To think most the UK now wants to remain in the EU

Wales seems to be saying they'd rather be in the EU. Scotland voted remain, as did Northern Ireland, Liverpool, Manchester, London.

Polls recently have showed more for remain than leave now.

Also with regards to reform, it shows how unwieldy the EU is if it takes one member state potentially about to leave before reform is even mooted. The only noises I've heard are about closer integration as the solution to the problems of the union.

elprup · 04/10/2019 21:36

I thought far more constituencies voted Leave though?

Looks like you are correct...

“Professor Hanretty estimated that 64% of seats in Great Britain probably voted to leave, or around 403 constituencies. Including the known results for Northern Ireland, that amounts to 410 constituencies voting leave (63%) and 240 voting remain.”

It's not snog But we will have to disagree on this. Many remainers though think the BBC isn't holding the government to account properly or questioning them enough or really making the point enough about things like them breaking the law or the impact of no deal and so on.

I still want to leave, the EU is not the safe bet. Turkey is about to open the gates to Europe, Greece can’t cope with any more refugees but the rest the EU including Germany have completely changed there tune to everyone is Welcome, we can do this mantra.

BunchMunch · 04/10/2019 21:40

Thank you, elprup
I knew I'd seen it somewhere!

Cinammoncake · 04/10/2019 21:41

I think more people do want to remain and are sick of England arrogantly acting as if its the only country in the UK

Agreed. I live in England and am sick of this too. And all the bungs trying to get people to do what they want. So entitled. But if you actually break down England, then London wants to remain, Manchester, Liverpool, Cambridge, Brighton and others. Not to say some don't want to leave in those places, but it's not like England as a whole wants to leave either iyswim. London is in the same position as Scotland insofar as leaving is concerned.

Turkey is about to open the gates to Europe

What does this even mean? Turkey isn't in the EU, I thought we'd already established that this was a lie made up to 'win' the referendum

OP posts:
chomalungma · 04/10/2019 21:43

BBC coverage is heavily pro remain

Really? Some would say it's pro Leave, especially when they get regular vox pops from Stoke on Trent.

chomalungma · 04/10/2019 21:45

Greece can’t cope with any more refugees but the rest the EU including Germany have completely changed there tun

Refugees and who should take them in is surely a different matter to the freedom of movement within the EU?

elprup · 04/10/2019 21:46

Really? Some would say it's pro Leave

IME all Leavers think the BBC is pro-remain, and all Remainers think it’s pro-leave.

Idontwanttotalk · 04/10/2019 21:46

@Novocastrian

"Remaining is the only way to get it over with and move on."
Leaving is the only way to get it over with and move on. If we were to remain now after all that has gone in we would have no credibility whatsoever. We would be the laughing stock of Europe and nothing we said would be listened to.

chomalungma · 04/10/2019 21:46

IME all Leavers think the BBC is pro-remain, and all Remainers think it’s pro-leave

So it's probably doing something right....

chomalungma · 04/10/2019 21:47

We would be the laughing stock of Europe and nothing we said would be listened to

A bit like now?

elprup · 04/10/2019 21:47

We would be the laughing stock of Europe

I think we already are sadly

Cinammoncake · 04/10/2019 21:50

Not so, because if we left with no deal we would then have to begin negotiating with the EU. After royally pissing everybody off.

Saying we would be the laughing stock is one of the worse reasons possible to leave. Because we made one bad decision we have to follow it up with a worse one to save face? We'll look like right dicks if we leave with no deal because it's an utterly stupid thing to do. Yes if we revoke we'll look stupid, but for less time Grin

There's a map of the UK showing how people voted in the 2016 EU referendum in this article:

Snog · 04/10/2019 21:53

I can't see how we could function in the EU anymore as we'd have no credibility and half the MEPs would be Brexit party ones which surely makes our membership a joke.

chomalungma · 04/10/2019 21:56

There's a map of the UK showing how people voted in the 2016 EU referendum in this article

The thing about maps like that is that it doesn't show the cites in detail - for example London has 8 million people but it's as big on the map as some of the much less populated counties but they are far bigger in area

So it's a deceptive map.....

The fact is that it was 52 % compared to 48%...

And some very interesting regional differences.

Pretty much half our members were UKIP before...so not much difference really.

hopingformoremoremore · 04/10/2019 21:57

Why a second referendum ? There was a vote already, just accept it and bloody well get on with it.

Snog · 04/10/2019 21:58

That's my point, we have no proper representation in the EU

chomalungma · 04/10/2019 21:58

There was a vote already, just accept it and bloody well get on with it

So you would be happy with the withdrawal agreement that Theresa May brought back then?

Cinammoncake · 04/10/2019 22:00

I can't see how we could function in the EU anymore as we'd have no credibility and half the MEPs would be Brexit party ones which surely makes our membership a joke.

I think other countries have elected some right wing extremists too, it happens. We'd still have the same say in the EU that we've always had, quite a big say in fact.

The point about the 2016 maps and results is that it might have changed now. For example, farmers and farming communities may have changed their minds. I think we need to check this before doing something so massive.

A vote for what specifically, is I think the question

OP posts:
Sunshine1239 · 04/10/2019 22:05

Leave would defo win a second referendum

The polls show a slight a majority for remain but to be fair it’s only remain who are still campaigning! Leave won so most of us don’t feel the need to go on about it

If there was a new ref then they’ll be all sorts of protests about the establishment overturning the people and it’ll turn into a people vs parliament, north vs the rich south. Proper dirty tricks stuff and leave will win.

For the record I live in Liverpool and many many people now favour leave over remain

Also labour can’t be inc in any remain cite as Corbins a Brexiteer
