Am I missing something? Its the EU that don't want to do a deal, not the UK so why all the flack to Boris?

Am I naïve? Am I interpreting this right? I'm so sick and tired of the whole thing, but isn't it the EU that are playing silly buggers in their petulance? Boris is trying to do a deal.

Yet everyone is blasting HIM.

BTW I voted remain but accepted the result and just want it all over and done with, plus the attitude of Brussels and remOANERS,- not Remainers who accept result -has been abysmal .

I am not a fan of Boris BTW but he seems to know what to do. Or have I had my head stuck in the sand for the last 3 years?

Please be gentle, no bun fights, a sensible discussion please,

Yes op the eu have been less than fair. But, remembering there is very little positive about the eu, they have to make the whole thing seem painful and drawn out to put other countries off leaving. Because many do want to leave.

70 years of peace and prosperity on a continent whose nations had spent the previous 150 years at war with each other - fairly positive.

Largest, richest, most uniform trading bloc ever - positive, particularly for the smaller nations who have the increase it bargaining power that the EU brings to the table.

The UK is the country that has decided to leave. The EU is not making things painful - it is the UK Leavers, led by Johnson, who promised the impossible and cannot now deliver. The EU is under no obligation to accommodate a country that is leaving - why would it,?

No other countries have expressed a desire to leave.

HollowTalk · 16/09/2019 19:20

What I can't understand with both TM and BJ is that once they got into power they didn't say, "OK this is going to take quite a bit of time to sort out. Let's work out something that suits everyone and then put it to the EU."

Instead both of them went full steam ahead, without a fucking clue as to how they were going to get a deal that made everyone happy.

PamEars · 16/09/2019 19:21

And anyone who says ", I just want it all over and done with" is spectacularly uninformed
Yes, and anyone who says that and whines about ReMOANers is bullshitting that they voted to Remain. They just don't want to admit they contributed to this mess.

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 16/09/2019 19:23

This thread is an excellent illustration of why putting the whole thing to a public vote on the basic terms of 'in' or 'out' was such a fundamentally bad idea.

No there i have to agree. Nothing can happen without the will of parliment and Parliment hasnt got a will atm, regardless of how people did and didnt vote.

Personally i blame david Cameron, Theresa May's ridiculous general election as well as the EU.

With a Parliment as it stands Boris Johnson couldnt be anything other than a hopeless bluffoon... it's cut off all his negotiation teeth.

There must be a general election. But even thats been blocked

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 16/09/2019 19:24

Yanbu.

Look at today, not moving the press conference inside so Boris could speak.
The protestors ( remainers ) would have drowned him out & he knew that, so asked for the conference to take place inside.
They said no.
They did it on purpose.

Lowlandlucky · 16/09/2019 19:25

The EU were very clear 3 years ago when they said "we will punish you" at that point we should just have said ok, bye

Notonthestairs · 16/09/2019 19:27

They said no to moving the conference because Johnson asked to move it at the last minute and the space available wouldn't have held all the press that had been invited.
Not everything is a conspiracy!

GoodwithRocksandGems · 16/09/2019 19:27

Without Boris Johnson there wouldn’t be Brexit. He gave a shit idea credibility because he wanted the top job. I blame him for this mess and I’m glad it’s coming back to shit on him.

And to think I quite liked him as mayor of London. What a dangerous charlatan he turned out to be and the country has to suffer because of it.

FarTooMuchWashing · 16/09/2019 19:28

Lowlanlucky:
“The EU were very clear 3 years ago when they said "we will punish you" at that point we should just have said ok, bye”

Please provide any evidence that the EU said this. Otherwise you look like you e swallowed the nonsense the Daily Fail prints.

Notonthestairs · 16/09/2019 19:28

Plus I could hear the Luxembourg PM fine so presumably would have been able to hear Johnson.

Septembersunrays · 16/09/2019 19:29

Some may say the eu is responsible for peace, it isn't at all but that is a good eu propaganda sound bite.

The world war was so horrific, no one had appetite, money etc for war. There are so many reasons why we have not had major war in Europe.

But there are so many unhappy people within the eu who knows what that will spark in the future... Because its like a cult!

Hollow, leavers have been patiently waiting in good faith for three years whilst it's become more and more apparent that.... Actually there are more removers in parliament than leavers. More autocrats than Democrats and actually they will not honour the vote.
At the same time they have done nothing to actually try and get a good deal at all.

So I'm not sure Boris and gove saying hang on... Let's give this more time and see what the autocratic Remainers think.. Will cut it.

EerieSilence · 16/09/2019 19:29

@Septembersunrays - one of the reasons why the UK was one of the biggest contributors to EU coffers was the fact that UK had lots of manufacturing and also the City.
With the manufacturing moving elsewhere and even HQs of banking institutions moving partly to Frankfurt or France, the profits will simply transfer elsewhere. Unless the UK wants to become the tax haven, as it has been mentioned as a very poor attempt at blackmail several times.
The problem is - how many tax havens actually distribute those profits equally among the citizens? Who is going to be well off/rich when the UK becomes a tax haven? Will the money go into NHS, education, social welfare? Because judging by the articles in the Daily Mail (and I read it because it's an excellent probe for the strategy of the ruling class in the UK), the future is privatisation (NHS is cracking up, GPs and doctors in the hospitals are making mistakes, spongers are misusing free health care), decreased standards of the state school system (look at the articles about too many children, mocking articles about the school uniforms while indirectly praising the strict headmasters but complaining about the children of today not being up to it), family of 8 on 50K per year want a new house for free from the state etc. - these will all be targets once the Brexit is over and the Tories will rule forever because they have no real competition, with the LibDems still struggling for votes and Corbyn nursing his academic dream of socialist Britain like an alcoholic nurses his 4th bottle of vodka in a day.

HollowTalk · 16/09/2019 19:31

I don't remember the EU saying, "We will punish you." Can you link to the evidence for that, @Lowlandlucky?

EerieSilence · 16/09/2019 19:33

But there are so many unhappy people within the eu who knows what that will spark in the future... Because its like a cult!

Not sure what stuff you're on but can I get a little sachet of it? It would do me great to see the world through unicorn hallucinations for a while.

Septembersunrays · 16/09/2019 19:34

Hmm far..

Off the top of my head barnier said something like... I'll have done my job if leaving is so painful they will want to stay.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 16/09/2019 19:34

Notonthestairs

The protesters were anti brexit protesters so of course you could here the EU guy Hmm

BarbariansMum · 16/09/2019 19:34

What they actually said was that we wouldn't get such a favourable trade deal outside of the EU as we would as a member. Which was dastardly and underhanded of them apparently Hmm

Septembersunrays · 16/09/2019 19:35

Eerie, it's a trading bloc. Why the fanatical adoration for it? Why hats, flags, possibly an army, talk of the eu empire?

PortiaCastis · 16/09/2019 19:36

We would have heard bojo speak if he hadn't thrown his toys out if his pram and scurried away, the Luxembourg leader was coming over loud and clear so why wouldn't bojo!

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 16/09/2019 19:37

it isn't at all but that is a good eu propaganda sound bite.... There are so many reasons why we have not had major war in Europe.

Yes this. Firstly wars are fought differently. The advent of the nuclear weapon means that wars between countries that both have them would become mutually deadly very quickly. The nature of war is different because of Nuclear weapons

Wars have happened in Europe or on our borders and Europe has utterly failed to stop them, Yugoslavia, Russian annexation of Crimea, we still even have a divided capital (half) in Europe and yet Europe looked like it might let the "perpetrator" in for a while.

EerieSilence · 16/09/2019 19:40

@Septembersunrays - please find me one single quote by an EU politician talking about an EU Empire.
I see nothing wrong about the celebration of peace and people working together. And if you think that there was no war conflict in Europe after 1945, you probably need to re-sit your modern history.

pointythings · 16/09/2019 19:41

Why hats, flags

Why not? People wear Union flag hats all the time. They fly flags too - either the Union flag or the St George cross when England are playing football. Some people are proud of their country and that's fine. Other people are proud to be a part of a group of 27 nations working together in trade, peace and culture. The UK isn't perfect. The EU isn't perfect. Why is it not OK to like either (or both) nevertheless.

And you say the EU is a cult... Pot, kettle.

MrsMaiselsMuff · 16/09/2019 19:44

@Septembersunrays Barnier said,

"As much as I am sad to see you leave, I will do everything to make this farewell the least painful possible, for you and for us."

Which couldn't be more different to your quote!

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 16/09/2019 19:46

one single quote by an EU politician talking about an EU Empire

Ill do one better

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_of_Europe

Contains the history of those Politicians who have advocated for Federal Europe. Most are European politicians. The lisbon treaty sets the foundations in place

MrsMaiselsMuff · 16/09/2019 19:46

The earliest reference I can find to the "we will punish you" quote is in The Sun.

You couldn't make this up!

Well, The Sun could.
