Corned Beef Hash Controversy

Scripto · 28/07/2019 17:45

H and I are discussing the way to make this. He’s waving a masher around and is obviously wrong.

  1. Parboil cubed pots.
  2. Fry onions
  3. Add pots to onions
  4. Brown a bit
  5. Chuck in oven with cheese on top
  6. Eat with baked beans and a fried egg.

He’s also suggesting green stuff which is so wrong I may have to kill him.

In Scotland we have stovies which are a similarly contested dish.
Folk from different areas make it in different ways.

I'm an East coaster so I made it with corned beef, tatties and beef dripping.

My west coast friends make it with sausage and tatties.

Someone on here recommended lamb from the butcher for stovies which made me Shock

I wonder if this is similar?

I mash for corned beef hash and fry it in patties like my Grannie did.

In every country I have ever lived in or visited there are dishes which vary regionally, it's no big deal! Tea cakes, muffins, crumpets all seem to mean different things in this country.
People on here have too much time on their hands if this is all they worry about!

InTheHeatofLisbon · 28/07/2019 18:16

Oatcakes in the north of England aren't what I'd describe as an oatcake. Much like what I'd call an oatcake wouldn't be to a northerner.

cccameron · 28/07/2019 18:16

I've had both versions but the nicest by far is with mashed potato so your H is right.

I think the cubed version is the American way of making it.

Noonemournsthewicked · 28/07/2019 18:16

Sorry yabvu.

  1. Boil potatoes.
  2. Add a splash of milk, cheese and butter if you're feeling fancy.
  3. Mash.
  4. Attempt to open cornbeed tin. Curse that we can put a man on the moon but can't store cornbeef in an easier tin.
  5. Break key.
  6. Attempt to open cornbeef tin with tin opener.
  7. Prise open the tin with a butter knife. Carefully dragging out the cornbeef.
  8. Mash it all together.
  9. Stick brown sauce on top.
10. Realiae making it is like childbirth. Absolute pain in the arse but so lovely you'd do it all again.
ghostyslovesheets · 28/07/2019 18:18

mash spuds and beef together - fry until golden - serve with beans

x2boys · 28/07/2019 18:19

That's should be eggs with cornbeef hashShock

Batsypatsy · 28/07/2019 18:20

Definitely cubed potatoes, corned beef, stick, onions, Worcestershire sauce, no cheese!

Queenioqueenio · 28/07/2019 18:20

Cheese on corned beef hash?!? Are you mad?
YABVU - the only real way to eat this is to ditch the corned beef and cheese, and make it with real stewing beef, and cook it for 6 hours. Until it’s a mush.
The only accompaniments it needs are beetroot, HP sauce and a slice of white bread.
That’ll stick to yer ribs lass, as my grandma would say.

MissDai5y · 28/07/2019 18:21

Where's the baked beans and Worcestershire sauce?

Fry onion, add corned beef, a can of baked beans, generous with the Worcestershire sauce Then top with mash and cheese then in the oven for a bit to brown.

x2boys · 28/07/2019 18:21

@Noonemournesthewicked😂😂

Jengnr · 28/07/2019 18:23

Potato, carrots, onions. Cook in stock. Add corned beef. Serve with red cabbage.

Teacakeandalatte · 28/07/2019 18:23

Mashed or cubes is ok but don't ruin it with that stinky fried egg, yuk.

MadamWaffle · 28/07/2019 18:24

DO NOT MASH FOR HASH!!!

fernandoanddenise · 28/07/2019 18:24

Cheese!?!? No way mate

x2boys · 28/07/2019 18:25

But you did forget the bit where you cut your finger on the blasted tin,@Noonemournesthewicked!

Hotterthanahotthing · 28/07/2019 18:27

Jengner, this is the version my mum makes, cooked until the corned beef is nearly falling apart.
We didn't have red cabbage though, just fresh bread.

Hotterthanahotthing · 28/07/2019 18:28

This is the kind of food Henderson's relish was make for,!

Andysbestadventure · 28/07/2019 18:28

Hash should be mashed. Heathen.

Firsttimekittenowner · 28/07/2019 18:30

I've only ever seen it done like this - mashed potato, butter and a bit of milk then add the corned beef and mash it more. Served with beetroot

bobstersmum · 28/07/2019 18:31

The way we make it here hasn't been mentioned I don't think! It's cubed potatoes, diced onions and sliced carrots, (peas optional) boiled slowly in water, diced corned beef added towards the end then tiny dash of gravy granules to thicken. So it's more of a corned beef soup /stew, but it's bloody good! Although I like the idea of it being crisped up in a pan!

LoobyLou1976 · 28/07/2019 18:31

I'm from Edinburgh, we make 'stovies' with mashed potatoes (lots of butter and milk), some onions fried off in a little butter, mixed in with the mashed potatoes, then add a can of corned beef. Mix well.
Serve with beans if desired. Brown sauce optional.

Making stovies with sausage is wrong !!!!! Haha.

FiddlesticksAkimbo · 28/07/2019 18:33
  1. Remove corned beef from tin.
  1. Offer corned beef to dog in the hope that dog has low standards
  1. Recycle tin
  1. Make something nice for dinner
CycleWoman · 28/07/2019 18:34

@JamOnTheCarpet

Hash requires mash

This will be my new mantra 😂

Marmite27 · 28/07/2019 18:37

Jenga has it. We usually have it with Yorkshire puddings.
