I’m hoping Keir Starmer

Intelligent, center left and no concerns over his connections and political stance

Sensibly stayed in the background recently let’s hope he puts himself forward

I shall be rejoining the party again

Not a woman for the sake of it, please.
The best person, male or female, black, white or with green stripes, who cares, but just the best person.
I like Keir Starmer but I need to look at others more closely before making my mind up.

Jillyhilly · 15/12/2019 11:39

Yes, Ruth Davidson had (has?) the Boris factor.

Anyway I guess a lot if this is moot because from what I read it will take the most unholy battle to prise Momentum’s hands off the steering wheel.

I voted for Boris but I am now going to join Labour in the hope of having the opportunity to help the moderates elect a decent candidate. The Party, Its great history and legacy, and the good it can do in opposition and in government, is too important to be left in its current state.

Stephen Kinnock is the only person ive seen who i think might work. Shame about his dad.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/12/2019 12:10

I think much of the Boris appeal is about that he is ruthless and determined

People want an element of that for someone who is PM

The persona of bumbling Boris is liked no doubt about it but people see through it

@Fr0g not the time for Stella Creasy purely because she's just had a baby and is on maternity leave (the first MP to have official maternity cover for her constituency work). Who knows, maybe she will go for it anyway, but I'm not sure she would want to spend all the necessary time campaigning/pressing the flesh when she is meant to be enjoying time off with her baby.

Harpingon · 16/12/2019 09:21

Jess Phillips, Keir Starmer as deputy. Jess is the people on the streets choice but if momentum don't like her.

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/12/2019 09:57

Stephen Kinnock was just on Radio 5 Live. He was very impressive but says he won't run for leadership. Hope he ends up on the Opposition front bench.

fedup21 · 16/12/2019 10:01

I like Keir Starmer but DH thinks he won’t appeal to any Northern leavers.

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2019 10:26

Keir has the best odds apparently.

AngelsSins · 16/12/2019 12:41

Not a woman for the sake of it, please

Not a posh, straight, white man for the sake of it please, we’ve had more than enough of those.

Heatingson · 16/12/2019 12:45

I find Stephen Kinnock really plausible too but have heard he won’t stand. It’s a shame as he seems considered and balanced.

Hont1986 · 16/12/2019 12:55

Oh god, please not Jess Phillips.

Kier seems OK, but I hope the party doesn't backslide into centrism again.

Lllot5 · 16/12/2019 13:09

I think they will choose a woman regardless of who the best person is. ( not suggesting a woman wouldn’t be the best person btw)
So Jess Phillips Rebecca Long Bailey Angela Rayner. All a bit left wing. Yvette Cooper is mid/ left so maybe her?

fedup21 · 16/12/2019 13:10

I hope the party doesn't backslide into centrism again

I think it will have to.

memberofseven · 16/12/2019 13:24

I wish Darren Jones would stand. Has retained a traditionally Tory seat in Bristol. Very sensible. He's only a backbencher though so unlikely he will even put himself forward but I wish he would. Labour Party tried to get him deselected in Bristol. Says it all.

flopsytheflatcat · 16/12/2019 13:36

Jess Phillips

AllideasAndNoAction · 16/12/2019 13:39

Well Emily has blown it now, even if she sues and wins. People already think she's patronising and horribly superior so today's little story, whether true or not, will do nothing to change anyone's opinion on that.

AllideasAndNoAction · 16/12/2019 13:42

Jess Phillips would be woefully out of her depth and she's too much of a motormouth/loose cannon.

Lonelycrab · 16/12/2019 13:45

Keir Starmer I think is the best choice.

ThisIsSanta · 16/12/2019 13:55

Emily Thornbury needs to withdraw from any potential leadership. No one in that should allow themselves to get tangled in a “she said” slanging match.

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2019 14:01

“People can slag me off as long as it’s true, I can take it on the chin. But they can’t make up shit about me - and if they do, I have to take it to the courts.”
She might want to rethink her tone, she sounds like she’s down the pub.

ChongADong · 16/12/2019 14:07

I like Jess Philips too.
Agree about David Miliband. I met him a few times during the leadership challenge with Ed and he was lovely, self effacing
and fit

Rosehip10 · 16/12/2019 14:07

The political realities which labour need to start grasping ASAP are that people like Angela Raynor would sadly be destroyed by the right wing press - its disgusting but I don't think her "backstory" would be an asset at all.

MarshaBradyo · 16/12/2019 14:09

‘And fit’ even though you crossed it out it helps if you’re Labour to look a certain way. Even with a similar approach to Ed he would have got an easier ride in the papers.
