I’m hoping Keir Starmer

Intelligent, center left and no concerns over his connections and political stance

Sensibly stayed in the background recently let’s hope he puts himself forward

I shall be rejoining the party again

If it's Jess Philips that would be fantastic for the Conservative party

Harpingon · 16/12/2019 14:31

Keir Starmer is based in London and is a remainer who blocked brexit, although he seems very good at his job I think there is still a lot of resentment in the north about the betrayal of the working class man. He would not be a vote winner but would do well in parliament against Johnson. He would make a good deputy and could steer someone else as leader.

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2019 14:34

Four years is a long time Brexit will be a reality by then and not necessarily one that is as good as people think it will be. People remember his stance now but by then, could be ok.

The Northern thing I’m not sold on as an issue. But I live in London so defer

Like I said before I really don’t see the person being elected in March being the leader going into the next election in possibly 5 years time. Whoever gets the job will have to have resilience as it will be so disheartening going up against Boris for the next 5 years at PMQs etc.

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2019 15:21

It would be wouldn’t it. Demoralising. It’ll take a strong character but I guess as people are running they know what they’re in for, somewhat.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 16/12/2019 16:23

Week in week out for five years facing Boris. Every time you open your mouth you know that he is going to ridicule you over what happened even if it’s not relevant. I used to watch his London mayoral questions and cringe.

Fr0g · 18/12/2019 00:14

@Wincher - yes, aware of that, my point was that Corbyn is so indecisive, who knows how old the child might be before he actually goes.

Unles the decision is taken out of his hands Grin Wine Wine

What this discussion is throwing up is that no one is any good! There’s literally no one. All the decent centre people have been sidelined or cleared out by the idiots who now run this party.

Most labour front bench didn’t want Brexit. Apart from JC and a few others. Keir Starmer isn’t alone in not wanting Brexit. Many possible candidates are against it and voted against Teresa Mays deal so now we have a worse one!

Brexit won’t be over quickly. There is years of wrangling over trade ahead of us and our fishing rights will be fought over. We need the EU market but the price will be high. Silly us!

Labour must win power to do anything. Being left wing doesn’t win. Being nationalist does. Just look at Scotland and the Conservative rhetoric. Someone who understands security, not afraid to be British and a supporter of the armed forces is what’s needed. Working people like strong leaders. Someone not wed to Momentum and student politics is vital and someone with gravitas. And that’s precisely no-one! What a mess.

I agree!

Trewser · 18/12/2019 08:38

In fact, I am not even interested in who they pick as it's completely irrelevant. In five years when Brexit has taken shape it might be more interesting.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 18/12/2019 10:27

It is a shame Dan Jarvis isn’t in the running. I could see him doing a good job but not with momentum pulling the strings in the party. What a shambolic mess.

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2019 10:48

As much as I’m a bit gneh when they roll out Blair in the news his criticism was right.

MarshaBradyo · 18/12/2019 10:49

I thought of Dan too haven’t heard from him in a while.

Here's a +1 for Stella Creasey

The PM of New Zealand is a woman with a young baby but it hasn't stopped her from doing a good job has it?
