Help! Getting a new car and am stuck between a kia sportage & a skoda karoq. The skoda seems to come out better in reviews but i've never had a brand new car before and keep thinking i shouldnt go for a skoda....
Am i being ridiculous and can anyone recommend either of these cars? I cant make a decision!

Had a brand new Skoda and a second hand one, both best cars I've ever had. All of my family have some incarnation of a Skoda, jokes on you if you choose a Kia over the Skoda!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 25/09/2019 15:27

I have a Karoq. DH has a Golf. The dash is the same, the screens are the same, virtually all of it is the same, except my Karoq is much more comfortable, roomier, has more bells and whistles and is cheaper.

A neighbour was very rude about it, but that’s snobbery and it’s way better than his stupidly expensive car. People who’ve ridden in mine have ordered one themselves.

I usually go for different manufacturers when I change. I’ll probably go for another Karoq this time.

I have a Kia Picanto and we had a Ceed previously. I love my Kia to bits. Dh has a Skoda Octavia. As many many others have said, it's basically a VW (my dad has a VW and all the electronics, Sat Nav etc are exactly the same). Dh really likes it and prefers it to our previous Kia (he's especially fond of the Sports mode button!) It is easy and pretty nippy to drive, has an enormous boot and so far totally reliable. Skoda aren't what they were, don't not buy it because of their old image.

SallyWD · 25/09/2019 15:29

Skodas are excellent. We've had ours for 7 years and never had any problems at all. My friend teases me about having a soda but I just tell her she's stuck in the 80s. Most people I know realise Skodas are great cars. Our street (populated by professors and doctors) is full of Skodas!

bloodywhitecat · 25/09/2019 15:32

My Skoda Fabia was one of the best cars I have ever owned. It endured both my kids learning to drive in it (and believe me, DS was not easy on her) and had close to 200,000 miles on the clock before she got traded in. She never, ever let us down despite DS managing to off road her into a field after passing his test I would buy another in a heartbeat.

TreacherousPissFlap · 25/09/2019 15:34

I love the fact you're debating buying a Skoda because it's a Skoda, yet would buy a Kia instead Grin

Seriously though, we have a Skoda, a few years old Octavia. We got it after a run of much sexier cars and were determined to hate it on principle I'm aghast to tell you that it is the most economic, reliable car I've ever owned. It's probably fair to say I don't love it, but we're looking at downsyand Skoda's are now very firmly on our list.

Thurmanmurman · 25/09/2019 15:37

I believe Skodas are excellent cars now but the name is really offputting for anyone over a certain age. My DH point blank refused to even look at one as an option and even though he knows he’s being ridiculous he can’t get past the name. Ask anyone under 30 and they would say they are good cars ( not cool but good)

HerculePoirotsGreyCells · 25/09/2019 15:40

Skodas are lovely cars. We've had several now as we change every few years but always get another Skoda Grin (Mine has the most comfiest driving seat Ive ever sat in. I'm quite short and find some cars just don't cater for smaller drivers!)

sundaylast · 25/09/2019 15:44

My dad has done over 1 million miles and got a Skoda superb and he swears it's the best car he has ever driven! He recently changed to a Peugeot 5008 which is a beautiful suv but he's really missing the skoda. My husband got a skoda last year just a base model as it's a second car and now I drive it and he takes my Nissan which is a higher model because I find the skoda much nicer to drive. Really don't think you can go wrong with one there's a reason they win car of the year quite a lot now. 3 of my friends have Kia's and 2 of them traded in early cause they hated them.

lakeswimmer · 25/09/2019 15:47

We've got a Skoda Octavia (our 3rd) and it's great. It would never occur to me to not buy something that was otherwise good value because of the branding. But then I don't much care what people think of me and someone who judges me by the car I drive isn't worth bothering with anyway.

DH's dream car, when we win the lottery, is a newer Skoda Octavia Grin

SisterSistine · 25/09/2019 15:57

If you can't get past the Skoda name, why not look at the SEAT equivalent? They are all the same. I think SEATs are a bit cheaper though because everyone knows Skodas are VWs so buy them.

OtraCosaMariposa · 25/09/2019 15:59

Skoda has been VW group for at least 25 years. Kia has much more of a "cheap and cheerful" image, imho.

BananaBooBoo · 25/09/2019 16:02

On my third skoda, wouldn't even look at another brand.

Blobby10 · 25/09/2019 16:05

I had a Skoda Fabia as a courtesy car whilst they fixed my Golf GTE. Once I got over the lack of power (compared to my Golf!) it was a decent car. Can't pretend that I would choose one over the VW but if it was that or nothing then I wouldn't be too disappointed Grin

Crimebustersofthesea · 25/09/2019 16:38

I hired a car a few years ago and got a fabia. Best car I've ever driven, I loved it. Would have bought one as our next car but the boot wasn't big enough for the dog!

Rosere · 25/09/2019 16:44

Love the sportage. They get good reviews, and look great. Am a skoda driver though. Absolutely love it. Hoping to get years out of it, but I'll likely go another Skoda or a Hyundai next.

randomchap · 25/09/2019 16:51

I have driven Skodas for 20 years. They are well built are rarely break down. The one time I went for another brand it caused no end of troubles.

IncrediblySadToo · 25/09/2019 17:11

I couldn’t do it.

I bought a new car last year and just couldn’t get past my ingrained ‘SKODA’ 🤣🤣🤣feelings.

...some things just run too deep!!

But to be fair everyone who has one seems to rate them!

AgeLikeWine · 25/09/2019 17:21

Modern Skodas are excellent cars. Skoda is a VW group brand, as is Audi, which uses many of the same engines, gearboxes and platforms. A million European taxi drivers use them for a reason.

”Nah, sorry good try everyone, but it's still a Skoda!” This is ignorant nonsense from a person who evidently knows nothing whatsoever about cars.

MsFrosty · 25/09/2019 17:26

They're the sa.e cargroup but skoda are brilliant. I've had 2 Octavia's and changing my current Passat for another octavia

FunkySnidge · 25/09/2019 17:29

I have test driven both, the kia probably has the edge but then you pay for it.
And the kodiac is just fab anyway.
Choose the cheaper one and if money is no object donate the difference to charity

Coffeeisnecessary · 25/09/2019 17:30

I love my skoda, I've had an octavia and a yeti, both brilliant. Also had a kia ceed which was OK but the skodas were definitely nicer!

TheresAFuckOverThere · 25/09/2019 17:31

Skoda karoq
What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2019
Winner!

Best family SUV for £18,000-£30,000

SudowoodoVoodoo · 25/09/2019 17:42

We had one of the larger Skodas for a number of years and nothing went awry apart from routine maintainence.

My only gripe is that it is not designed to be driven by a short woman with muscular legs and small feet. I have this problem with the VW too. It's a very cramped driving position that puts a lot of strain on my calves or quads as the pivot of the accelerator is so tight. Quite a major gripe that would stop me owning it as my own car, and means I rarely drive DH's. Saying that it was hard to find a big car suitable for a short driver.

reginafelangee · 25/09/2019 17:44

I get a new Skoda every 3 years. Currently on my 7th. Never had a breakdown or a problem.

Badge snobs are great cause they help keep the price of slkodas down and save me money. Smile
