to think that if you say you think climate change is an issue, you don't go on 4 private jet trips in a month

Because there are better ways of travelling.

No matter who you are..

That message means do what you can, try where you can

But they are not even 1% trying. They don’t have to go to Ibiza and France. They could fly first class like other A listers manage to do.

Userzzzzz · 20/08/2019 09:25

It’s like celebs haranguing people to donate money for events like comic relief. It is far easier to be generous when you’re a millionaire. They’re not really trying very hard.

themouldneverbotheredmeanyway · 20/08/2019 09:31

Ryanair isn't the only alternative to a private jet. I wouldn't recommend they take Ryanair, no.

Train - book out an entire carriage if they want for privacy. I think the Queen has done this before.
Sail.
First class on a good airline. Other Royals fly this way.
Be driven there.
Don't go to Nice for a holiday. It's optional.

AtmosClock · 20/08/2019 09:33

YANBU

Hithere12 · 20/08/2019 09:37

Also Kate & William did not use a private jet for their Mustique trip this year, they flew on a scheduled British Airways flight. So it can be done.

SunflowerSunshine · 20/08/2019 09:43

I don’t think this thread will last long, like the other one.

I think that Elton John statement is quite sad- so it’s okay for rich people to have different rules because they can afford to undo the damage. What does that even mean? I know his intentions are good but I think that’s a very dangerous statement actually.

They have a beautiful home, endless properties in the UK countryside to escape to- places that normal people could only ever dream of.

Like I said on the last thread I think it’s a shame as I really wanted to like them. They need to get some new PR. I love the queen and I think the royal family is important but honestly they’re just not doing themselves any favours.

It wouldn’t even undo the damage though 😳 You can’t BUY off or off set emissions. Most charities are using the bulk of their money to campaign and raise awareness at this point. He’s ridiculous.

PeculiarBerries · 20/08/2019 09:56

Yes Charles & Harry have talked about climate change but Harry has done speeches, interviews in a short period of time when showing he doesn’t really care, or he does care but thinks only the plebs should be the ones who make sacrifices.

It's the latter, sadly unsurprising.

SunflowerSunshine · 20/08/2019 09:57

You’re right. I almost believed his statement but yep exactly - he’s talking crap when there is no excuse or buying your way out of it. The damage is done!

I’ve never been an ego warrior but It makes me worry for my daughters future and I think people are starting to realise now. They deserve all the criticism they get.

TitianaTitsling · 20/08/2019 10:00

They HAVE to take a private jet they don't HAVE to do anything.... Would their worlds have collapsed if they didn't get this holiday to France?

Richak · 20/08/2019 10:01

Totally agree with you, OP. Most of these celebrities undo all the good work done by ordinary citizens who are truly passionate about a cause.

SuzieBishop · 20/08/2019 10:02

It’s funny that people moan about the celebrities zipping about Europe etc yet no-one seems to think about the paparazzi who jet about after them chasing them in every location who take the very photos everyone’s tutting over.

Ilovemylabrador · 20/08/2019 10:11

The irony of them all.
Not just the royals but others -people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
All the royal family take private jets at times, they have many holidays and get aways that aren't reported in the press. So do 'those in the media' - For most of them it is what they expect. The 'little people' need to do more and we are doing our bit 'by promoting and telling them to do it - using our position for good messages' is the mantra. Unfortunately those 'little people' are not stupid. We see the irony and we don't like it.
Sometimes deals are done with the media to promote a certain image and not report on less flattering allegations or rumours etc. Free press does not exist any more. The establishment protect themselves.

Rainbunny · 20/08/2019 10:19

Oh please, the Elton John excuse "I paid to offset the carbon footprint of the private jet trip" is bollocks. It's about as useful as my contention that when I steal food from my DH's plate it doesn't have calories!

By all means live your luxurious life, take your private jets but don't lecture the public on how they should live their lives more ecologically ethically. I really just want them to go away.

Hithere12 · 20/08/2019 10:23

The Cambridge’s didn’t use a private jet for their last three holidays. They used scheduled BA flights. They use them for work purposes to take all their staff etc but they generally don’t for family holidays.

Fairyliz · 20/08/2019 10:29

I can’t get over the hectic year 🤣. Can someone let Elton know I’ve had an hectic year too, a private jet to the south of France would be fab

scaryteacher · 20/08/2019 10:42

The fact that they're now accepting handouts from celebrities, let alone demonstrating gross hypocrisy merely confirms just how removed from reality they and the rest of the Royal family are.
The more I hear about these two the less appealing they sound.
Freeloaders.

This, in spades.

Skinnychip · 20/08/2019 10:55

I haven't flown for at least 5 years (due to budget more than anything else) but i find there are a lot of conflicting ideas or contradictions regarding saving the planet. Eg I'm guilty of getting 95% of my shopping from the supermarket. Our town doesnt have a market although during the summer we dont buy much veg because we grow a lot of our own. BUT a town a few miles away has a very expensive eco shop where you can buy loose rice, pasta, cereal dried fruit etc as well as cleaning products and toiletries, but by no means big enough for a full on food shop. I used it once or twice when i happened to be in that town but I'm in a quandary which is worse: one tesco delivery (with all its offending plastic) or multiple trips, mostly by car, to more eco shops or markets....

LoobyLou1976 · 20/08/2019 10:57

As others have said, its the absolute hypocrisy of them that rankles, not the fact that they flew on a private jet. They must know that they are under scrutiny from the public, and they chose to make the very unwise decision to do this. Whoever is advising them should be fired. As for 'offsetting' the carbon footprint, this is just to ease the conscience of those who can afford to do so.
Once the emissions are in the environment there is no way to remove them by throwing money at the problem. It just gives the impression that the super rich can use their wealth and privilege to do whatever they want, that their actions do not matter because they are somehow better than everyone else.
I'm sure they have had a 'hectic year' with all the gala attending and ribbon cutting, helped by their crowd of flunkies, maids, cleaners, nannies, butlers and assistants. It must be so hard and I'm sure they needed this holiday from their demanding lives.

IdentifyasTired · 20/08/2019 11:05

It's the equivalent of Jezebels in The Handmaid's Tale. The elite preach to the lower classes about morality but they commit the very actions they condemn others for.

zafferana · 20/08/2019 11:06

It's a case of 'Do as I say peasants, not as I do!' innit.

Is that the Paparazzi that travel in private jets?

Quite. Also, the paps aren't preaching eco friendly messages at us. That's the point - it's the hypocrisy that pisses us normal people off, not (necessarily) the fact that they're taking private jets like the rest of us take buses.

mydogisthebest · 20/08/2019 12:21

As much as I like Meghan and Harry I do think they are hypocrites but so are Kate and William. William spoke about overpopulation but then had 3 children.

I hate the fact that newspapers tear into Meghan yet treat Kate like some kind of saint

sportinguista · 20/08/2019 12:24

Being poor is pretty much an effective way of being eco friendly. We can't afford to take a holiday of any kind so don't fly or drive, in fact we now can't even afford to go anywhere, we don't even eat out. We don't have a car and cannot afford to use public transport, so we walk everywhere even my husband walks the hours journey to and from work everyday. We only put on the heating when absolutely necessary and turn off the lights when not in use. We recycle as much as possible, never use plastic bags, I grow veg and flowers, I get loose veg, we are vegetarian and have been so for 25 years. Going head to head for carbon offset I reckon I win over Harry and Meghan hands down!
