Am I missing something? Its the EU that don't want to do a deal, not the UK so why all the flack to Boris?

Am I naïve? Am I interpreting this right? I'm so sick and tired of the whole thing, but isn't it the EU that are playing silly buggers in their petulance? Boris is trying to do a deal.

Yet everyone is blasting HIM.

BTW I voted remain but accepted the result and just want it all over and done with, plus the attitude of Brussels and remOANERS,- not Remainers who accept result -has been abysmal .

I am not a fan of Boris BTW but he seems to know what to do. Or have I had my head stuck in the sand for the last 3 years?

Please be gentle, no bun fights, a sensible discussion please,

If you voted remain, surely you can see that it’s the UK which is being unrealistic in its expectations?

Independentcandidate · 16/09/2019 17:28

Er, there is a deal it's called the Withdrawal Agreement. It's been rejected 3 times by US!!

BarbariansMum · 16/09/2019 17:28

I dont see the point in any discussion, however gentle, with someone who could post something as willfully ignorant as that OP.

Sand would be kind btw

ginghambox · 16/09/2019 17:28

In your dreams. The usual suspects will be along shortly.

Independentcandidate · 16/09/2019 17:29

and yes you clearly have had your head stuck in the sand for three years 🤦

Stickybeaksid · 16/09/2019 17:29

I think the problem is Boris hasn’t offered any new deal. You can’t do a deal if there is nothing to talk about.

Independentcandidate · 16/09/2019 17:30

Hilarious....

Windyone · 16/09/2019 17:30

Surely there was a deal and we rejected it. Can you comment on this please OP?

Trewser · 16/09/2019 17:30

I must say the faux naivety of the EU on this issue is really tiresome. It's 'their' organisation so they should take some responsibility when members want to leave.

Danglingmod · 16/09/2019 17:31

Erm, they gave us a deal already. It was rejected three times in parliament. Not because it wasn't good enough, but because the hardcore remainers and the hardcore leavers just had to trash it. They cannot compromise.

DippyAvocado · 16/09/2019 17:31

The EU needs clarity and detail, not BK-style meaningless woffle. Xavier Bettel is quite right - it was the UK's decision to leave. We need to come up with a workable solution. Ages ago the EU produced a summary of the various options that were available, none of which fit in with the unachievable scenario leave voters thought they were going to get. The WA that TM agreed was probably the closest to a hard Brexit that could be achieved with a deal. Soft Brexit options like SM+CU could be achieved straight away.

QuiQuaiQuod · 16/09/2019 17:31

Barbarian- Can I add I have mild learning difficulties so please do not call me ignorant.

I'm just trying to make sense of it all.

Very day the news says something different.

Gingham- I know, I know.......

Theworldisfullofgs · 16/09/2019 17:32

Yes you are being naive.

The EU have been v clear. They have set out their terms and gave some movement when negotiating with May. Johnson hasn't offered anything new. He is all bluff.
Actually he is an idiot.

Trewser · 16/09/2019 17:34

But the original deal still tied us to the EU I believe.

HollowTalk · 16/09/2019 17:34

Sorry, OP, but you are being very naive. It's not up to the EU to put forward a deal. It's up to the UK to put one forward that the EU can agree to. Theresa May did that, but Parliament voted against it. (Even Boris voted against it twice out of three times.)

Boris keeps saying he has got a deal that the EU should accept, but the EU are saying it's all talk and he's not put anything to them at all.

sashh · 16/09/2019 17:34

The EU made an agreement with TM.

Boris voted it down,

BJ has prorogued parliament so it cannot be discussed further.

BJ has basically said, "make an agreement" but won't give them any idea of what he wants ad the EU think the WA is fine,

Parliament have brought a law in to force him to ask for an extension, he says he won't, that means him breaking the law and us crashing out without a deal.

RuggerHug · 16/09/2019 17:35

The deal can only be reopened when BJ provides a solution to the backstop. Without that nothing can happen. EU can't accept 'ah we'll figure it out in a few years, promise!' from the UK. It's up to the UK to change their lines or magic up a solution.

Trewser · 16/09/2019 17:36

I don't think the OP is being naive at all. The EU could be doing far more than they are, of course, but they gain more from this by sitting back and watching the UK tie itself in knots.

QuiQuaiQuod · 16/09/2019 17:38

Okay.

I did ask ifI was naïve. seems I am. but now I know why the furore.

Thanks for clearing all that up.

You want it over and done with? How long do you think it's going to take to negotiate trade deals after a no deal brexit? Decades, is the answer. No deal is the very beginning, not the end. If you want it over with, you need to entire thing cancelled. As for Europe Vs Johnson, if one party claims to be negotiating while actually living in cloud-cuckoo land when it comes to their 'red lines', how does that make it the other party's fault when they say 'ahaha, pull the other one'?

Incidentally, there are pages and pages of intelligent analysis of this online. It's a shame that you don't think that reading them might be a good idea before throwing up your hands and saying 'i don't get it', and then spouting nonsense about how Boris is just trying his best while the nasty EU stymie his every move. You don't need a PhD in politics to understand this stuff. Refusal to engage with the totally basic facts of the situation are what got us all into this mess in the first place.

GoodbyeRosie · 16/09/2019 17:38

Of course you voted remain.

Johnson is a liar and a fraud. I have absolutely no respect for anyone that thinks 'he knows what to do' the man has done nothing.

The onus is on us to prepare a deal if we want any of the amazing benefits of the huge resource that is the EU. They would love us to stay , but they are 20 odd countries together, they aren't going to pander to a jumped up little island.

If I handed my notice in at work, I wouldnt expect them to let me use their wifi, free drinks machine and photocopier.

As they say in Barnsley, 'Tha can't av tha penny AND tha bun '

marvellousnightforamooncup · 16/09/2019 17:38

The EU have been saying that Boris hasn't offered any new solutions to the backstop problem. (I don't know what he said today though on his visit.) All he's been saying is he wants to scrap the backstop but hasn't given a viable alternative. The EU are clear on their position and the onus isn't on them to solve our problems for us. They agreed a deal with TM. The Brexit cluster fuck is entirely on us.

PettyContractor · 16/09/2019 17:39

But the original deal still tied us to the EU I believe.

Not necessarily, I think, but it was theoretically possible we could end up in an arrangement we had no legal power to leave, so though I was irritated at the time, I've become more sympathetic to parliament rejecting May's deal.

The UK decided to leave.

The UK came to an agreement with the EU - the Withdrawal Agreement.

The UK then decided they didn't like the agreement.

The EU is waiting (politely) for the UK to come up with alternative proposals so they can decide if they are acceptable.

The UK has not done so to date.
