Corned Beef Hash Controversy

H and I are discussing the way to make this. He’s waving a masher around and is obviously wrong.

  1. Parboil cubed pots.
  2. Fry onions
  3. Add pots to onions
  4. Brown a bit
  5. Chuck in oven with cheese on top
  6. Eat with baked beans and a fried egg.

He’s also suggesting green stuff which is so wrong I may have to kill him.

I've only ever made it with mash but I've seen it made with cubed potatoes too. I think it's a regional thing.

Noonemournsthewicked · 28/07/2019 20:55

I'm really questioning whether I put cheese in it now. Definitely milk and a bit of butter for the mash.
Maybe it's cheese sauce I'm thinking of with the grated cheese.

Have to make it and find out!

QuantamBaby · 28/07/2019 20:58

My DH makes it with fried onions, cubes potatoes and chopped corned beef all sizzled together so they are nice and hot and soft and crispy... and the totally ruins it by pouring cheese sauce all over it....

Drives me insane - I have to scoop my portion out of the pan while he isn't looking before he can dump cheese sauce on everything...

Nanna50 · 28/07/2019 21:00

Is it not corned beef pie if it’s mashed?

Mine is sliced potato in the pan with onions, seasoning then corned beef and tossed until it’s brown, an egg is optional, ketchup is not Smile

MulticolourMophead · 29/07/2019 15:32

I can't stand baked beans.

Loyaultemelie · 29/07/2019 15:38

Mashed potato butter, salt grated cheese. Corned beef (I'm yet to work our the veggie replacement for this sadly so can't have it any more.) fry onions and kale . * A nice crusty loaf too

Coralfish · 29/07/2019 15:42

Trigger warning: controversial opinions follow.

I used cubed potatoes in any hash except hash browns, and even then I use grated potatoes, never mashed. Mashed potatoes are mash, not hash. Grin
I do mine in the actifry.
I add the baked beans to the hash at the end, rather than serving separately.
It has to have a fried egg on top.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 29/07/2019 15:56

I’ve never had corned beef hash. I don’t like the sound of it but maybe I’m missing out?

Also corned beef with beans is that ok?

Sorry added nothing to the thread I’m just pondering if I now need to make this

Oysterbabe · 29/07/2019 15:59

I'm team mash. I want to make this but husband thinks corned beef is too much like cat food.

BoreOfWhabylon · 29/07/2019 15:59

Mash potatoes with milk, butter and white pepper. Add a chopped raw onion and corned beef. Stir around until CB and onion evenly distributed throughout.

Dollop on plate, add knob of butter and serve with buttered white bread and brown sauce.

A flatmate of mine made 'corned beef hash' once. I was looking forward to it. It was a horrible sloppy stew type dish. Never been more disappointed.

5foot5 · 29/07/2019 16:01

TBH mashed or cubed - not a big deal IMO.
BUT you are both wrong with adding wither greens or cheese and it should really have an egg on top

5foot5 · 29/07/2019 16:02

^either not wither

LoafofSellotape · 29/07/2019 16:02

My recipe is more of a stew that you have with crusty bread. Yum!

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 29/07/2019 16:04

Off topic but corn beef Envy vile

TinyTickler · 29/07/2019 16:05

Fence sitter here too - I add cubed potatoes but then mush about half of them into the hash once cooked.

I also add diced carrots and celery, and some mixed herbs and chicken stock. Fancy, no?

Whycantistaymotivated · 29/07/2019 16:06

Egg???

Corned Beef Hash, with mash no beans and no egg!

Leakinglikeacolander · 29/07/2019 16:09

Corned beef hash virgin here, more confused than ever.

DoubleNegativePanda · 29/07/2019 16:11

Mashed potato is mash, not hash.

Cubedpotato is home fries.

Grated potato is hash.

The end.

Howdoyousleep · 29/07/2019 16:12

I don’t mash unless it’s already mashed. Onions and carrots are good with baked beans on the side
And white bread and butter.

MrsTommyBanks · 29/07/2019 16:12

I used to know someone who used rice instead of potatoes. RICE ffs.
I'm with team cubed for what it's worth.

Howdoyousleep · 29/07/2019 16:13

It’s less sloppy with cubed fried potatoes.

TheDogIsMyFave · 29/07/2019 16:13

It should only be made with mash - and served with ketchup. Them's the rules.

SodOffNoddy · 29/07/2019 16:22

@ChardonnaysPrettySister. I Want to know what boinging pots are 😂😂

Chill corned beef in fridge, fry off onions, grate corned beef into mash, mix together with onions and a few splashes of Henderson relish. Fry until crispy, place inside buttered bread and scoff the lot 😋

MeganChips · 29/07/2019 16:22

Cubed potatoes, onions and carrots. Cook in beef stock until the potatoes are starting to fall apart, add corned beef chucks right at the end. Serve with bread and ketchup if you’re DH!

DM makes hers in layers like a casserole with gravy, corned beef and onions.

I like it however it’s made!

nokidshere · 29/07/2019 16:25

Doesn't matter how you make it it still looks like dog food - yuk
