Help! Getting a new car and am stuck between a kia sportage & a skoda karoq. The skoda seems to come out better in reviews but i've never had a brand new car before and keep thinking i shouldnt go for a skoda....
Am i being ridiculous and can anyone recommend either of these cars? I cant make a decision!

YABU.

Both Skoda and Kia are amazing vehicles - Skoda in particular is basically a VW with a different badge. As a PP said, they have come a long way since being a big joke 30 years ago!

familycourtq · 25/09/2019 14:15

What are the buying criteria? If you want a bling car that's relatively unreliable, BMW, Audi, Jag and Land Rover. If you want a reliable car - Skodas rate quite well - the graph is number of problems experienced by owners on a sample size of 11k -

To not buy a skoda just cos its a skoda...
GinDaddy · 25/09/2019 14:16

@666onmyhead this is just trolling...

Brand snobbery is the enemy of the car buyer. As lots of previous posters have said, Skoda have had a great reputation for reliability.

The only reason really to buy a VW or Audi over a Skoda, is the better interiors, the luxury options, the higher capacity engines, the styling.

All valid reasons, but what I'm saying is that Skoda is right up there alongside them, and actually exceeds them in places when it comes to space and value (Octavia boot way bigger than Golf etc).

GenderfreeJoe · 25/09/2019 14:16

I've got a Skoda Octavia. Good value for money and a great car.

bigshiplittleboat · 25/09/2019 14:17

We have a fabia and a yeti and will stick to skodas for the foreseeable - somebody drove into the back of me at 90mph a couple of years ago, his merc was wrecked and my fabia looked mostly fine afterwards (although written off as chassis was bent unfortunately). I feel very safe in my skodas and the space inside them is also brilliant - much more spacious than equivalent VWs or Audis - we have to transport large pieces of equipment for work and this has also been a big selling point for us

IAmALazyArse · 25/09/2019 14:19

I don't know why people joke about Skoda being unreliable.
My friend still has fully functioning Skoda 120 (1987)😂

Ohthatsfabulousdarling · 25/09/2019 14:19

Haha. I felt the same about a year ago, then we test dro e a kodiaq. Amazing. Sales guy said the karoq was very much the same car. I'd go for it. They're giving the slightly more luxurious cars a run for their money in terms of quality.

PeachesAndMayo · 25/09/2019 14:21

Skoda's are fab. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one. On the other hand have a Kia Soul at the moment and loving it,.

PooWillyBumBum · 25/09/2019 14:23

I had a VW Tiguan (same platform as Karoq?) until recently. Fab, fab car.

I now have a Kia - the brand had been recommended to me many times and it frequently comes up as one of the most reliable brands in rankings - and also very happy with it. It’s less “luxurious” but then also cost a lot less!

peachgreen · 25/09/2019 14:23

We have a Skoda Yeti and it's absolutely fantastic.

tiredvommachine · 25/09/2019 14:28

Best police car I ever drove was a Skoda, stuck to the road like glue.

WildRosie · 25/09/2019 14:40

I was just coming on here to say that several police forces use Skodas. Must be a good endorsement.

Patroclus · 25/09/2019 14:42

Skoda made the best tanks and gear during the war, thats as far as my knowledge goes.

Patroclus · 25/09/2019 14:43

How did you get a Yugo, Thinker? thats my dream

KatharinaRosalie · 25/09/2019 14:45

Definitely don't buy the Skoda, I love the cheaper prices due to brand snobbery Grin

DHs Skoda is better than my top of the range Merc, and I'll get a Skoda myself next time.

maggiecate · 25/09/2019 14:54

Owned both Skoda and Kia and the Skoda is better by a mile - really good to drive, excellent build quality. Some of the smaller engine parts are branded Audi - they’re the same stable. Loads of taxi drivers have them, because they are cracking cars. They are a world away from what they were during the Communist era (had a good reputation before then).

The Kia I had was OK but a dull drive - bought it because of the long warranty but I wouldn’t again, I didn’t especially enjoy being in it.

Curious2468 · 25/09/2019 14:55

We’ve had Skoda for nearly 20 years. We’ve had Fabia, roomster and currently have a yeti. All excellent cars and very reliable. We love the cabin space in ours

Curious2468 · 25/09/2019 14:55

Also newer Skodas come with longer warranty now, I think it might be 5 years

Mildura · 25/09/2019 15:02

Just to be the 17th poster to say this, today's Skoda's are essentially VW/Audi with a different badge on the front.

Had had a Skoda Octavia for about 6 months and v happy. (The vRS, one, which has the same engine as a Golf GTi!!)

Bighairyspiderz · 25/09/2019 15:04

I once worked with a woman who refused to get into a taxi we'd booked because it was a Skoda. She was worried someone she knew would see her in it Hmm

BoomBoomsCousin · 25/09/2019 15:10

I’m in my 50s and when I grew up Skoda were the joke car. But when we were in the market for a new car 8 years ago we ended up with a Skoda. We wouldn’t have considered them either but we’d ended up with several Skoda rental cars and they always drove really nicely.

It was a very good car for the years we had it - drove nicely, nothing went wrong with it, good price, features were well thought out. We moved abroad and had to sell. We have no regrets about choosing a Skoda at all, now have an Audi which I hate!

HoldMyLobster · 25/09/2019 15:17

I test drove a Kia Sportage a while ago and it was kind of tinny.

I'd buy the Skoda.

Bouncingbelle · 25/09/2019 15:24

Thank you all, this was what i needed to hear! Yes, my opinion was being clouded by the fact that 30 years ago we used to laugh at skodas. Going back to try it again this afternoon without the "its perfect but its a skoda" opinion!

ForalltheSaints · 25/09/2019 15:25

The Berlin Wall came down 30 years ago next month. Skodas are not the cars of the 1970s and not social death that they were.

If you feel you really need a car, buy the Skoda.

RedSheep73 · 25/09/2019 15:26

Skoda is miles better than it used to be and is essentially a Volkswagen underneath - Kia is a much worse brand I'm afraid. It's only the extended warranty period that sells it, I reckon.
