What are your ideas to cool the room down to get some sleep? We have pedestal fans they are not helping much.

It’s soo fcuking hot!!

Related to the above, I sunbathed in the garden at lunchtime yesterday (Kent, 32 degrees, lovely!) and wore a dampened bandana-type-thingy on my head. Bliss! I do this on holiday too and give no fucks if it looks odd.

motheroffourcats · 24/07/2019 10:20

Is it better to keep windows and curtains closed? Or better to open windows and keep curtains closed?

My workplace is a sweatbox in these rare heatwave days we're getting in UK currently.

One part of the buildng gets very very much hotter than the rest of the building due to a huge glass window that acts like a greenhouse. It is the reception part and can't leave door open as security risk and also too noisy from the traffic. today we are all going to make sure we stay hydrated and take breaks away from the hot part of the building. In my small office I have a portable air con box thing from last summer. It isn't great but it helps cool the air immedaitely around me so in my book that's a plus.

Boss has given us money to buy ice creams as well.

Night time is tricky though as the house does not have air con and I do attract the mosquitos a lot.

I might try a PP advice of sleeping on damp sheets or on a bath sheet.

Freeze a hot water bottle and sleep with it in the bed

MagentaRocks · 24/07/2019 10:45

I freeze a couple of hot water bottles too and I have a fan to cool me down. I have hot flushes so there really is no respite for me in this heat. We ordered a little pool the other day. Going to put it up today.

Just got back from a run and it was so hot. Struggled to get round my usual route. Won’t be doing much else today.

meow1989 · 24/07/2019 10:45

Ds13months slept in our room in a nappy in his travel cot last night as his room is a storey up and south facing. Was 30 degrees at 10pm.

Think today we will find an air conditioned soft play! Could play in paddling pool but sun so strong here already and even with factor 50 in I dint want him in it much (plus he will not wear a hat).

I hate hate hate this weather.

Aragog · 24/07/2019 11:01

Im just going to enjoy it as it is still quite unusual for us to get lovely warm weather!

Its good prep for my upcoming holiday where it will be warmer and stickier.

At night we have windows open to encourage the odd draught, and thick curtains closed. We have a fan which we have on full when we first go up to cool the room a little, but turn it off at night.

I get really to feet anyway so I always put them under really cold water before bed, and my wrists too. Seems to help cool my whole body down. Or I may enjoy a cool shower - but avoid hair as don't like to sleep with wet hair.

During the day - time inside and out; some windows open and enjoying it! Lots of cold drinks and ice lollies!

lubeybooby · 24/07/2019 12:26

fans - so many fans

also like sleeping damp or with a few damp flannels nearby (and the fan on at the foot of the bed) it's gorgeous

lmusic87 · 24/07/2019 13:37

I can't stand summer, I naturally feel hot most of the time anyway so this week is hell.

I've been having an ice bath before bed and freezing a cool gel pillow.

elprup · 24/07/2019 14:28

Only 1.5 more days of this and then it’s back to normal. 23C on Saturday and raining - bliss!

BlueSkiesLies · 24/07/2019 14:30

Just enjoy it. It’s nice.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/07/2019 14:34

We're turning into cave dwellers. Windows open and curtains closed so the bedroom doesn't get too hot, we only ever have a summer duvet and even that on the floor pretty soon.

Ated · 24/07/2019 15:18

I switched on my full size, wired in air conditioner, set at 18 degrees and I'm freezing if I get in front of it but it keeps the house cool all day and night.

maddening · 24/07/2019 16:52

1morerep, I am. In Cheshire and it is V. Hot - tomorrow is expected to be 32° here tomorrow with thunder in the afternoon /early eve?

EllebellyBeeblebrox · 24/07/2019 17:06

Wet flannels on me last night in bed, with the fan on me and cuddling an ice pack. Am 30weeks pregnant and feel like a sweaty fat mess. Tomorrow may finish me off

Cakeisbest · 24/07/2019 18:57

If you have longish hair, put it in low bunches to sleep in, so it’s cooler on your neck. I tried the chilled water hot-water bottles last night - lovely! One on my feet and one in small of the back. Cool shower before bed.

Chocolatedaim · 24/07/2019 18:59

Tonight is probably the last night it will be so warm, we are back to low 20s by Friday...
I will have a cold shower before bed, and will then sleep with damp flannel on my head.
Thankfully our bedroom doesn’t get the sun towards the end of the day so it’s usually fairly cool in there compared to the front of the house

omione · 24/07/2019 19:07

Have the blinds or curtains and the windows closed (from 10 a.m onwards if you are south facing) and the fan on, never ceases to amaze me when Brits put the fan on and OPEN the window.

Ated · 24/07/2019 19:23

Put your partner in the freezer for an hour.

ScreamingValenta · 24/07/2019 19:28

I almost considered bedding down at work tonight because the air-conditioning is lovely! Grin

MissConductUS · 24/07/2019 19:30

I switched on my full size, wired in air conditioner, set at 18 degrees and I'm freezing if I get in front of it but it keeps the house cool all day and night.

We have central air conditioning at home. The cold air comes out of the same vents in the floor as the warm air from the furnace in the winter. It's not cheap to install or operate but it is so lovely this time of year. It's also hard to sell a house where I am that doesn't have it, so that helps justify the expense.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/07/2019 20:05

The weather app on my phone shows 39 tomorrow.

It must be broken.

Crunchymum · 24/07/2019 20:52

39c

Fuck, where are you?

BBC is saying 38c for me (central London)

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 24/07/2019 21:26

London, I do hope it's wrong.

I barely survived today. Made it home in a crumpled sweaty stinky heap and DH was an angel waiting with a cold glass of wine.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/07/2019 21:29

Freeze a large bottle of water. Place in an empty washing up bowl. Place in front of fan and you have a homemade air con unit.
Old holiday rep tip.
