Help! Getting a new car and am stuck between a kia sportage & a skoda karoq. The skoda seems to come out better in reviews but i've never had a brand new car before and keep thinking i shouldnt go for a skoda....
Am i being ridiculous and can anyone recommend either of these cars? I cant make a decision!

Skoda are excellent cars. I wouldn’t personally purchase a Kia

Blueoasis · 25/09/2019 21:20

@Lonecatwithkitten that sucks thought they'd have fixed it by now. Keeping my old one for longer then. Grin

CherryPavlova · 25/09/2019 21:25

I have a two year old Skoda Octavia Estate. I was reluctant as had driven a Golf plus up until then. I decided the dog was going to trash it anyway so settled on the Skoda and saved a considerable amount.
It handles like a Golf, has been as reliable as a Golf and is as comfortable as a Golf. I will buy another next year but might go for the 4x4 as we live rurally.

Redwinestillfine · 25/09/2019 21:29

Aren't Skoda's one of the best cars around? It's not the 1980's anymore!

NicolaStart · 25/09/2019 21:39

You haven’t really done your research at all, have you, OP?

Skodas have been winning tons of awards for years.

The Yeti is a classic. Shame, though, that Skoda have bowed to the same old same old trend for bulbous SUVs.

Saddler · 25/09/2019 21:40

Agreed, wouldn't buy one myself

Kgman · 26/09/2019 03:29

Why don't you test drive them both and make.a decision. Kia will have the longer warranty

1forAll74 · 26/09/2019 03:48

I have a Skoda Fabia, it's not new obviously, but it's in great shape.very low mileage, and suits me fine. The old image of Skoda's is long dead now.

Many years ago, I had an old type Skoda,, and it was tinny and rubbishy, and people used to liken them to a skip if they had a sun roof, which mine did. I had a bright reddish orange one and although it was shiny and newish it was crap. It ended it's days, being towed away from my house, as it kind of blew up ha ha.

Finding it hilarious that none of the 10 posters since yesterday eve have bothered to read the OP's update and have just gone straight in with their opinion on the first post.

Welcome to team Skoda OP! You won't regret it.

Ponchie · 26/09/2019 04:31

We're on our second Skoda Octavia vrs now And for the first time I actually enjoy driving (although the fuel economy is terrible). We previously had a jaguar and had so many problems with it that we couldn't wait to get rid of it and get another Skoda.

KUGA · 26/09/2019 09:05

Skoda all day long.
They have a fantastic reputation.

Orchardgreen · 26/09/2019 10:45

I bought my Skoda Karoq partly because of the clever rear seats that fold forwards, so that when my lovely Labrador struggles to get in the boot, he can just go in by the passenger door straight onto the floor pan level. 😎

Moondancer73 · 26/09/2019 10:59

@666onmyhead well aren't you just an arse then!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 26/09/2019 11:23

Glad you've made your correct decision, OP. I've never actually owned a Skoda, but they will be right up there for consideration, along with other VW-group cars, when we need a replacement.

I'm not convinced they were actually all that bad back when people routinely used to make jokes about Skodas and Ladas. They were very basic cars, but solidly built. Loads of cars of that era were very unrefined compared with modern ones - look at Austin, for a start.

Now, though, you'd be a fool to discount them for no other reason than the name on the badge. It would be like refusing to be operated on by a skilled, experienced and highly-qualified 50yo surgeon on the grounds that, 40 years ago, she would have been useless at it.

familycourtq · 26/09/2019 11:32

DP automotive engineer says all VW group engines have an intrinsic problem that means head gasket more likely to go than other cars.
That's ridiculous or has been misrepresented. There's a massive range of different engines with different sizes shapes and specs of head gaskets. Total twaddle.

janj2301 · 26/09/2019 11:39

We had a Skoda Superb for 6 weeks whilst my husband's mobility Ford Galaxy had a major repair. It was fab. When his car comes up for renewal we will definitely be looking at a Skoda.

BikeRunSki · 26/09/2019 11:49

I’ve been driving VW group card since I got my first Skoda in 1998, never had a head gasket problem, including on the 15 year old Polo that had done 240K miles.

notacooldad · 26/09/2019 11:52

Some people will always live in the past!

Rainyrain · 26/09/2019 11:57

We have a Kia. Bought from new, we were wooed by the seven year warranty. We’ve now had it for 4 years and it goes wrong ALL THE TIME. And very few things have actually been covered by the warranty so that was worth it Angry .
Go for the Skoda, I have no experience with a Skoda but it cannot be worse than a Kia.

starsinyourpies · 26/09/2019 12:03

Am on my second Skoda, both fantastic.

Whattodoabout · 26/09/2019 12:06

I wouldn’t buy either tbh, neither are very reliable makes.

MadMum2015 · 26/09/2019 12:06

When my 1 series came to the end of its PCP I test drove the Karoq last year and tbh, it wasn't for me - not enough of a driver's car (same with most SUVs I suspect). However I left the showroom having bought an Octavia VRS. It's fantastic. Husband has an A4 and this is the same car. Just £15K cheaper. Very pleased with it.

Mildura · 26/09/2019 12:16

The company well known for analysing reliability seem to disagree with you, as both Skoda and Kia make the top 5.

floppybit · 26/09/2019 12:20

Skodas are brilliant, I had one and it was so comfortable and reliable, it's basically a VW. I have a company car now but if I had to buy a new car again it would be a skoda

notacooldad · 26/09/2019 12:27

Could you link your evidence about this please?
