To think most the UK now wants to remain in the EU

Wales seems to be saying they'd rather be in the EU. Scotland voted remain, as did Northern Ireland, Liverpool, Manchester, London.

Polls recently have showed more for remain than leave now.

Most recent poll I can find suggests otherwise

'If Boris Johnson fails to get a Brexit deal with the EU by October 31st should he should..."

Request an extension of the UK’s membership of the EU: 43%
Leave the EU without a deal: 49%

via @Survation, 25 Sep'

And before that

"Brexit should be delayed for a further three months to 31 January 2020"

Agree: 29%
Disagree: 49%

via @ComRes

I haven't seen any polls giving remain a lead. If you have any do share.

lyingwanker · 04/10/2019 19:52

I think the only reason that a lot of people may now want to remain is because they're sick of it rumbling along. It just makes me wonder whether that's been the game plan all along though?

GoodJobSteve · 04/10/2019 19:56

Most 'averaged' polls seem to put the result 52% remain, 48% leave or thereabouts...hardly a resounding 'remain' result, and unlikely to 'heal' a divided nation.

The only resolution I can see that takes the heat out of the brexit debate is a 'Brexit in name only' soft Brexit (along the Norway line, with special treatment for NI). We can then spend the next 20 years or so drifting further away from the EU, or rejoin at some point, whatever the UK subsequently decides.

Never going to happen, unfortunately, with the crazies in charge of the process Sad

hippy1952 · 04/10/2019 19:57

It doesn't matter what people say they want now. This country is a democracy and the referendum result was to leave. Therefore we leave.

Imnotthrowingawaymyshot · 04/10/2019 19:58

Yes hippy.

This is what people don't grasp.
There is more at risk than brexit.
Everyone should be deeply concerned if we don't leave.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 04/10/2019 19:59

I hear there are rumblings of an indyref for Wales as well as Scotland. Maybe we should just boot England out of the UK.

It's very hard to get an accurate poll about brexit when we're in our echo chambers. Lots of polls are done by partisan websites that skew the figures.

Sleepyhead19 · 04/10/2019 20:00

Rubbish. There’s not a person I know who voted leave and has changed their mind. I do however know a couple of remainers who now want brexit, which did surprise me. I have not seen any polls to support that either.
If anyone does now want to stay, it’s more likely because they are sick to the back teeth of it going on so long and not being able to turn the tv, radio or leave he house without it being talked about.
I think you need to be wary of polls anyhow. Most media outlets are swayed one way and they will do their best to create the results they want their poll to say. Asking particular groups that they know will give the answer they want usually does the trick.

Whatsername7 · 04/10/2019 20:02

I know leavers who have changed their mind.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 04/10/2019 20:03

@hippy1952 um.. thats not how democracy works.

PierreBezukov · 04/10/2019 20:03

Everyone should be deeply concerned if we don't leave.

This.

GoodJobSteve · 04/10/2019 20:05

I know leavers who have changed their mind.

As do I. I don't know of any 'Remain' voters who have, although there are plenty who publicly accept the 'leave' vote (so I can see how there may be some confusion).

Quaffy · 04/10/2019 20:07

I expect that in fact the split is pretty even, and if there were a further referendum it would be close.

Cinammoncake · 04/10/2019 20:08

I know leavers who now want to remain but no remainers who now want to leave.

I think the only sensible way forward is a second referendum to find out what people want now that we know the facts, a confirmatory one. They should have arranged for this in the first place Sad

I don't know anyone who has changed their mind, either way. I do know a lot of 18-21 years olds who are now old enough to vote who want to stay in the EU ... or at least stay in the Single market and retain Freedom of Movement. That could be what is making a difference. It's hard to see any advantages of Brexit. If the only advantage is to avoid the wrath of far right types, I'm not sure we should pander to aggression and simultaneously push this country into economic turmoil for years. Shame Theresa didn't seek a true compromise back in 2016, when a Soft Brexit would have been palatable to both sides and we could have all moved on.

WaterSheep · 04/10/2019 20:10

I know leavers who now want to remain, but no remainers who now want to leave.

This has also been my experience.

Novocastrian · 04/10/2019 20:10

@hippy1952. So what the people want now isn't important? When you change electricity supplier, you have a few weeks cooling-off period where you can change your mind.

There's nothing undemocratic about calling off a referendum result if the public have changed their mind before the result has been enacted. In fact, it's actually undemocratic to go through with it if you know the public have changed their mind.

bakesalesally · 04/10/2019 20:11

I am very concerned that we might not leave.

And very concerned that we might.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/10/2019 20:12

No

I have always thought if there was a second referendum leave would win

Haven’t changed my opinion on that I think many are so fed up they just want the government to get on with it

Hold34 · 04/10/2019 20:13

I think people are just fed up of it and want to move on. And would accept remaining if it will achieve that.

Novocastrian · 04/10/2019 20:16

Remaining is the only way to get it over with and move on. Leaving would result in dealing with economic consequences and at least 5 years of trade deals.

Biker47 · 04/10/2019 20:16

I'm still happy with leave thanks. Even more so now given the recent news that the EU is in hurry to get things started with membership talks with North Macedonia and Albania to get them into the EU fold.

Pearlyxdrop · 04/10/2019 20:17

I’m a remainer who now wants to leave. I know a lot of other people in my social circle (24-29) who voted remain but would want to respect the result of the first vote.

When we had the 2016 vote, nobody said ‘this is just an advisory. We may not implement the result’. If they had done, there would’ve been outrage especially as it was expected that remain would win. All the politicians and parties said they’d carry out the result and that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

It makes me laugh when ardent remainers try to insist that the country has changed its mind! Of course you would say that.

Saddler · 04/10/2019 20:17

If anything amongst people I speak to more people now what to get out of this EU shit show

MintyMabel · 04/10/2019 20:17

Ignore the polls. They are not trustworthy. We learned that the first time round. I think remain would win a second referendum but have no hope of that happening. Best just hold on to our hats and get through the month.

MintyMabel · 04/10/2019 20:19

It makes me laugh when ardent remainers try to insist that the country has changed its mind! Of course you would say that

Makes me laugh when ardent brexiteers insist they are still in the majority and there shouldn’t be another referendum. Surely that’s the best way to shut everyone up?
