AIBU to tell colleague they’re a spitting image of an infamous killer

Said new colleague looks so much like Chris Watts it’s alarming... followed this case closely & while it wasn’t massive news in my country it does get press. It was well known worldwide. I feel like if someone looked like Dahmer or Bundy it would be ok to say...but considering it’s a fairly recent case & the grim circumstances of it, is it best left unsaid? It’s constantly on the tip of my tongue wanting to spill out this odd information. But he is quite reserved like the real Chris Watts so it might make him uncomfortable!

But did you watch it to "honour and remember" the victim? Because unless you are claiming that nobody has mocked you

Rainonmyguitar · 27/10/2019 16:39

homeworkery you're actually one of the folks I'm referring to in my previous post so I'd rather not engage with you.

UOkhun77 · 27/10/2019 16:43

My friend’s husband looks like a fatter version of Chris Watts. Don’t think I’ll mention it.

TotinEggs · 27/10/2019 16:47

I’m another who’s surprised that so many posters hadn’t heard of the case at all. It was a massive news story, in the papers, online news sources, tv, radio etc for quite some time and is still referenced often.
To be unaware of it doesn’t somehow give you moral superiority.

Nutjobby · 27/10/2019 17:02

I work with someone who looks the spitting image of Heinrich Himmler. I'm sure he's a perfectly nice man but it's such a strong likeness that I do feel distinctly uneasy around him.

homeworkery · 27/10/2019 17:09

Well I'd gathered that @Rainonmyguitar Grin

It's amusing you've spectacularly missed the point I was trying to make and instead taken to calling everyone "arseholes"

ashtrayheart · 27/10/2019 17:14

To be unaware of it doesn’t somehow give you moral superiority.

who said it does?! I'm painfully aware that a lot of news passes me by, as I don't tend to watch the news or read news stories unless social media highlights a particular event to me. That makes me quite ignorant a lot of the time; I certainly don't think I'm superior and doubt others on here feel that they are, either.

PearlsBeforeWine · 27/10/2019 17:18

I do wish people would just admit that they're ghoulish fuckers salivating over the tragedy of others...

Ginger1982 · 27/10/2019 17:21

"Ian Brady was arguably easy enough on the eye"

OP you have a very warped mind 🙄

penisbeakers · 27/10/2019 17:39

Christ onna bike.. Biscuit

AufderAutobahn · 27/10/2019 17:39

You would have to have very little self control to have to try not to tell someone they look like a killer.

Don't do it, OP. It would achieve nothing and actually make the poor guy think you were deliberately being hurtful.

HappyHarlot · 27/10/2019 17:42

If someone was to tell me I looked like Myra Hindley I would find it really odd, even though it's an old and high profile case.

My passport photo makes me look like her Sad

Cryalot2 · 27/10/2019 17:43

No, why would you even think of it?

OatyGoaty · 27/10/2019 17:55

Weird. Reported.

Butchyrestingface · 27/10/2019 17:58

"Ian Brady was arguably easy enough on the eye"

Weird. Reported

Seriously, what? Hmm.

timshelthechoice · 27/10/2019 18:24

Well in our country we try to honour the victims more in press coverage & Uk docos too. American press coverage tends to glorify killers.

Oh, bullshit! They're reviled for the scum they are. The sentiment was that Watt should be on death row and he weaseled out of it by pleading guilty to 5 counts of murder, 5, given that his wife was pregnant. There is no 'honouring the victims' by being a part of raking over someone's ghastly end, just being a straight up ghoul and gore tourist. At least people should own that.

FadingStar · 27/10/2019 19:20

Of course people in the police force and journalists never lie....

😉 Touché

Muckycat · 27/10/2019 19:35

Just had to look up CW and there must be thousands of blokes who look a bit like him. Hardly a distinctive looking guy! Don't mention it, too odd.

Zoflorabore · 27/10/2019 19:40

Never heard of him.

Years ago I got told quite a few times that I looked like Monica Lewinsky Grin
It was when she got caught having “sexual relations” with that man.

What one person sees doesn’t mean everyone does.

Are you a bit obsessed with serial killers? My best friend is.

FadingStar · 27/10/2019 19:46

My my, the "true crime community" are a tad defensive about their hobby

Sigh...Is it so wrong to find out about the monstrous people who walk amongst us? Think about the crimes? Would you prefer if crimes were buried, never to be thought about or explored? Never to learn from Bundy, Ridgeway or Brady? I honestly don't get people like you.

catsmother · 27/10/2019 20:00

Why on earth would you even begin to consider saying something so unkind to a colleague?

He's hardly likely to find it a compliment is he? Maybe he's already aware of a resemblance but, as described up thread, feels a natural discomfort and revulsion in recognising that. Most sane and respectful people would try to push the 'connection' from their mind and would almost certainly find it very distressing to have it confirmed that others have noticed it too.

So .... you remain professional and you not only keep your mouth shut, but keep your observations to yourself lest other similarly emotionally challenged co-workers decide to make his appearance the subject of a bullying campaign. As recounted by a previous poster whose partner was horribly targeted like this for something he couldn't help.

Jeez. What the hell would you hope to achieve by shooting your mouth off? Unless you actually enjoy hurting people unnecessarily.

Zoflorabore · 27/10/2019 20:01

Upon googling him i remembered his horrific crimes. I would hardly say he is “infamous” but that is not what this is about.

No good will tell a man that he looks like another man who committed such heinous crimes against his wife and children.

No offence op but this is a very weird thread.

DorisTheFlorist · 27/10/2019 20:14

I think if a colleague looks like a murderer you should definitely call them out on it. Preferably in an all staff meeting. At the end when the boss says 'any more business' point and him and say 'John look like a serial killer, it makes me feel uncomfortable'. It would be career enhancing.
