What are your ideas to cool the room down to get some sleep? We have pedestal fans they are not helping much.

It’s soo fcuking hot!!

Austria: if you google "bad +name of neighbourhood" the local public pool (they are in most neighbourhoods) will come up, and they are of a great quality overall. Public pools are called swimmbad, tend not to be laned on weekends (operate as splash parks). DH seconds Danube, apparently there is a sheep section and people section, watch for that or your DSs will get more than they bargained for! Grin.

FurrySlipperBoots · 23/07/2019 22:09

It's annoying because it's too hot for covers but without covers you are vulnerable to monsters.

@Oysterbabe

YES! What is it with these 'no covers' suggestions?! What's next, advice to keep the wardrobe door slightly open?!

EssentialHummus · 23/07/2019 22:10

Ooops, wrong thread!

Oneworld · 23/07/2019 22:11

I’m in London too. It’s very hot here upstairs. I sprayed some water on the bed and kicked the duvet out. I don’t even want to see the duvet. Got some flat sheets out instead.

Water sprayed on the bed + pedestal fan = heaven

You know those self cooling mats they have for dogs? Not just for dogs. Swear to god, they should market them to menopausal women.

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 23/07/2019 22:19

oysterbabe Funny!! 🤣
My tip; Dripping wet flannel by your bed. Wet your hair every now and then.
I also do this for the kids before bed and it helps them sleep...

Raylas · 23/07/2019 22:20

Strip naked, wet a sheet with cold water (wring it out so it's just damp), then lay naked with the sheet over you and the fan pointed at you. It's how I got through 3 nights in a windowless room in Delhi just before monsoon when it was 44c! It was like being in a hot car, I remember feeling a bit delirious and the sheet getting warm really quickly.

TSSDNCOP · 23/07/2019 22:24

Raylas OMG Delhi is fucking insane. I’ve also been in Greece when it hit the mid 40’s.

I bask in it here. Put off everything unless absolutely essential and embrace the Mediterranean in you!

ryanreynolds · 23/07/2019 22:36

Any tips for little babies? DS is 5 weeks and it's currently 28c in here! Have had curtains shut against sun until sun at the back of the house then open to let air in...he's sleeping soundly but am concerned he'll be too hot...he's just in a vest...unsure whether to strip him to nappy...?!

NCforthis2019 · 23/07/2019 22:38

not doing much - fan on i guess. Im used to hotter than this though so for me, this is cool.

Ihatesundays · 23/07/2019 22:42

I’ve been on Mumsnet for years and this is the most important thing anyone has ever written:

It's annoying because it's too hot for covers but without covers you are vulnerable to monsters.

Specifically vampires I find.

Also I have no advice as I am not coping, I’m too fucking hot and I am now covered in heat rash.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 23/07/2019 22:43

Hot water bottle in the freezer. You're welcome.

SamsMumsCateracts · 23/07/2019 22:44

I'm dreading the next few days, more so now that my fridge/freezer has died, or more accurately, was killed by DS leaving the door wide open this morning, just before we went out for the day! We are now facing three blisteringly hot days with no cold food, drinks, ice lollies etc. Such fun Angry

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 23/07/2019 22:45

I don’t know 😩 I work in community nursing so my uniform coupled with houses with heating on full pelt, I’ll be sweating from areas I didn’t know sweat existed 😂

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 23/07/2019 22:48

ihatesundays I shall henceforth be lying with no covers on as invitation for the vampire Lestat (Stuart Townsend, not Tom cruise 🤢)

kateandme · 23/07/2019 22:48

freez hot water bottles.
put bowl of ice in front of your fans.
freeze flannels then take it to bed to dab in the night.
wear big baggy t-shirt and boxers nothing else ever again!
sheet instead of duvet.for those like me who think the monsters will get us if at least some part of us ist covered.
suck ice.
freeze sqaush into ice cube holder for the kids,or you.grab a cupful and enjoy.

Ihatesundays · 23/07/2019 22:49

It’s that black and white nosfaratu chap that comes. The one with the long pointy teeth!

marblesgoing · 23/07/2019 22:51

My curtains and blinds are kept down during the day and then I open them and the window at night when we go to bed.

Must remember to open loft hatch to allow heat from upstairs to escape.

Have a ceiling fan In my room but to be honest it gets to a stage where it's like waking into a furnace so I lie under it in a loose vest and no duvet.

That keeps me cooler. The dc have their own fans in their rooms and sleep under just a sheet.

Fridge freezer had cold Walter filter and ice attached thank god as that comes in handy.

I walk round bare footed at night downstairs as the floors lovely and cool

Theimpossiblegirl · 23/07/2019 22:51

I'm tempted to sleep in the living room- it's the coolest room in the house.

jigsawpiece · 23/07/2019 22:51

If you have one, open your loft hatch. Hot air rises so some of it will migrate into the loft space.

buttertoasty · 23/07/2019 22:51

Cold shower at night and first thing in the morning, feeling clean against the sheets really helps

No duvet, just duvet cover (do this every summer and it makes changing the sheets super easy also)

Fan on full blast

Ice cold sparkling water

OldSiam · 23/07/2019 22:53

Spare a thought for us police officers wearing 2 stone of kit/stab vests and hat. I absolutely stink because the uniform is synthetic

kateandme · 23/07/2019 22:54

FurrySlipperBoots best post ever :D next they will be telling us to keep cool by hanging our feet over the side of the bed

Missangrypants · 23/07/2019 22:54

@Oysterbabe and @FurrySlipperBoots

You both made me laugh out loud. Grin

Good to know I'm not the only one thinking those things at my age!

kateandme · 23/07/2019 22:55

you can get those water bottles now too that has the suck to drink as usual but next to that a spray function! just seen them on amazon.wow.
