Help! Getting a new car and am stuck between a kia sportage & a skoda karoq. The skoda seems to come out better in reviews but i've never had a brand new car before and keep thinking i shouldnt go for a skoda....
Am i being ridiculous and can anyone recommend either of these cars? I cant make a decision!

My friend has an Octavia VRS. Very nice and snazzy!

allthepeoplethatcomearound · 25/09/2019 17:46

Oooh I love a Skoda - I had a fantastic little Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo not too long ago and it was the best thing since sliced bread!

cluecu · 25/09/2019 17:50

I learnt to drive in a Skoda, it was fabulous and I really want one for myself. My very experienced instructor said it was one of the best cars he'd had too. I can't remember if it was a Fabia or Octavia but it's too pricey for me to justify as I don't need a car for every day.

ok365 · 25/09/2019 18:03

I can only offer you our story. We have had Skodas for the past eight years and never had problem. Until when we bought our last new Karoq 1.5 Tsi petrol manual. It had two faults one the was kangarooing when cold in first gear and the second gear had very deadly flat spot. The kangarooing is now well over the internet. The trouble was the dealer refused our rejection because Skoda UK called it characteristic. We didn't want another Skoda so ended up trading it in and losing nearly three grand. We'll never ever buy another Skoda or go back to that dealer. Check out the forum Briskoda please.

ALongHardWinter · 25/09/2019 18:20

Nothing wrong with Skodas! My son-in-law won't buy anything else now. He had a Skoda Superb for years, then 2 years ago,he bought a Skoda Rapid. He's never had any major problems with either of them, and says that you get 'a lot of car for your money'.

familycourtq · 25/09/2019 18:23

That same 1.5 Tsi petrol manual engine has had issues in VWs, SEATs and Audis too (not surprising as it's the same engine), but not unique to Skoda.

YABU to buy a new car, we got a 3 yo Skoda for a third of the price

littleniki · 25/09/2019 18:28

Highly recommend Skoda. As a family of 4 drivers we’ve had 10 of these between us since 1990s. Both my parents and sister still have them (I went to Nissan as needed a 4x4 and Skoda didn’t do them at the time in my price range). Never had any that have died. Would love to have a karoq

BroomstickOfLove · 25/09/2019 18:33

Skodas are great. My mum (lives in a tiny cottage in the middle of a forest) and my FiL (retired home counties type) each have one, and both swear by them, whether it's for long commutes or carrying a bootful of firewood.

ruralcat · 25/09/2019 18:50

Whatever you chose I wouldn't do brand new, lose money the second you drive away. Nearly new is the best way to go.

HeresMe · 25/09/2019 18:57

I used to work in car trade both are decent cars, as said Skoda are owned by VW, and Kia is owned by Hyundai, it's just Kia is the budget brand.

Eithier are good cars to go for.

woodchuck99 · 25/09/2019 19:00

Skodas are great cars but feel free to stay ignorant as it keeps the price down for the rest of us. I think it is brilliant that there are suckers out there that won't buy them because of the name.

Sexnotgender · 25/09/2019 19:05

I’ve got a Fabia Estate. It’s GREAT.

I’d buy another Skoda in a heartbeat.

woodchuck99 · 25/09/2019 19:06

Whatever you chose I wouldn't do brand new, lose money the second you drive away. Nearly new is the best way to go.

I disagree. I have found that if I buy a car new and look after it nothing goes wrong for at least 10 years. Nearly new cars are often ex fleet or hire cars and haven't necessary been looked after or driven well.

Heyboyo · 25/09/2019 19:16

Horrible cars. Like sitting inside a tin can

BarbaraofSeville · 25/09/2019 19:17

Loving all the Skoda love. I've had at least five (company car driver).

A lot of my colleagues laughed at my first one (a black Octaves) until they realised I had one of the smartest looking cars in the car park. I've also had a couple of VRSs, which are amazing to drive.

Now there are quite a few Skodas in the car park. I was once sat in the black octavia in a car park and I became aware of two men poking around behind my car. Slightly worried I was about be robbed, I locked the doors and prepared to move on, when I heard one of them exclaim 'its a Skoda but it's really nice'. Grin.

MaidofKent78 · 25/09/2019 19:26

Love my Skoda Octavia estate. We considered this or the Volvo V70 but the Skoda was better and cheaper.

I'm quite happy for them to remain unfashionable if it keeps the price down!

Toddlerteaplease · 25/09/2019 19:26

We had Skoda's in the 80's. Despite the jokes they were brilliant cars. Really reliable and my dad liked driving them. They've recently bought their first non Skoda car. (A Vauxhall viva) as my mum thought it was cute. My dad does t like it!

banskuwansku · 25/09/2019 19:33

We just bought a Skoda Octavia estate on Sunday. It is really spacious. We have been planning to buy a new car for two years and driven different cars when renting abroad. We found Skoda the best. For us the space was important because dh is tall and we expect ds to grow tall too.

WTFdidwedo · 25/09/2019 19:38

I've always had Skodas since passing my test, I fucking love them. I've never understood the dislike of them.

Socksey · 25/09/2019 19:39

I have an Octavia.... love it.... would never have considered one but test drove it and fell in love.... felt like a brightened up version of my old Merc... on my 3rd one now and wouldn't go back

AnotherEmma · 25/09/2019 19:49

YABU

Why don't you compare the two cars for the following:
Fuel economy
Emissions
Cabin space
Boot space
Exterior dimensions (for ease of parking)
Price

I would be willing to bet that the Skoda is more economical, more practical and better value for money.

I'm biased as I've just bought a Skoda (a 2018 Octavia) and after all my car research I've concluded that Skodas are great Grin

I can't help but wonder... does it have to be brand new - why not nearly new - and does it really have to be an SUV?

Herocomplex · 25/09/2019 19:52

Also had three, loved them all. Thoroughly recommend.

Traveller104 · 25/09/2019 19:57

I have a Skoda Fabia. Before buying it had the same reservations r.e. Image etc, but was driven by my budget. Am so pleased I bought it, best car, so reliable, more ‘bits’ for the money than a comparable car and the Skoda after service is first rate... much better than the service my partner gets from BMW!

SleepyKat · 25/09/2019 20:03

Well I’ve had a Skoda before and it was a good car....not great but fine. They certainly have a good reputation now.

Kia are meant to be very reliable. I’ve just bought a car and was looking for a Kia c’eed as all reviews very positive, good price and high spec such as reversing cameras compared to others. In the end I couldn’t find a level 3 c’eed locally, only level 2. So started looking at Skoda Octavia but a Kia would have been my first choice. Ended up getting an Astra!

As someone said to me - Kias have a 7 year warranty for a reason.
