to think that if you say you think climate change is an issue, you don't go on 4 private jet trips in a month

Because there are better ways of travelling.

No matter who you are..

Do the other royals fly private jets? ever?

Legomadx2 · 20/08/2019 07:34

YANBU. They are massive hypocrites.

But someone will be along to call you a racist any minute now.

flumpybear · 20/08/2019 07:34

It's a typical person of privilege thing.... do as i say, not as I do, because I'm above you, all you plebs need to respect our environment like I tell you to,so I can look like I've done it for the world yet been a hypocritical fat cat .... except the world is wise to this behaviour

I wonder what they'll do if they have twins next time around 🧐

Toneitdown · 20/08/2019 07:36

Of course they can get a commercial flight. First/business class is a thing. They have enough money to Corden off a whole section of the plane! And I'm sure they'd just about have enough cash left over to buy a couple of seats for security too. Maybe even a packet of peanuts as well, assuming Brexit hasn't driven the price up too much.

EleanorReally · 20/08/2019 07:38

So Elton John paid for their flight, and that makes it ok They should have made a better decision.

EleanorReally · 20/08/2019 07:39

How many aeroplanes does Trump use when he flies?

Sandybval · 20/08/2019 07:41

@EleanorReally he isn't preaching about saving the environment though is he.

SaraNade · 20/08/2019 08:00

Yes, you are being Very unreasonable. They are the Monarchy, they can hardly travel on public transport, for legal/security reasons. They HAVE to take a private jet, I think any reasonable person would understand this. To go off at the Royal family for flying privately is very petty, illogical and irrational imo. Common sense has to come into play somewhere, surely.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/08/2019 08:04

Many do fly commercial. SaraNade.

Harry did, the Cambridges do, they don't have to do it, they want to do it.

SaraNade · 20/08/2019 08:07

Sandybval So the take home message from all this is that one should never try to do anything right for the environment lest you make one little slip-up where everyone will be just waiting for the gotcha moment. Attitudes like this discourage people from doing the right thing, because people will tear them down at any opportunity. No wonder the world is in such bad shape with such pettiness.

Polyjuice · 20/08/2019 08:07

But SaraNade this is simply incorrect. The royal family has always taken public transport and commercial flights. Yes they take the entourage along and will travel first class. BA are well used to handling the VIP security requirements. It’s wrong to say they have to travel by private jet and they always have, because they haven’t.

CruellaFeinberg · 20/08/2019 08:08

Shame.you dont have any common sense. Of course they.can travel commercial. FFS, they have first class where the plebs dont see.the first class travellers etc.

They are just people, they are not special, they are rich

PianoTuner567 · 20/08/2019 08:11

Well, if I had a 4 month old baby and a short flight to do, where I knew everyone would be whispering, staring, waving bloody phones trying to film me, watching, analysing and potentially criticising my every interaction with my husband, child and staff, I’d take a private jet if offered one.

I agree it’s hypocritical but maybe she’s tired, wanted a holiday and just took the easy option.

Sandybval · 20/08/2019 08:13

@SaraNade nope, everyone should do what they can, but can you not see why people get their backs up, to have them demanding we all change to help the planet whilst they carry on their life of opulence and doing as they please? It's counterproductive really as people get annoyed that it seems like do as I say not as I do because we are better than you.

Fuma · 20/08/2019 08:13

I don't understand how giving money to an environmental organisation makes an activity "carbon neutral"? Is that what we all need to do now then? Blart around as much crap as we like as long as we donate to Greenpeace or something and that means the planet will be ok?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/08/2019 08:15

If offsetting worked then we would have solved the climate change problem long ago.

EdithWeston · 20/08/2019 08:17

The Royals do not need to travel on private jets - oodles of precedent for using scheduled flights and their close protection teams can make good security arrangements for that type of flight.

Being rich enough to pay an environment tax (carbon offsetting) does help a bit. But it doesn't do anything to tackle the actual problem, it just means the very rich can keep exploiting the planet.

I think this was a misjudgement.

This will probably be zapped like the previous thread. MN don’t take kindly to posters slating the Royals.

Threads posted in the Royal Family topic seem to survive, including when negative.

Polyjuice · 20/08/2019 08:19

Exactly.
Carbon offset is another thing the super rich can do so they can carry on their activities unhindered by climate change. But they still continue to preach at us peasants as the special rules don’t apply to us.
I try to make changes in my own life but if they chose to travel everywhere by private jet it is their choice. But it’s the hypocrisy that irritates me.
If it really worked I’m sure Greta would have hopped in economy and then planted a few trees to make up for it Hmm

EleanorReally · 20/08/2019 08:19

But why are you assuming this is all down to MM?
did she make the decision.
I doubt that very much, but again you are focusing on MM

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/08/2019 08:22

Yeah, offsetting is just to shut us up.

No amount of money will refreeze the Arctic ice or clean up the air we breath and remove the air and noise pollution from unnecessary flights.

JoyceJeffries · 20/08/2019 08:25

YANBU

Absolute hypocrits. And off setting your carbon footprint is code for the rich will do exactly as they’ve always done but the plebs will have to change their ways.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 20/08/2019 08:25

Maybe because Harry was seen happily flying commercial before? But then so was Meghan.

I'm not assuming it's MM's decision, it doesn't matter whose decision it is, but once you start bleating about the environment you might as well start making the right choices yourself. It's the hypocrisy in their decision.

Skinnychip · 20/08/2019 08:25

Regardless of whether they NEED to travel by private jet or not (I'm pretty sure i once saw on the news, the Queen using a public train) i think its the hypocrisy and preaching that people object to.
Completely unrelated but every series of the apprentice i get annoyed about how un eco it is - Lord sugar flying in in his helicopter and "the candidates" being chaufeured around, sometimes only 1 or 2 in one enormous car. They're always getting stuck in traffic i think they should use the tube for the london based tasks!!

Witchinghour1 · 20/08/2019 08:27

Totally agree with Fuma’s point. You can’t take a private jet and it be a carbon neutral flight. The damage is done. If it were that simple, we would carry on flying long haul and make a quick donation at the end. Same end result for the environment.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 20/08/2019 08:29

They didn't have to go to Nice at all. Plenty of nice places to have a quiet break without flying. If you are that committed to environmental causes, you must acknowledge that some sacrifices might have to be made in this area.
