I’m hoping Keir Starmer

Intelligent, center left and no concerns over his connections and political stance

Sensibly stayed in the background recently let’s hope he puts himself forward

I shall be rejoining the party again

I am reluctantly wondering about Stephen Kinnock. I'm cross with him at his undermining of Corbyn because he should have accepted the vote of the party.
I like Jess Phillips but she's a bit of a loose cannon.
Kinnock would be history repeating itself with his father's actions to sort out Militant.

Ffsseriously · 15/12/2019 01:44

I just don't think jess Phillips is bright and quick enough, she has never really impressed me. Barry gardiner is very clever and likable but definitely too close to JC. We need someone with charisma humour and intelligence. I would like Andy Burnham sensible, not London intellectual socialist and likeable. With solid sensible ideas.

AiryFairyMum · 15/12/2019 02:04

Angela Rayner is a possibility.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/12/2019 02:15

Angela Rayner is certainly a possibility if Corbyn, McDonnell and Momentum have their way

I hope not Labour need to move away from Corbyn and co to become electable

I’ve never been overly impressed when I have heard her being questioned over polices

maybe Diane Abbott? (Shame she had odd shoes on today, on the wrong feet, but heyho).

How do people who use the internet not know what photoshop is?

Barry Gardiner for me, hes good at arguing on QT and when being interviewed, and there doesn't seem to be any shit for the MSM to make up or exaggerate about him

Nat6999 · 15/12/2019 02:33

I would like to think that My MP Louise Haigh whilst probably not having been around for long enough for the position of leader would be brought to the front bench, she has been shadow police minister for the last parliament, fights for women's rights & welfare reforms. As an MP if you ask for help from her, she is straight on it & doesn't stop until she has things sorted out, she always goes to the top & gets what she thinks is right.

notangelinajolie · 15/12/2019 03:44

Whoever, they decide on I think they need a real personality this time. I like Jess Phillips and I think she would more than match Boris at Prime Ministers Questions. I'm not keen on Kier Starmer and I'm not really sure why - I think a little bit of the reason is because he's a lawyer and that stilts his conversation sometimes. I think Jess would be much more natural and relatable to the 'common man/woman' and appeal to those lost labour voters. She does wear her heart on her sleeve though which may be problematic.

ItalianinLondon · 15/12/2019 08:14

I fear that a big part of the issue with Corbyn was that he came to the job with zero front bench experience and had very little idea of how to run a parliamentary political party. I think the PLP might have had a bit more tolerance if his ability in the logistical aspects of the job had been better. But he seemed to have no clue of party management inside the HoC.

For that reason, I feel like it has to be somebody with front bench / ministerial experience. And for that reason, not Jess Phillips. I would like to see her in a front bench role though, or as a committee chair.

Trewser · 15/12/2019 09:13

Keir Starmer is a London remainer and so would be terrible.

I think they are all toxic, so need an interim leader until the dust has settled.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/12/2019 09:19

I think Jess Phillips has a tendency to make crowd pleasing statements little substance at times

She is passionate about her role but she is no where near experienced to be leader of the party at this stage. Maybe at some point but not now we shall just have another populist type crowd pleasing leader

Trewser · 15/12/2019 09:20

Anyone who is big on Twitter should be avoided.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 15/12/2019 10:41

To the pp who said the next leader must be a woman. Why? I personally think it should be the best person for the job, mam, woman, cabbage from Corbyn’s allotment. I highly doubt that the person elected next year will be the one leading Labour into the next election possibly in 5 years time.

bluebell34567 · 15/12/2019 10:44

JC doesnt resign so whats the point?

bluebell34567 · 15/12/2019 10:47

agree with @EnthusiasmIsDisturbed, she needs some more experience.

Jillyhilly · 15/12/2019 10:52

To the pp who said the next leader must be a woman. Why? I personally think it should be the best person for the job, mam, woman, cabbage from Corbyn’s allotment.

It’s the same old identity politics nonsense.
The left is so obsessed with it that they think everyone else feels the same way, and actually most normal people either couldn’t give a monkeys about this stuff, or think it’s all bonkers.

By insisting that it has to be a woman / working class / northerner / whatever, they limit the shortlist and the prospective talent to approximately 3 people, which pretty much guaranteed they’ll end up with someone rubbish. At a local level it certainly matters where someone is from, but most ordinary people don’t actually make a decision about which party to vote for based on the gender of its leader because most people aren’t obsessed with gender, race and identity. It’s totally the wrong approach, as usual. I mean has it escaped people’s attention that you don’t get any more male/white/Southern/Londoner/posh than Boris Johnson, and he’s absolutely cleaned up in this election!

AlunWynsKnee · 15/12/2019 10:58

Jilly the problem for Labour is it gives the other parties an easy stick to beat them with.

Jillyhilly · 15/12/2019 11:04

You mean the fact the Labour has never had a woman leader Alun? I do get that but again where is the proof that ordinary working folk really spend much time worrying about this? Good ideas, charisma, the ability to work with the press, sense of humour, drive and the ability to bring the centre along with them. Those have to be the criteria, surely.

ForalltheSaints · 15/12/2019 11:06

A leader chosen by Labour has to realise it should be for ten years. I think that they need to be someone who has not spent most of their life in the London 'bubble'.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2019 11:11

Agree with Jilly (we agree on this! Yeh Grin)

Johnson is London bubble and more. Labour is woeful at understanding who should lead their party. Only Blair managed to get through that far left quagmire recently.

AllideasAndNoAction · 15/12/2019 11:14

If not Thornberry, maybe Diane Abbott?

I'm going to assume that that was a joke.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2019 11:14

I think the Diane Abbotts are from solid Cons voters ;

Jillyhilly · 15/12/2019 11:23

Well there’s a difference between “living in the London bubble” and being London-based with a real vision of how to help the whole country. I don’t think anyone should be discounted early based on a bunch of superficial reasons when there is a desperate need for talent and a new approach.

Channel 4 ran focus groups before the election of northern seat Labour leavers who were thinking about voting for Boris. It was really interesting. They didn’t care that he was posh and a Londoner. They didn’t care how many kids he had, or even that he might not always tell the truth. They actually liked him, thought he was a character, and trusted his drive I.e. that he would get Brexit done.

Jillyhilly · 15/12/2019 11:24

Yay Marsha! Smile

AlunWynsKnee · 15/12/2019 11:24

Jilly, yes. I agree about the type of person needed too. A Ruth Davidson type would be great but I don't know if we've got someone like that.

billysboy · 15/12/2019 11:25

Diane Abbot for sure !
