AIBU to tell colleague they’re a spitting image of an infamous killer

Said new colleague looks so much like Chris Watts it’s alarming... followed this case closely & while it wasn’t massive news in my country it does get press. It was well known worldwide. I feel like if someone looked like Dahmer or Bundy it would be ok to say...but considering it’s a fairly recent case & the grim circumstances of it, is it best left unsaid? It’s constantly on the tip of my tongue wanting to spill out this odd information. But he is quite reserved like the real Chris Watts so it might make him uncomfortable!

Worra I can't speak for anyone else, but I myself was extremely sheltered. I knew NOTHING of man's cruelty. One night I was having fun with mates, went to the loo, came back and they were gone. Asked the couple Wtf My friend was here where is she? She said that my friend and her mates all tumbled into a taxi and left. Naturally I was all WTF? I couldn't believe my friend did that! But anyway I got into a black taxi and to cut a long story short he didn't take me home he took me to a forest park where he assaulted me until I was banging on the windows so much and screaming like Damien in the Omen he just drove until I was dumped at home.

Since then I have had an obsession almost with working out that mindset and also taking so much pleasure in any time that women get justice. So sue me!

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2019 21:30

So it's an obsession for you fading

But surely you'd agree for the majority, it's entertainment/a hobby? Otherwise it wouldn't be so popular would it?

FadingStar · 27/10/2019 21:34

But you and I will never know that, Worra, will we? The mocking on this thread is just horrible. I was honestly twisted and turned all day because of the armchair psychologists on this thread....they know fuck all!

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2019 21:39

But you and I will never know that, Worra, will we?

Well given that there are millions of true crime 'fans' all over the world, I think it's pretty safe to assume it's mostly entertainment for them, rather than a form of therapy.

Either way, people like what they like. I just think they should own it rather than pretending it's to remember and honour the victims, as the OP did.

somecakefather · 27/10/2019 21:40

But surely you'd agree for the majority, it's entertainment/a hobby? Otherwise it wouldn't be so popular would it?

It's not 'entertainment' for me. I don't get a buzz from watching true crime. It's the psychology behind the crime that mainly interests me, what went wrong to make someone a killer etc.

FadingStar · 27/10/2019 21:42

Maybe. Worra I don't know anyone else's mind. I just know my own. And I know for ME, I love to see justice.✊

somecakefather · 27/10/2019 21:47

Some of the people on here are so ridiculous that I'm actually wondering if they mistakenly think we're watching blood and gore and actual real-life murders? We're not you know.

FadingStar · 27/10/2019 21:50

And also Worra, we can never know the reasons behind people's fascination with true crime. You didn't know mine! I think the people mocking us are total fucking douchebags actually.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 27/10/2019 21:51

A d there is the problem....the people who have been murdered are REAL. While you may not be watching their actual murders, their pain a f fear was real.

FadingStar · 27/10/2019 21:58

Earring, you aren't saying anything new! Ffs my dad was murdered by loyalist paramilitaries when he was in his work van. How much more do you people have to hear before you give us a fucking break?

FadingStar · 27/10/2019 22:00

I read true crime. I watch the odd documentary on it. I'm not evil ffs.

WalkofShame · 27/10/2019 22:00

This ^ is one of the issues I have with this as entertainment. It creates people who think thy know what they’re talking about in relation to offending behaviour and they don’t. They read sensationalised accounts of crime and think it’s true. Someone upthread was talking about critical thinking in relation to people who have an issue with this stuff, without a sense of irony. If you want to know what drives behaviour, study forensic psychology, don’t read true crime weekly or the mind of a murderer and this this is true.

somecakefather · 27/10/2019 22:02

Uh yes we know that. I can watch a true crime documentary and cry for the victim and feel rage at the killer and want justice for the victim.

Again, because you don't understand someone's interest in something, you assume we're heartless monsters. There's tons of true crime on mainstream TV, why are you acting so holier than thou?

FadingStar · 27/10/2019 22:04

I don't give two shits anymore.

somecakefather · 27/10/2019 22:06

Hahaha you're really, really overthinking this, seriously. You don't have a clue what you're talking about.

WalkofShame · 27/10/2019 22:14

How do you work that out?

I worked with offenders for many years, I’ve had countless conversations with people who want to know gory details. I’ve had people tell me (incorrectly) about criminal behaviours based on those sorts of TV shows. I’ve worked with a psychologist who can’t get a job in practice who ended up presenting one of these shows. I’ve seen the people that I work with massively misrepresented on these shows just to create a narrative which is more dramatic.

It’s nonsense but it keeps getting recommissioned because people watch it.

ashtrayheart · 27/10/2019 22:20

Agree with you @WalkofShame and I do watch these programmes sometimes, in the same way I watch other trash tv!

I've just completed a forensic psychology module as part of my degree and the reality is much less dramatic; these programmes are the equivalent of a Daily Mail article for titillation and ratings. 'Wives with knives' anyone...

Tinkerbell456 · 27/10/2019 22:30

Hmmm....no. Why would you? To disturb the poor bloke over something he can’t help?

Inappropriatefemale · 12/01/2020 08:14

I know nobody has commented on this thread for a couple of months but I have followed the Chris Watts Family Annihilation case since it first happened in August 2018.

I’m very much a true crime follower and this case shook me to my core and I was obsessed with it for ages and I have watched so many You Tube vids on it.

Lifetime have made a movie about it and it’s on the Lifetime channel on January 25 and I will be watching.

Shan’Ann Watts would have been 36 on Friday and her baby, Nico, would’ve been 1 at the end of this month, Bella would be a kindergarten and CeCe would be 5 later this year, it was an awful thing that he did and if you have listened to the February confession that the FBI covertly recorded then you will here Watts describe murder like he was describing a day in his life, it’s completely chilling and he spoke of it like it ‘happened’ to him and he didn’t cause it, truly narcissistic and nobody had a bad word to say about him ever until all this.Sad

Skysblue · 12/01/2020 15:59

OP that would be a very weird thing to tell someone and they would like you less for it, rightly so. Keep your thoughts on it to yourself.

Patroclus · 12/01/2020 17:19

Rose West was very good looking when she was younger.

KarmaStar · 12/01/2020 18:11

Yabvu and pretty nasty tbh.would you like to be told you look like a murderer?
Leave him alone fgs.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/01/2020 18:22
