AIBU to tell colleague they’re a spitting image of an infamous killer

Said new colleague looks so much like Chris Watts it’s alarming... followed this case closely & while it wasn’t massive news in my country it does get press. It was well known worldwide. I feel like if someone looked like Dahmer or Bundy it would be ok to say...but considering it’s a fairly recent case & the grim circumstances of it, is it best left unsaid? It’s constantly on the tip of my tongue wanting to spill out this odd information. But he is quite reserved like the real Chris Watts so it might make him uncomfortable!

@SoyDora I’m not sick thank you ! & some cases really shake you & that doesn’t mean you are sick. It’s honouring their memory to remember them. It is fascinating watching liars lie on camera & their mask slipping. Watching a narcissist at work yes. Absolutely.

No it would be “hey you look like someone that did that”
Not “you look like someone who would do that”

I will keep quiet !

The consensus is clear.

PanamaPattie · 27/10/2019 11:39

I had to google him as I had no idea who he was. Meh.

ThighThighOfthigh · 27/10/2019 11:39

Someone told my I looked like Kathy Bates in Misery, never liked Kathy Bates since.

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2019 11:40

It’s honouring their memory to remember them.

It's pretty sick to pretend that's what you're doing.

If any of my loved ones were murdered and some dick pretended they were 'honouring their memory', instead of admitting to finding the murder 'fascinating' and entertaining, I'd honestly want to punch them straight in the face.

And I'm the least violent person anyone could ever meet.

SoyDora · 27/10/2019 11:40

I think treating the murder of multiple people as entertainment is sick, actually.
And how is it honouring the memory of the victims? Do you think their families are comforted knowing you’re taking pleasure from discussing it on true crime forums?

Exactly this.

prawnsword · 27/10/2019 11:41

@ThighThighOfthigh that’s quite the iconic role

"It’s honouring their memory to remember them" Hmm

Don't be ridiculous. You can't remember them because you don't know them and never did. Do you think their families are honoured that you are poring over this "fascinating" footage?

MitziK · 27/10/2019 11:43

'Oooh! Has anybody told you that you look just like the murderer Chris Watts? You don't know who he is? It's a big topic of conversation in the True Crime community I'm a part of...' [goes on to describe in graphic detail what he did].

Great idea. He'll know instantly that

a) You're weird.

b) You're into serial killers and murderers.

c) You're weird.

d) You don't have any filter or think this is an OK thing to say to somebody.

e) You're weird and a bit creepy. As are your internet 'friends'.

f) You're to be avoided. Because you're weird, creepy, your online 'friends' are equally weird, you have no filter for appropriate conversations and he should make sure he's never left alone with you in case you're one of those people who send serial killers marriage proposals and get stalky towards somebody they like. Such as someone who resembles one of your serial killers.

FizzyGreenWater · 27/10/2019 11:44

Well I had to google too, as soon as I did of course I remembered the case - absolutely awful - but I didn't remember either his name or what he looked like.

Which says it all really - he just isn't very distinctive, he has an extremely common look.

KatherineJaneway · 27/10/2019 11:44

To what end? How would it benefit you or them? It wouldn't, so best to keep quiet.

prawnsword · 27/10/2019 11:45

That’s an odd thing to say, when crimes happen they become news. crime is a subject. Absolutely the privacy of families should be respected. I’m not sure how anyone would feel until it happens to them. Maybe you wouldn’t want your loved one to be yesterday’s news. Who knows.

OP posts:
SoyDora · 27/10/2019 11:46

They’d never be yesterday’s news to the people who knew and cared about them. I wouldn’t give a shit about anyone else.

homeworkery · 27/10/2019 11:46

@prawnsword on the thread about the man who had gone to comfort his ex after the death of her daughter you wrote this....

"Actually if a loved one died in a gory way, not sure I’d be wanting to tell people or even think about how they got disembowelled, nature of specifics of injuries etc unless asked or pushed. At that moment it would be too hard to think about how they suffered. If he in any way was bringing these things up unprovoked, it doesn’t sit well to me. When someone dies tragically, often times gossip mongers come out of the woodwork. Acting like they were best friends & get an emotional payoff from the drama of it all. their involvement can appear selfless, but they get something out of it too."

Make your mind up Grin

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2019 11:47

Maybe you wouldn’t want your loved one to be yesterday’s news. Who knows.

I'd rather that than have their tragic deaths become other people's entertainment.

That I do know.

prawnsword · 27/10/2019 11:48

Yes I write to serial killers & propose marriage & fangirl over them.

Seriously some people here are completely hysterical & over the top. I bet you think everyone who listened to Marilyn Manson worshipped the devil too. Get a grip!

OP posts:
SoyDora · 27/10/2019 11:49

I bet you think everyone who listened to Marilyn Manson worshipped the devil too.

No. And that is entirely different. These are real people, real families suffering. And you are treating it as entertainment. Get your own grip.

WorraLiberty · 27/10/2019 11:50

FFS I've just read homeworkery's post

You really do have some issues going on OP

Fraggling · 27/10/2019 11:51

If someone told me I looked like Chris watts that would be fine as I have zero idea who they are and am not googling thanks.

It would not be ok to tell a work colleague they looked like jeffrey dahmer or ian brady or ian huntley ffs. 100% not ok.

Agree ghoulish interest in real life murderers is grim.

butterybiscuitbasic · 27/10/2019 11:52

@Oldraver that’s oddly tickled me. Am imagining the poor woman going about her daily business and not realising why people are recoiling in horror when they meet her.

Butchyrestingface · 27/10/2019 11:52

Yes I write to serial killers & propose marriage & fangirl over them.

Well, plenty of people were sending sackloads of mail to CW last summer, OP. They had to come from somewhere. 🤷‍♀
