What are your ideas to cool the room down to get some sleep? We have pedestal fans they are not helping much.

It’s soo fcuking hot!!

Enjoy it, think about the freezing cold winter nights.
I'll probably sleep naked with only part of me under a 4.5 tog duvet. I seem to manage to have my legs and feet and my body above the waist uncovered but for some strange reason don't like no covers.
When I lived in the Middle East we'd have sheet over us, no duvet just a sheet. It seems better with a sheet than nothing for some reason.
I remember a few nights in Cairo when the minimum temperature was 34 degrees.

aposterhasnoname · 23/07/2019 19:55

Open the window, nice cool shower then flop on top of the covers and enjoy, I love hot nights.

bobstersmum · 23/07/2019 19:57

We are on holiday in a caravan and if anyone has any tips to cool down I will be forever grateful! It's like an oven, trying to get the kids to sleep is impossible.

first thing is to try to not get the house too hot in the first place!

close all windows and blinds/curtains on the sunny side.
open the windows on the shadowy side only if it's cooler outside than in.
if you have a loft hatch, open it so the hot air can escape upwards.

I have set my alarm clock to 5am to open all windows wide to catch as much cold air as possible before the sun comes up.

ConorMcGregorsChin · 23/07/2019 20:00

Been swimming in a cool pool for couple hours. Got fan on. Got windows open. Just hoping there will be no hatching of flying ants overnight. Local radio suggested putting bedding in freezer a couple of hrs before bed. My freezer is full of food and even if it wasn't, I wouldn't be squishing my bedding in there...
Oh and bottle of cold water will be taken to bed. I still won't sleep. Like I didn't last night. Just wanted to sleep in the garden but it's full of buffering spiders!

Dodie66 · 23/07/2019 20:01

Shut all doors and windows and draw the curtains before the sun gets too hot. It was 37.5 here this afternoon. Indoors it was lovely and cool 25 degrees

speakout · 23/07/2019 20:01

It isn't too hot here- 26 degrees max today, so I am happy.

Sn0tnose · 23/07/2019 20:02

Curtains drawn during the day while we’re both at work. Leaving home at 6am, bucket loads of water and packets of baby wipes in the fridge, pyjamas in the fridge (in a plastic bag so they don’t get damp), those blue squidgy things that go in chill bags in the fridge all day and in the pillow case as soon as I get home, feet in a bucket of water, really tepid, verging on cold bath before bed, a tower fan each side of the bed, cold flannels on the back of the neck, cotton everything.

If it gets any hotter, I’m planning on emptying the fridge, climbing in and closing the door.

Dodie66 · 23/07/2019 20:03

Oooops didn’t finish. Then open all doors and windows late evening to let the cooler air I

orangeshoebox · 23/07/2019 20:03

bobster do you have a ceiling light? open that so hot air can escape.

how big is the caravan? can you put a wet towel/sheet on the roof?

water fight for dc before bedtime so they get tired and the wet cools them down. or just give up and let them stay up and take a midnight walk looking at the stars.

colouringinpro · 23/07/2019 20:03

YADNBU. I've struggled today (unusually for me). I'm OK if I'm eating an ice lolly, but there are limits!

Once in Greece I resorted to sleeping naked with a cold flannel on my chest - really did work!

ineedaknittedhat · 23/07/2019 20:03

We sleep outside in a canvas bell tent in the garden.

madcatladyforever · 23/07/2019 20:05

I'm not coping I dripped sweat all over my patients feet like a beast, Im too hot to live.

thelonggame · 23/07/2019 20:05

not tried it, but heard recommended wetting a sheet, wringing it out and sleep under that.
Don't think I could cope with it clinging to me though.

bobstersmum · 23/07/2019 20:10

@orangeshoebox it's a holiday caravan on a park by the sea, there isn't a window in the roof unfortunately! It's the little bedrooms that are so hot, the sun is still very hot at this time and shining right into kids rooms, it's so uncomfortable!

NaviSprite · 23/07/2019 20:10

Angrily. I do not do well in hot weather as I overheat quickly - my veins don’t rise to the surface as much as they should so find cooling down really difficult! On the plus side I rarely feel cold 😂

But my best suggestions are (some are probably repeats):

-Thick curtains closed on sunny side of house. Open on other side with windows open if there is a decent breeze.

-Cool shower before bed.

-If you’re as bad as me - a spray bottle of water to use in the night to cool down.

-Fill a hot water bottle about half way with ice to keep feet cool.

-If you get really irritated warm feet like I do, you can even try soaking them in a tub of cold water to regulate your temperature.

-Drink a warm drink, helps to balance your inner temperature to the warm outer temperature.

-Flannel with cold water to keep across forehead/eyes if you get headaches in hot weather.

I am most definitely a winter person. Good luck all 😁

lljkk · 23/07/2019 20:11

I sleep in wet clothes. Get my hair soaked, too.

YourBonesAreWet · 23/07/2019 20:12

I have soaked a huge T-shirt in cold water and put it on. It’s lovely after the first few seconds.

NaviSprite · 23/07/2019 20:12

Oh and if you’re really desperate, cool whatever you use as nightwear in the freezer - wont stay cold but helps me to drift off!

Singlenotsingle · 23/07/2019 20:14

I've ordered a couple of those cool gel pillow pads.

ethelfleda · 23/07/2019 20:16

I plan on praying to the sun god and eating a fuck ton of Haagen Dazs

Roll on autumn!

Celebelly · 23/07/2019 20:18

We have an aircon unit in baby's room. We have all spent a lot of time in there today! It's a cool 19 there but 25 in other rooms Sad

dementedma · 23/07/2019 20:19

I sat out in the garden after work drinking cold beer. It’s all good here

CloserIAm2Fine · 23/07/2019 20:21

When I lived in a top floor bedroom with afternoon sun and a tiny window the only way I could sleep in a heatwave was on top of my bed, putting a flat sheet or empty duvet cover through a quick cool wash in the washing machine and sleeping in it damp.

My current flat is ground floor and only gets the sun in the morning so although it’s very cold in winter, it’s a lovely comfortable temp in this weather!
