To think most the UK now wants to remain in the EU

Wales seems to be saying they'd rather be in the EU. Scotland voted remain, as did Northern Ireland, Liverpool, Manchester, London.

Polls recently have showed more for remain than leave now.

If we do remain (or 'leave' with free movement of travel for EU citizens) I believe the UK government will (finally!) avail themselves of the restrictions allowed to prevent non-economic migration (like the Germans do), so I don't think Macedonia or Albania's accession is something to worry about, personally.

Surenuff · 04/10/2019 20:22

I think it's almost certainly true but don't think a 2nd Ref is the way to resolve it. Better to do it via a general election so we can flush out this putrid government at the same time.

It doesn't matter what people say they want now. This country is a democracy and the referendum result was to leave. Therefore we leave
No matter how much they've learned, no matter if people have changed their minds democracy states we leave? What cobblers.

MIdgebabe · 04/10/2019 20:22

I know a lot of people who would rather remain but respect the vote - more for reasons of moving forward , than any belief that the vote was fair

but I just can't believe what a mess the politicians are making. Years of no progress on Brexit or any of the other problems of the country. Years of squabbling, years of self interest. Wasters the lot.

PollyIsobel · 04/10/2019 20:22

Makes me laugh when ardent brexiteers insist they are still in the majority and there shouldn’t be another referendum. Surely that’s the best way to shut everyone up?

should we have a second and third and fourth referendum every 3 years? Because people change their minds all the time.
If remain won a second referendum, you would be insistent that that result should be respected. Could leavers then not demand a third vote and make it a best of three? You know, because people change their minds!

Cinammoncake · 04/10/2019 20:22

If anything amongst people I speak to more people now what to get out of this EU shit show

It's the UK that's a shit show not the EU. I'd have thought that was plain for all to see. Compare say Leo Varadkar and Boris Johnson, for example.

Pearlyxdrop
I’m a remainer who now wants to leave.

I would love to be nosy and ask why you've changed your mind?

I know quite a few remainers who acknowledge the result and wish to respect it, but if given the choice they would rather remain.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 04/10/2019 20:22

Why should there be a second referendum it won’t shut anyone up

It’s incredibly naive to think the truth won’t be twisted again that both sides won’t step up the fear of what could happen

MIdgebabe · 04/10/2019 20:23

Third referendum. We voted to join in the first place.

itsabongthing · 04/10/2019 20:23

OP I think that (always have) but i think you are incorrect in your assertion.
Sadly I think there are lots of original leave voters that are frustrated it’s taking so long and think we should just do it.

Quaffy · 04/10/2019 20:24

pollyisobel

Yes, which is why making such massive decisions based on a bare majority referendum was always a ridiculously stupid idea.

jasjas1973 · 04/10/2019 20:24

I live in a heavily leave area, most 2016 vocal leavers now hardly ever talk about brexit, when they do, its "i don't care, i just want it to stop" of course a few hardcore leavers too but also a few who now want to remain and feel lied too.

I don't know how the UK gets out of this, its still approx 50/50, whatever happens next pee's off half the nation.

It was a complete failure of Govt to get us into this situation.

Cinammoncake · 04/10/2019 20:24

should we have a second and third and fourth referendum every 3 years? Because people change their minds all the time.

It's such a huge issue though. If there was a second ref and leave was the majority vote, knowing what we know now, then I would accept that more (as a remainer) than the current situation. If remain was the choice at least it'd be a more informed choice (hopefully) but I'd expect leave campaigners to continue to campaign for that.

I know a couple of previous remainers who now want to leave. It seems to swing both ways

chomalungma · 04/10/2019 20:26

Survation poll 25/9

www.survation.com/archive/2019-2/

Weighted 1013 individuals

Remain 51%
Leave 44%

But bizarrely

46% The UK should leave on 31st Oct
44% The UK should not leave on 31st Oct

If Johnson fails to get a deal then....

43% should get an extension
49% leave without a deal

/The margin of error is not given./

So apparently more people want to remain than leave but more people think we should leave than not leave......

user1480880826 · 04/10/2019 20:27

Most people seem to just want it over with. And for most that means finishing what we’ve started.

Cinammoncake · 04/10/2019 20:27

It’s incredibly naive to think the truth won’t be twisted again that both sides won’t step up the fear of what could happen

True. But what's the fear of what could happen if we stayed in the EU Confused I just don't get it. The pound would go back up, the mayhem would stop, and we could all get on with our lives. We could still leave the EU at a later date if it became intolerable to be in it Confused

TulipsInAJug · 04/10/2019 20:27

it's actually undemocratic to go through with it if you know the public have changed their mind.

But how do you know?? Have another referendum to find out? But what if it's close? What if people change their minds again? Should we keep on having referendums to see if people have changed their minds? Or until we get the 'correct' result?

That's not how democracy works.

Quaffy · 04/10/2019 20:29

The problem is leaving with no deal won’t actually get it over with. We will be in a state of limbo trying to negotiate everything for years to come.

Mydumboears · 04/10/2019 20:30

I'd expect leave campaigners to continue to campaign

But don’t you see that if we flip from leave to remain and then campaign to leave again and then remain again etc, this will never ever go away. However bad it is now, however divided we are, your suggestion will only make it worse. We were told that the referendum was our chance. We had our chance. I was disappointed to see it but remain did lose and that needs to be upheld otherwise we will never move forward.

chomalungma · 04/10/2019 20:30

ost people seem to just want it over with

Do they?

Or is that just what's been repeated so often that people believe it's true.

Based on my 'bubble', most people don't want it over if it's not good for the country.

But I am sure other people have their own experiences.

chomalungma · 04/10/2019 20:33

But how do you know

Put the deal that is proposed to the people?

Is this what people want to happen?

I wish someone would explain to me what problem they have with the proposed new arrangements being put to the people?

Surenuff · 04/10/2019 20:33

People who say they just want it 'done' and fall for that pathetic Tory slogan are heading for such a massive disappointment - if/when we leave it is only the start of a tortuous process of legislation and re-negotiation that will suck the time, energy and finance out of the country for years to come.

I just know that even when they get their wish, leavers will continue to whine about the 'failure' of government for the rest of their lives.

Quaffy · 04/10/2019 20:34

mydumb

I don’t believe the country will move forward if we leave with a hard Brexit. I believe it will lead to a very difficult period for our country and the level of hatred and division will escalate.

The same is also true i suppose if we don’t leave.

We are fucked and were fucked the moment David Cameron opened Pandora’s box by calling the referendum.

Novocastrian · 04/10/2019 20:35

@TulipsInAJug. So we do something as a country that can never be undone, even though polls suggest the public may have changed their minds?? That's insane.
