What are your ideas to cool the room down to get some sleep? We have pedestal fans they are not helping much.

It’s soo fcuking hot!!

You can buy small air con units really cheap.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 23/07/2019 20:27

I’m in London and the heat has triggered a nasty migraine. Had an insane aura and had to go to GP and get steroids and triptics I’ve never had before. Feel terrible. Any tips much appreciated.

Littlepond · 23/07/2019 20:34

I’m in a hotel with air con! Booked months ago but great timing. My room is so lovely and cool.

Oneworld · 23/07/2019 20:34

I HATE hot weather (grew up in a hot country) and absolutely love British winters. Can’t wait for this fcuking heat wave to pass.

I'm putting ice packs in front of ds1's fan, which seem to be helping. Silly sod refuses to shut his curtains when the sun shines in.

ScreamingValenta · 23/07/2019 20:39

My curtains have been closed all day to keep my bedroom cool.

MissConductUS · 23/07/2019 20:40

It was 40 in New York both days last weekend. Really awful out but air conditioning is much more common here.

Em3978 · 23/07/2019 20:41

I mostly just whinge and grump about it all. Sit by a fan and dream of snow. I love snow. I love jumpers and blankets.

I'm pale, I'm ginger. I'm not made for anything above 20deg Sad

shieldmaidenofrohan · 23/07/2019 20:42

I will be spending the heatwave in an air conditioned control room [smug]

Boysey45 · 23/07/2019 20:42

Its not that hot really, I've been abroad and its been miles hotter with heatwaves coming off the pavement at your feet. Just have plenty of drinks and wear light clothes and wear suncream if out in the sun.
Don't forget to give animals more water to drink as well.

WorraLiberty · 23/07/2019 20:44

Get a little squirty water bottle (the kind hairdressers use) and keep spraying yourself, especially while sitting in front of the fan.

Failing that, stick a towel under a cold tap, wring it out and place it on your body at night.

UniversalAunt · 23/07/2019 20:44

Sleep on a bath towel placed on top of your usual bedding.
Sleep with nowt on top.
Should you sweat & swelter in the night, the towel will absorb the sweat so you are not woken by damp sweaty sheets as they cool.
You’ll not stick to the towel as you toss & turn in the night.

If the temperature drops in the night, you’ll pull the towel over you in your sleep.

Try a separate towel on your pillow if you sweat a lot on your head.
Again, you won’t wake up wet & sweaty as the towel absorbs it all.

Easier to wash/put out clean dry towels than strip all the linens off the bed.

Works with menopausal & fevered night sweats.

Ragwort · 23/07/2019 20:45

Cool shower before bed, just a sheet & obviously not sharing bed with DH Grin. The joys of separate bedrooms.

Oysterbabe · 23/07/2019 20:45

It's annoying because it's too hot for covers but without covers you are vulnerable to monsters.

MothralovesGojira · 23/07/2019 20:46

I'm putting ice cubes in my cat's water bowl every few hours to cool the water down.

..... the water is for my cat not me.

Tomorrow if it's really hot then I'll put small ice cubes in a bowl for him too and he'll happily lick at them to keep cool. Meanwhile I'll just grin and bear the heat in a darkened room and get up every hour or so to top up the cat's water bowl......I know my place!

SariaSun · 23/07/2019 20:47

In my old house I’d sleep downstairs because upstairs was a bloody sauna no matter what we did.

One sheet on sofa, another on top, all windows open and plenty of cold water got me through.

Sandsnake · 23/07/2019 20:48

I plan to be pregnant and commute into central London each day. I think that is anti-advice!Grin

Lizzielocket · 23/07/2019 20:48

I’m planning on spending the heatwave in the garden, DC have a massive pool that they show no interest in so it’s all mine.
It’s never too hot for me, I thrive in it. I hibernate in the cold.

wonkylegs · 23/07/2019 20:49

We're in southern France at the moment and today has been 38 with no breeze, nighttime temps are about 19. It's 9.45pm atm and it's still 29 but much much more pleasant
Tomorrow is forecast as 37 and Thursday 39
It's stifling - thankfully it's a holiday so we've had the kids in the pool first thing and late afternoon and not done much in the middle. Hard with a 3yo who doesn't understand why he can't go out in the all day

ReanimatedSGB · 23/07/2019 20:50

I have heard that soaking either the top sheet or your nightwear in cold water can help. Our house, perhaps because of the aspect and the madly overgrown garden, doesn't get too bad...

Catquest1 · 23/07/2019 20:50

Someone told me this week to put bottles of water in the freezer to freeze then place in front of a fan for an air con effect.

Cant try it myself as we are away and have no fan but welcome any feedback if someone tries it

Betty777 · 23/07/2019 20:50

position fans near a window to blow fresh air inside, not just circulate the existing air

take your duvet off and just use a sheet

wet the top sheet sheet and ring it out so it's damp and lay it on top of you when you go to bed. If you feel that's too wet, use thinner instead (eg a light sarong) as that will dry faster

wet your wrists, elbows, hair at the crown and temples

and as PP said, shut the curtains before you leave in the morning to keep the sun out.

(I'm from a hot country and I find it a bit bizarre that people don't do these things automatically! but I'm prob BU)

MamaLazarou · 23/07/2019 20:52

I have never related to a Mumsnet post more.

thedayofthethreeMagnums · 23/07/2019 20:54

Leave all windows opened at night

Start closing windows around 9am and draw curtains on sunny side.
Close curtains following the sun.
Open the windows again when it's cooling down.

Wear summer clothes, drink loads of water and eat salad.

Gorgeous weather, love it. We are lucky it does cool down at night! I haven't even got my fans out of the loft yet, always need duvet early morning when it gets chilly.

Love this post!

I plan on grumbling. A lot.
