Help! Getting a new car and am stuck between a kia sportage & a skoda karoq. The skoda seems to come out better in reviews but i've never had a brand new car before and keep thinking i shouldnt go for a skoda....
Am i being ridiculous and can anyone recommend either of these cars? I cant make a decision!

I have a Skoda Kodiaq (sp?) and it’s really great, I’m very happy with it. I would definitely choose Skoda over Kia these days.

Babybel90 · 25/09/2019 20:05

I’m with you OP, I know a Skoda is just a VW with a different badge, I know it’s a good value car for the money, I know they’re not the rubbish Eastern European paper mache cars from the 1980s, I know I can’t afford a brand new car from VW or Audi or Mercedes new BUT I just cannot bring myself to drive a Skoda. Maybe I’m Hyacinth Bucket reincarnated?

SleepyKat · 25/09/2019 20:08

Oh and when I test drove a Kia though the tech/spec was good, the seat was like sitting on a board, the road noise was worse than I’m used to and the trim felt a bit cheap. So while the reliability may have a good reputation I did think it felt cheaper than a Skoda.

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/09/2019 20:09

DP automotive engineer says all VW group engines have an intrinsic problem that means head gasket more likely to go than other cars. His choices currently are:

Kia/ Hyundai - good value, reliable drive
BMW - high end very reliable
Vauxhall - if you like to tinker with your cat ( he does).

SleepyKat · 25/09/2019 20:10

I thought bmw came bottom in most reliability tables these days?

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 25/09/2019 20:12

Agree with what everyone said about Skoda being same as VW/ Audi. I’ve had Audi’s/ BMW/merc. Got pregnant with #3 so needed a bigger car. Wanted a Kodiaq. Test drove it. Loved it. Took car seats in and wouldn’t fit 3 so I got a Kia Sorento. DO NOT LOVE MY KIA AT ALL. It’s like a tank! And nothing like driving all those lovely German cars I’ve had for years. The worst thing is that actually if I’d have thought properly about this I’d have realised that my eldest doesn’t need a car seat anymore and my middle one won’t very soon - so I should have got the Skoda! Buy the Skoda! Every time I see a Kodiaq I have a tinge of sadness!!!😂😂😂 A first world problem I appreciate.....

Fink · 25/09/2019 20:17

My Skoda Fabia was hands down the best car I've ever owned. My Kia Ce'ed comes joint last, it was awful: rubbish, plasticy, tacky interior finish, mechanically unreliable, terrible fuel consumption.

If I had the choice, I would buy a Skoda every time. I loved it. I've since had Fords, Suzuki, and Renault. None could come close to my lovely Skoda.

MaryBoBary · 25/09/2019 20:19

YABU.

At least it's not a fucking Honda Jazz.

BestIsWest · 25/09/2019 20:20

We have an Octavia and a Fabia. They are great. Reliable, solid and both are great to drive.

Moondancer73 · 25/09/2019 20:22

You'd buy a Kia over a Skoda? Skoda have been around years, the Octavia actually won car of the year a few years back where as Kia is a relative newcomer.
I've had two skoda's and they are great cars. I think before you jump to massively wrong conclusions you should do a bit of reading.

Blueoasis · 25/09/2019 20:23

That just depends on the age of the car. Pre 2010 you're fine. I think it's 2010-2014/15 maybe the are the dodgy ones. They may have fixed it in the newer ones but not sure. Mine is 11 years old and still going strong.

contentedsoul · 25/09/2019 20:25

Dear god OP, are you really that shallow?
Think you're too posh for a skoda - get over yourself!!

Sallyseagull · 25/09/2019 20:26

I know I'm a snob but I just couldnt buy a skoda.

(Btw - I don't mean to offend anyone with one, it's my issue not yours 🤣).

Igmum · 25/09/2019 20:26

I have a Skoda Fabia. My first ever car from new, bought 15 years ago and still going strong 110,000 miles later. Would definitely recommend

BelindasGleeTeam · 25/09/2019 20:30

I have a Karoq.

It's the first car I will go back and get a new one of when my lease is up.

It's fantastic. Solid, great to drive, handles well, comfy, all the extras I want on a decent spec model and safe.

And all for £7k cheaper than the basic equivalent VW.

Winner.

enjoyingscience · 25/09/2019 20:31

I love our skoda. It’s done just over 150k miles, and I’ve had to do hardly anything to it.

I don’t think Kia is trendier than Skoda, is it? I’d think they were about the same. I think car snobbery is a bit weird though!

LighteningRidge · 25/09/2019 20:31

Love my Skoda. Will definitely get another one when this one needs upgrading but it's TDI engine is going strong. Fully expect to double my 125k miles in it before it needs to go to car heaven.

DontLikeMyCurtains · 25/09/2019 20:32

YABVVU. We've just bought a Skoda Karoq. It's bloody fantastic. You'll regret not buying one.

mrsfeatherbottom · 25/09/2019 20:37

We have a Karoq and love it!

woodchuck99 · 25/09/2019 20:42

I doubt anyone is offended. Most skoda owners love the fact that mindless snobs like you exist as it keeps the price down.

Wobblywibblywoo · 25/09/2019 20:48

Only have a Skoda if it’s a vrs Grin

MatchaMuffin · 25/09/2019 20:52

I can understand someone choosing not to buy a car because they don't like the brand, but I can't understand anyone picking a Kia over a Skoda for that reason! I'd rather be seen driving a Skoda any day. Not that I am bothered about these things really.

Bouncingbelle · 25/09/2019 20:57

Thank you all! I'm now Team Skoda & awaiting delivery!!!

@Blueoasis he says all VWs since 2010 up to and including the current ones have the problem. Wouldn't let my parents buy one.

Babysharkisanearworm · 25/09/2019 21:16

Love a Skoda
