To think I met some of the nastiest people ever today?

I was at a shopping centre today with my mum and DP. As the escalator wasn’t working, the alternative was a large flight of steep stairs or the lift. As my mum suffers with a heart condition that leaves her breathless easily, we went in the lift.

As the doors of the lift began to close, a young couple with a pushchair hastily tried to get on. As DP put him arm up to stop the doors closing, the woman of the two angrily said “Why are you letting ‘t doors close on me! Fucking idiot,”. DP actually APOLOGISED (despite the fact he had tried to stop the doors from shutting). The woman went on, aggressively, “You shouldn’t even be in the lift, there’s stairs over there!”. My mum calmly said “I have a heart condition, I can’t manage the stairs,”. But the woman and her partner just kept on, insisting that we shouldn’t be in the lift, that we were idiots, blah blah. My mum turned to me and said that stress isn’t good for her either (she was getting really worked up by this abuse). The man overheard her and said “Yeah, stress doesn’t do me good, either!”. As if the absolute buffoon was the one who should be stressed.

On and on they went, the entire time we were in the lift (which felt like an eternity). They just wouldn’t stop. I just wanted them pack it in; it was upsetting me, it was upsetting my mum. I said “shut up,” exasperated, as we were about to get out the lift. They didn’t respond to that.

Ahh, just writing that all out again has me shaking and feeling upset. I just can’t understand how and why people like that exist. Just nastiness and aggression for no reason at all.

Feel free to share any similar stories! I know MNetters have a few.

People like that are why I often wish I had a cattle prong with me when I'm out in public.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 03/08/2019 19:13

Oh I’d have struggled not to piss myself laughing at them. Then I’d probably have gotten punched Grin

Pipandmum · 03/08/2019 19:13

Their poor child.
You can only console yourselves that these people must have pretty miserable lives to be so aggressive to strangers who were trying to help them.
Posted on another thread today that a friend was struggling at the air port with a baby in sling, a toddler, a pushchair and trolley of luggage. She couldn’t get the pushchair on top of the trolley while carrying the baby so in desperation asked a passing woman for help who just looked at her and said ‘you people and your f*ing kids’!

FloralTeacup · 03/08/2019 19:15

@Pipandmum

That’s precisely what I thought! The aggression in their voices was like nothing I’d ever witnessed, over nothing at all.

Ooh, that’s awful. It makes me feel so down to think some people are just so nasty and heartless.

I wouldn’t give people like that a second thought tbh. Self entitled people everywhere. Certainly not worth upsetting yourself over.

FloralTeacup · 03/08/2019 19:20

@Yogagirl123

I know, you’re right. I need to grow a thicker skin; the smallest thing works me up! It was the shock of their behaviour, more than anything.

Buddytheelf85 · 03/08/2019 19:20

Bloody hell, what absolute maniacs! Why did it even matter that you were in the lift? It sounds like there was enough space for everyone anyway?

Gelpens · 03/08/2019 19:20

Me and DH who was carrying our 4 month old across the road of a car park of a supermarket today almost got run over by some twat driving towards us who must have thought it would be funny to speed up. So fast if I would have hesitated for 3 seconds would have been hit.

If it were just me or DH I'd be annoyed, but my tiny baby could have been killed and I am still raging and thinking of ways I'd love to get revenge on the driver!!!

Zebraaa · 03/08/2019 19:20

As far as I’m aware anyone can use a lift! It’s not reserved for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

Fluffycloudland77 · 03/08/2019 19:21

There’s an underclass in this country, there part of it.

cubed123 · 03/08/2019 19:22

Just ignore them OP, there are wankers everywhere. Sorry you and your mum has a bad experience. I hope she’s feeling ok.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 03/08/2019 19:22

Some idiot raced at me when I was crossing the road at about 8.5 months pregnant. I was like nelly the elephant then, so it was pretty obvious that the boy racer was actually speeding towards a heavily pregnant woman.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 03/08/2019 19:23

(Some people are just idiots).

Freshstart40 · 03/08/2019 19:24

I know what you mean OP. I get a similar feeling when I 'read' the Mailonline. I despair at the lack of humanity. Thankfully these people are in the minority. It's not a nice feeling though. Kudos to you all for keeping your cool.

flumposie · 03/08/2019 19:26

there are vile people in the world and you met some Angry

eurochick · 03/08/2019 19:28

What ignorant twats. It must have been horrible being shut in an enclosed space with them. At least the lift didn't break down...

Rose87777 · 03/08/2019 19:28

Omg 🙄🙄 people are bloody ridiculous. Any of you could have had any sort of unseen illness/be recovering from surgery/feeling unwell!!! Disgusting behaviour! If they had said any of this to me I definitely would have said “sorry, have you read through my medical history, how on earth do you know I can take the stairs?!!!” Vile.

FloralTeacup · 03/08/2019 19:31

@Buddytheelf85 There was. Room for another pushchair at least! Maniacs is the right word!

Those are horrible stories involving idiot drivers and children. Why on Earth would anyone drive like that in a car park?! What do they expect to happen? Makes you wonder.

TheInvestigator · 03/08/2019 19:32

I tend to start laughing when people start behaving like that. They are just so ridiculous and they think they're behaving in a totally acceptable way! I don't understand how their brains are functioning and I end up laughing at them. It usually shuts them up.

bevelino · 03/08/2019 19:34

@skybluee Your post made me lol 😂

CigarsofthePharoahs · 03/08/2019 19:34

I had someone repeatedly swear at me about a lift once.
Was trying to get to the top floor of a car park and the lift was being awkward. I had a knee injury a d couldn't manage the stairs.
It stopped on the floor below the one we wanted and a lady went to get on with a buggy. Then her friend said "No, it's going up."
Buggy lady swore at me and got off.
Then the sodding lift went down! So I get back to the floor below the one I wanted and the same lady is there who said "Oh fucking hell, not you again!"
Then she kept pressing the button as the doors closed so they kept reopening.

FloralTeacup · 03/08/2019 19:34

@Rose87777 I know! I wish I’d been able to respond something calm and clever. Instead I just stood there, silently seething! They weren’t even facing us, their backs were turned away from us the entire time. The expression on my face would’ve said a thousand words, if only they’d seen Grin

OP posts:
Sorryisntgoodenough · 03/08/2019 19:35

Thankfully these people are in the minority

But the nastiness and entitlement are breeding. After working for over 30 years of dealing with people I can honestly say I HATE people, these sorts of people are becoming less of the minority unfortunately Sad

FloralTeacup · 03/08/2019 19:39

@CigarsofthePharoahs That tale made me laugh! “Not her again” Grin I think it’s safe to say you won in that feud!

OP posts:
Sockworkshop · 03/08/2019 19:44

These people have misplaced anger -they have to find an outlet for it so they try to find something, anything really so that they can erupt .
So sorry OP FlowersCakeBrew
