Corned Beef Hash Controversy

Scripto · 28/07/2019 17:45

H and I are discussing the way to make this. He’s waving a masher around and is obviously wrong.

  1. Parboil cubed pots.
  2. Fry onions
  3. Add pots to onions
  4. Brown a bit
  5. Chuck in oven with cheese on top
  6. Eat with baked beans and a fried egg.

He’s also suggesting green stuff which is so wrong I may have to kill him.

No! Boil pots and diced onions together, add salt pepper butter, mash, add cubed corned beef. Put under grill to get crispy, gravy and eat!
Sometimes I put leftovers in a pastry case and bake for tomo....pasty!
To each his own!

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2019 17:20

I'm guessing the one with rice is the Caribbean version?

Seems those of us brought up on the stew variant are in the minority.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/07/2019 17:25

I do it pretty much the same way as your husband does it/likes it but I use salad potatoes - parboil them for a bit and then cut them into thickish slices.

Then the same process in your OP.

I haven't put cheese on top but I might start doing that. I wouldn't make it with mash, that would be like baby food to me.

Aaarrgghhh · 29/07/2019 17:26

I always assumed it was literally mashed potato with corned beef mixed through.. we have corned beef and rice and it’s a favourite with my lot, I’m obviously no help on this thread lol.

sophiasnail · 29/07/2019 17:28

Mashed. Must be grilled to make top crispy and eaten with brown sauce.

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 29/07/2019 17:29

I make it with left over slow cooked pulled beef and shredded potato and onion... (Runs and ducks for cover)

Mumsymumphy · 29/07/2019 17:30

What is this sorcery you speak of??

Corned beef hash is:
Corned beef
Cubed potatoes
Onions
Carrots
Stock cube

Stick it all in a pan, boil then simmer. Gravy granules to thicken if desired.

H2OH20Everywhere · 29/07/2019 17:33

It definitely needs mashed potatoes and baked in the oven.

My favourite topping is a bag of crisps - tear the very corner of the bagm smash the crisps to smithereens then sprinkle on the top. You get a really nice crispy salty topping that way.

Haven't made it for years. Might have to do one on Friday. Thanks, OP!

Toooldtobearsed2 · 29/07/2019 17:33

Fry some onions, mash some potatoes.

Open tin of corned beef. Mash potatoes, corned beef and onions, with salt and pepper together.
Put in oven to go crispy. Serve with sausages so browned they are cremated and baked beans.

I am old. I knows these things 😁

MammaBot211 · 29/07/2019 17:40

Rockbird · 29/07/2019 17:40

My mum puts mushrooms in hers...

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 29/07/2019 17:44

Boil potatoes onion and carrots when soft drain add a little bit of milk and butter add the corned beef mash all together top with cheese and pop in the oven for 20mins

Ratonastick · 29/07/2019 17:45

Mash or cubed? Meh, depends what leftovers I have in the fridge. But where, exactly, is the brown sauce in this dispute? A few odd references to Worcester sauce, a barely tolerable alternative, but brown sauce? I’ll tell you where. Nowhere, that’s where. Bloody heathens, the lot of you.

Douberry · 29/07/2019 17:48

This is weird. DH and I only just discussed corned beef hash this weekend. Fantasising about CBH now.. Cubed or mashed I don't give a damn! Grin

Which brand is best?

MrsTommyBanks · 29/07/2019 17:50

I'm guessing the one with rice is the Caribbean version?

Now that I could understand. But my friend was from a deeply rooted Cockney family. All white British. It just made no sense.
She also put Coronation milk in her coffee. That was lovely tbf.

lilyfire · 29/07/2019 17:52

I was brought up on corned beef hash with rice and am not Caribbean heritage. Cooked rice stir fried with corned beef cubes, peas and tinned sweet corn. Flavour with Worcestershire sauce and ketchup. It’s really good.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2019 17:55

I think to be honest all corned beef is exactly the same. I think it is made in bulk in Argentina and Brazil mostly and then packed in various branded tins.

I once compared Tesco normal brand and Tesco value, and the ingredients and nutritional content was exactly the same so I bought the value and it was exactly how I expected corned beef to taste. We've also had it from Aldi, Princes and John West and they all seem the same to me.

I did laugh in Waitrose this morning as their fresh sliced corned beef, which looks exactly the same as canned corned beef was priced at £3-3.50 per packet. OK, it is made from British beef, but is about 5-8 x the price on a per kilo basis.

MunchMunch · 29/07/2019 17:58

Either slice or cut the potatoes into quarters, chop the corned beef any which way, chuck in a dish. Add gravy granules and pour on cold water until it cover potatoes and corned beef, stick in oven for about 90 mins. Take out, add more gravy granules/water until preferred consistency. Chuck in a tin of peas and carrots (drained). Then either add dumplings and cook until dumplings are done or serve with Yorkshire puddings or warm mini baguettes and lurpak.

Dogdogcat · 29/07/2019 17:59

Cubed potatoes, no beans or cheese! I like an egg on top and a bit of corn in it.

HMArsey · 29/07/2019 18:02

Tea cakes, muffins, crumpets all seem to mean different things in this country.

Of course they're different things! I'm aghast and appalled.

Paraballa · 29/07/2019 18:18

Make mash. Mash in corned beef. Add onions if you want. Brown in oven. Serve with cabbage or green beans.

jadeyfly · 29/07/2019 18:20

Fry onions corned beef and beans off together, pop in a dish and to with mash potato and grated cheese. Bake until cheese is browned

ChihuahuaMummy1 · 29/07/2019 18:21

RodGallowglass · 29/07/2019 18:22

Who cares how the spuds are done WHERE'S THE BLOODY WORCESTER SAUCE!!

And breathe.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 29/07/2019 18:27

No no no no no!

The only corned beef hash worth eating is made on a single burner camping stove in one pan, and scoffed while admiring the Scottish Highlands and dodging the Scottish midgies.

Heat tinned peas with extra water
Tip water from peas into instant mash (the mash has to be green, it's the law)
Roughly chop corned beef by stirring it in the tin with a spork - any bits that fall out, blow the heather, midges and grouse poo off and bung it back in.
Stir corned beef and peas into green mash.
Eat.
