11 yo DD & Hotter Shoes

X took DD school shoe shopping. We discussed getting DM,s or Clark's. DD now has a pair of Hotter black school shoes. Aren't they for the over 50's?
Will this potentially ruin dds first year at high school?

WIBU to raise the matter and suggest we return them?

NB: This would also mean I'd have to spend this weekend looking for School shoes.

Depends on the shoes really. If she's ok with them, go with it!

TeeniefaeTroon · 28/08/2019 23:56

I would return them, I don't know what they look like but I do know that I take my granny shoe shopping and that's the brand she buys and she's in her 80's. My DD got converses or vans when she started high school. Black with black soles.

AuntieStella · 28/08/2019 23:58

Ageism is limiting.

I think your scenario proves that

Everything is better when it's ditched

RB68 · 28/08/2019 23:59

if she is happy with them you need to let it go and stop judging the book by the cover

Babymamamama · 29/08/2019 00:00

She will be way more comfy in those than most other brands. I wouldn’t worry about it if it doesn’t bother her. I got DD to try a pair of size 4 Hotter boots only the other day in TM Maxx. They were lovely but too big. If they’d fitted I would have purchased them. They were so soft and really suited her. Their styling must have really improved.

KellyHall · 29/08/2019 00:01

Having uncomfortable feet ruins my day! If she likes them, they're comfy and they're smart enough for the uniform policy, let her keep them.

Bullies are a-holes who will always find some way of belittling others so trying to be one step ahead of them is pointless. Make sure your dd has good self-esteem and a strong support network and it won't matter what she wears to school :)

TheClitterati · 29/08/2019 00:03

@AuntieStella are you saying I should ditch the ageism? Not quite following. Not meaning to be ageist. I'm in my 50's and I wouldn't wear these shoes. My mum would probably like them.

DD can't wear anything like a trainer. Must be black leather non trainers.

These are black lace ups. Fairly ugly - now I'm a fan of the fugly shoe but these are pretty bad. I do think DD likes them but they were purchased 5 hours into shoe shopping on hot bank holiday. I'm not sure how that affected her position.

Ok yes you talk sense. Thanks. I'm having a late night WTF wobble moment.

DD has great self confidence - I'd like her to stay that way.

Having a quick look on their website, I can't see any lace up shoes that don't look like shoes for the elderly. I think it is the rounded soles that do it. I'd take them back.

HennyPennyHorror · 29/08/2019 00:07

If DD likes them then I'd not worry. No self respecting 12 year has any CLUE what brands over 50s like.

They won't know they're "Hotter" brand will they. Nip to the school at kicking out time and look at the kids' feet. It will comfort you.

TheClitterati · 29/08/2019 00:09

The intention was to buy brogues like the Clark's. But she got these hotters instead. Guess they are comfy and will do for a year.

Is it any of those? It might help if you let us see the shoes....some I can see would look like Granny shoes others not so bad.

steff13 · 29/08/2019 00:10

All the black lace-ups on the US site look like orthopedic shoes. But if she likes them, that's what matters.

HennyPennyHorror · 29/08/2019 00:10

X post....they look ok to me Op. Plain. But not a brogue...if DD isn't happy I'd take them back. If she IS happy...well fine.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 29/08/2019 00:11

They just look like school shoes to me. I understand why you're worried but surely no one will know the brand?

TheClitterati · 29/08/2019 00:11

X post - can you see the pics I posted?

My high school was dreadful and I was taunted for 3 years for having the wrong shoes. So it sits a bit close to home for me.

OP posts:
TinklyLittleLaugh · 29/08/2019 00:13

To be fair my DD2 had Vans and Keds virtually indistinguishable from those Hotters.

NChangeForNoReason · 29/08/2019 00:14

She's going to get slatted and u will end up having to buy new anyway.

Save urself some time, money and daughters tears by buying something a little more age appropriate.

TheClitterati · 29/08/2019 00:14

marmiteloversunite · 29/08/2019 00:14

I prefer the brogues. Have they got the big hotter writing inside? My friends make fun of my hotter sandals and I'm 49!Grin I would take them back if you can be bothered.

Pickledbanana · 29/08/2019 00:14

I reckon a confident child could carry them off actually. Is she ‘on trend’ in other ways?

TheClitterati · 29/08/2019 00:15

Yep - big HUGE HOTTER inside.

OP posts:
MorganKitten · 29/08/2019 00:15

Does she like them? If so what’s the issue? Clarke’s are horrible shoes anyway.

chocolatebrazilnut · 29/08/2019 00:17

I’d take them back. It’s the soles, with no definition between the heel and the rest of the sole, that mark them out as old lady shoes. Sorry if that’s being ageist, but I think she’ll be begging you for some different shoes within a week of starting year 7!
