Am i being ridiculous and can anyone recommend either of these cars? I cant make a decision!

I would never ever buy Kia - very bad experience with the quality. Skoda has gone a very long way from being the joke they were 30 years ago. You know they belong to VW, they're just cheaper but the quality is very good.
I know people who have changed from one Skoda to another for the last 15 years or more, simply because they love the brand.

Orchardgreen · 25/09/2019 13:57

I bought a Skoda Karoq in May. It’s fabulous. You get a lot more for your money than the equivalent VW or Audi.

AlmostAlwyn · 25/09/2019 13:57

Skoda is not actually Skoda any more. They're all VW chassis with different looks. Have you had a test drive? Sat in each one? Which was more comfortable?

CocoLoco87 · 25/09/2019 13:58

Skoda's are fab. We have a kodiaq, although I had originally wanted a kia sorento. I wasn't sure about the Skoda badge but I did my research and it's a really safe, reliable car.

CMOTDibbler · 25/09/2019 13:58

We currently have a Skoda Superb and it is absoutely fantastic. Theres a reason that many taxi drivers have Skodas and its because they are so reliable

ThinkerThunkk · 25/09/2019 13:59

I used to have a Yugo, built like an east European tank! Best little car I ever had.

GinDaddy · 25/09/2019 14:00

Hi @bouncingbelle

Why do you keep thinking that you shouldn't go for a Skoda? Is this to do with the 1980s jokes about them, when they were considered an Eastern bloc unreliable heap etc?

Today's Skoda is light years away from that image, and funnily enough you'll have a slew of solidly middle class folk on here in a minute extolling the virtue of the brand and how it's the smart money choice - the cars are part of the Volkswagen Group and share platforms and technology, so you're getting a Tiguan for two thirds of the money, is one way of looking at it.

Kia has had the luxury of not having an image to get over, but I think they're very comparable in terms of price points, place in the market, etc. Kia does have the fantastic seven year warranty to recommend it, and the Sportage looks a lot better in its second generation than its first.

I can't recommend either personally (see my SUV thread for more, ha) but they're both solid well reviewed family cars.

The Skoda does get better ratings for its driveability and technology. If you can see past the badge (and thousands of people are now) then it's a very safe bet.

As an aside, I honestly think the Skoda Octavia is this decade's Volvo estate in terms of its image and prevalence amongst certain classes.

LiveatCityHall · 25/09/2019 14:00

I've had 3 skoda's in my life and I've loved them all. Essentially they are a vw chassis with a skoda badge. I've never had issues with any of the skoda's I've had but I understand that parts are not hugely expensive. They're comfortable, easy to drive and I don't think the stigma is as bad as it once was. Ultimately, it's down to your personal preferences. Take each of them out for a test drive and see. The skoda might come up with better reviews, but actually, the kia might be a better drive.

Teddybear45 · 25/09/2019 14:01

Skoda’s are VWs and probably better quality than a lot of them. It’s a really reliable car

666onmyhead · 25/09/2019 14:01

Nah, sorry good try everyone, but it's still a Skoda!

Hellohah · 25/09/2019 14:01

We have the Skoda Karoq at work. It's a pool car - driven by 80+ staff.
EVERYONE loves it. It's the first car we've had that everyone wants to drive.

ineedaholidaynow · 25/09/2019 14:02

Skodas aren't like they used to be. Definitely don't write it off before looking at it

familycourtq · 25/09/2019 14:02

Am i being ridiculous

Yes - as PP says Skoda is just VW group. SEAT, Audi, VW and Skoda use literally the same parts in 99% of the cars. Would you feel better if you knew it shares a huge amount with VW Tiguan, SEAT Ateca and Audi Q3?

A lot of the parts on my Audi A3 were identical to VW and Skoda ones.

CuteOrangeElephant · 25/09/2019 14:03

We have a Skoda Fabia Estate and have had 0 problems with it.

Bobojangles · 25/09/2019 14:03

We've got a Skoda Octavia and a Kia picanto. The Skoda is fine, does the job as others have said they are really just VWs they don't have a bad rep anymore but....

We bloody love our little Kia, never had a thing wrong with it and would recommend the make to anyone (unfortunately they just didn't have a model the the Octavia's vast boot size)

PotteringAlong · 25/09/2019 14:03

Buy the Skoda!

familycourtq · 25/09/2019 14:03

Nah, sorry good try everyone, but it's still a Skoda!

Ignorant nonsense, but keep on with the ill-informed snobbery, you're the one paying over the odds for extra marketing.

ginghambox · 25/09/2019 14:04

The Karoq is basically VW Tiguan or a Seat Ateca with a different body.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 25/09/2019 14:05

@666onmyhead You're going to need to tell us what you believe to be wrong with a Skoda?

inwood · 25/09/2019 14:05

A skoda is basically a cheaper VW. And it's not even that cheap. do it,

randomsabreuse · 25/09/2019 14:06

I'd put Kia as having a "worse" reputation than Skoda - reasonably priced car - not really bothered type vibe!

LittleAndOften · 25/09/2019 14:09

I've had my kia ceed for 10 years and it's never broken down once. All kias come with a 7 year warranty but I never needed to use it. Honestly it's the best car I've ever had and I recommend them to everyone. Kias are built in Europe and are designed by former vw engineers, they are excellent value too.

As for skodas, I've never had one but the name wouldn't put me off. They've had a good quality reputation for many years.

Whatever you do, avoid Peugeot. Nothing but trouble!!

BikeRunSki · 25/09/2019 14:12

I’ve had 2 Fabias, DH has had 2 Octavias. They have all been excellent cars.

At work, we mostly get Skoda and Kias as Fleet cars. The Kias give us a lot more aggro than the Skodas.

You’re being daft.

abigailsnan · 25/09/2019 14:12

Skoda best car on the road at the minute unless you can afford a Bentley.

DontCallMeShitley · 25/09/2019 14:13

We had a Skoda Fabia, good car, would get another one if we weren't stuck with a revolting Phev which is not as economic as it is made out to be and is very poorly designed, horrid thing. Give me a Skoda any day.
