to think that if you say you think climate change is an issue, you don't go on 4 private jet trips in a month

Because there are better ways of travelling.

No matter who you are..

Mayagoldchoc · 19/08/2019 16:39

Yanbu. I suppose drawing attention to the issue is still better than denying it or avoiding the topic though. Some people might be more likely to listen to someone who doesn't seem 'weird' or 'hippyish' - sometimes those types are better at preaching to the converted.

chomalungma · 19/08/2019 16:42

I just wonder if some journalist or activist is going to ask them publicly about how their private jet flights help with climate change?

OP posts:
whattodowith · 19/08/2019 16:43

This will probably be zapped like the previous thread. MN don’t take kindly to posters slating the Royals.

(I agree with you though)

Happysummer2020 · 19/08/2019 18:29

Agree OP

RaspberryRippleCrisps · 19/08/2019 19:03

Are you referring to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex? If so,I totally agree that they are a pair of hypocrites. Just because they've said that they will 'only have two children in order to save the planet',they think it's perfectly ok to use private jets numerous times.

User3468793 · 19/08/2019 19:14

Text below is from Elton John's Instagram. Apparently the carbon footprint was offset for the trip. Though he makes it sound like they have an awful life and the public is supposed to sympathise with the fact that they need a "private holiday" in a place with "safety and tranquility". Hmmmmm.

^I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week.

Prince Harry’s Mother, Diana Princess Of Wales was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death.
After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquility of our home. To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight. To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™

I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis.^

Whoever is doing PR for them should seriously be fired. Even if the trip was carbon neutral, this was not clarified in any of the articles. It's almost surreal that the defense had to come from Elton John himself (lol). And with spectacularly bad timing, there's a new preachy quote on their Instagram account today. I'm neither a huge fan or hater of M&H, but this media spectacle is really cringeworthy to watch.

araiwa · 19/08/2019 19:20

Can hardly put them on a ryanair flight

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 19/08/2019 19:25

Can hardly put them on a ryanair flight

Why not?

Surely they can afford to pay to sit together.

HeresMe · 19/08/2019 19:28

Do what you preach or shut the hell up, people wonder why people hate bono.

Do what I say not what I do will always be a non starter for people.

Yaflamingalah · 19/08/2019 19:28

What does that even mean; “making a contribution to Carbon Footprint”? No amount of money can undo the damage done by talking a private jet flight. It makes no sense!

The whole bloody debacle is just so cringe worthy.

MakeLemonade · 19/08/2019 19:29

The thing with climate change is it inspires a shit load of what aboutery and critique.

They’d still be using private jets if they had 12 children, there is no point letting perfect be the enemy of good, if they want to reduce their footprint by having fewer children (who would in all likelihood have massive carbon footprints) then that’s great. Of course it would be even better if they could fly commercial but any step in the right direction is a positive one.

Kokeshi123 · 19/08/2019 20:17

Of course it would be even better if they could fly commercial but any step in the right direction is a positive one.

But it is only a step in any direction if they were planning to have more children and then decided not to for this reason. Lady is 38 and hs only just had her first baby, most likely they would have only have a couple of kids anyway.

NeverTwerkNaked · 19/08/2019 20:21

I think the idea that you can pay to "offset" damage is so dangerous

faw2009 · 19/08/2019 20:30

Carbon offset sounds pretty suspect to me.

Unfortunately, this type of news sends out mixed messages about combating climate change.

GodolphianArabian · 19/08/2019 20:35

I think the idea that you can pay to offset your environmental damage yet again let's the rich off the hook. So they can continue to live a lifestyle that is hugely damaging to the environment while preaching to the rest of us as to how we should live.

chomalungma · 19/08/2019 20:39

Are you referring to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Might be.....

Can hardly put them on a ryanair flight

Why not - I've seen a Royal on a charter flight before.

OP posts:
Helloitsmemargaret · 19/08/2019 20:41

I've seen Prince Charles and Prince Philip on a big standard Great Northern train from Kings Cross (well alright first class on a big standard train). I don't see why they can't use Eurostar.

Helloitsmemargaret · 20/08/2019 06:53

Bog not big 🙄

PianoTuner567 · 20/08/2019 07:00

They can’t go on a bloody Ryanair flight. Imagine the security faff!

EskewedBeef · 20/08/2019 07:06

They're obviously massive hypocrites, but Uncle Elton wading in with an emotional defence just makes it worse. There's nothing to stop them using less damaging modes of transport, but they simply don't want to - they should be honest about that.

chomalungma · 20/08/2019 07:08

They can’t go on a bloody Ryanair flight. Imagine the security faff!

They've flown commercial before...not difficult to do

OP posts:
EskewedBeef · 20/08/2019 07:11

They could go on a scheduled flight. Not a budget airline offering nothing but cheap seats crammed together, but of course they could get the best seats on a decent flight that was going to Nice anyway with hundreds of other people.

Tolleshunt · 20/08/2019 07:20

I’m sympathetic to sensitivities around press intrusion, for Harry, but they are simply going to have to stop using their position to preach, if they want the media to leave them alone.

Wanting to influence others less privileged, while acting in a hypocritical fashion, and not being called out on that, seems to be wanting to have your cake and eat it. The British press won’t stand for that. Their press/communications officer should be advising them of this.

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 20/08/2019 07:28

I have zero interest in the royals. I am also not a big eco warrior. I’m still outraged by the whole farce. If you want to take private jets, crack on. Personally I couldn’t care less. Unfortunately if you are going to bang on about climate change and saving the world in the middle of your jet flights then you are leaving yourself wide open to judgement, as people have the right to do. No one likes hypocrites.

PianoTuner567 · 20/08/2019 07:29

And maybe they will fly commercial next time, it probably depends on where they’re going, who’s going with them, etc. On this particular occasion, they were offered a private jet for a private holiday so did it.
