think it should be woman for the sake of being a woman but Yvette Cooper would be good. Liz Kendall would have been a possible but I think she lost her seat. The problem will be that momentum will try and force the selection of someone far left that has no chance. At some point labour has to decide if it’s wants to stick to a specific ideology or get elected and have a chance to have some influence. A first step would be being a decent opposition and making sure Boris is held to account and challenged over the next 5 years.

ginghambox · 13/12/2019 14:53

Momentum will go for joint leaders in. Rebecca Long- Bailey and her eyebrows.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 13/12/2019 14:57

@SillyUnMurphy I completely agree with you regarding John Smith. I was saying the same thing to friends on Wednesday. If he hadn’t such an untimely death I think the UK and the world would be a much different, kinder place.

Puppymum2018 · 13/12/2019 14:59

My husband has seen John Smith give a talk very inspirational - he would have made such a difference :-(

MurrayTheMonk · 13/12/2019 14:59

Dear god please not Long Bailey. Every time I hear her interviewed I want to put my foot through the radio. She talks utter nonsense.

ItalianinLondon · 13/12/2019 15:38

Not as much nonsense as Pidcock, and I'm so glad it cannot now be her!

Yvette Cooper for me.

VirginiaCreeper · 13/12/2019 15:43

I suspect it will be the dull and dim Rebecca Long Bailey.

Momentum won't allow Jess Phillips to be elected. She is the perfect solid traditional working class labour MP but she's not the puppet of anyone. She is passionate, charismatic and intelligent. The far left hate her.
They will elect a Corbyn clone for now and only when they lose another election will they realise what they need to do to get elected. Then Jess will be the one.

crosstalk · 14/12/2019 00:29

Would Andy Burnham come back? He and Jess have all the credentials. Momentum and their cronyism just buggered the Labour party. Has anyone heard an interview with Seumas Milne yet? Jon Lansmann just sat there.

I didn't vote Labour or Tory but for heaven's sake we need a solid, assertive and reputable opposition to what will be an overweening government.

user1471439240 · 14/12/2019 01:06

Long - Bailey will be elected by the Unite bloc vote. They just didn’t go far enough left this time. Lessons will be learned.

HeronLanyon · 14/12/2019 01:18

I think et has been impressive recently but surely the ‘white van man’ incident means she would be counterproductive particularly given some of the realities behind the Tory victory.

KS is my mp and an acquaintance. Impressive and seemingly a balanced inclusive thoughtful mp. Good record as DPP. Worried he would be seen as urban elite lawyer (and I think that matters I’m afraid).

Jess Phillips is extremely impressive as an mp but I personally don’t think she has the skills for leader - I can’t believe she would be able (or want) to make the compromises and political adjustments needed to bring unity and strength to the Labour Party.

Tricky.

cherish123 · 14/12/2019 01:36

Yvette Cooper or Keir Starmer. I felt really sad about the way Labour have become. They seem to stand for nothing and have no vision. Rebecca Long-Bailey is an absolute no-no. She's just JC in a dress.

Trewser · 14/12/2019 07:38

I can't think of a single person who'd be any good.

WeshMaGueule · 14/12/2019 08:01

Actually Labour have had two women as interim leaders and I would suggest the sample is too small to be statistically significant to prove Labour is more sexist than the Tories

FoxFoxSierra · 14/12/2019 08:28

I love Emily Thornberry but the media hates her so she would do no better than JC in an election. Diane Abbott - ditto. Its depressing to see people still going on about her having odd shoes on on here when that was proven to be a photoshop image days ago but that is nothing on what the press would do to her as leader.

Jess Phillips would be good imo or Keir Starmer

AGnu · 14/12/2019 20:20

Hmm... I'm looking at the form to join the LP... They want to know my "gender" - male/female/other. Now, I do have long hair, but I've also been doing DIY today... I'm a bit confused so I think I must be "other." 🤷

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 14/12/2019 20:26

The next leader must be a woman. To the point where they should have an all-female shortlist. Rayner or Creasy for me.

NetballHoop · 14/12/2019 20:37

Kier Starmer for me though I'd fully understand if he decided not to put himself forward for all media attention.

I feel we are doomed to be ruled by Donald/Boris types for a long time to come as no one with any real sense of family will ever put themselves in that place.

AufderAutobahn · 14/12/2019 21:13

I would love Yvette Cooper to be leader. I voted for Jeremy Corbyn to be leader in 2015 but he was totally the wrong person for the job. I think Labour needs to be torn down from its current state and rebuilt completely if it is to have a chance of being in power within even the next 10 years. We need a sensible, trustworthy leader who appeals to a wide range of voters. We need someone who people will trust to move the party from the scourge of antisemitism and truly represent the communities who have felt abandoned by Corbyn's Labour.
