What are your ideas to cool the room down to get some sleep? We have pedestal fans they are not helping much.

It’s soo fcuking hot!!

There was a recent thread on here saying that ceiling fans were naff.

We had them installed in our bedrooms several years ago and I don't care whether they are naff or not, we are lovely and cool at night.

My OH also has a hot water bottle filled with very cold water and he is snoring away happily.

Psychologika · 23/07/2019 22:57

Honestly? 3 years ago I bought a mobile air conditioner from b+q. It was about £300, but the difference it's made to the 3 or 4 weeks per year where sleeping is impossible (living in a South London Flat , anyhow!) has been hugely worth it.

Missangrypants · 23/07/2019 22:57

@Ceresilannisterinthesnow

Neither one. It has to be the character as played by Brad Pitt. Wouldn't mind him nibbling my neck!

justasking111 · 23/07/2019 23:00

going to have a tepid shower now, then climb into bed damp, no towel needed tonight.

Hotterthanahotthing · 23/07/2019 23:02

In the midlands.I work in a hospital and it got hotter as the day went on but we were protected from the humidity.
Going home at 6pm it clouded over and rained a little.
At home windows open front and back to allow a through draught. The curtain pole over the south facing french windows has broken it it was still cooler inside than out.
Si I know those in hotter areashate it but I'm hoping for some clear blue skies when I'm not working but lightning storms forecast tonight.
I hope it doesn't break before I get to enjoy it.
I did put socks in the fridge to cool my feet down when I got home tonight, will do it tommorrow too.

Time40 · 23/07/2019 23:02

All these people saying put ice or iced water in front of a fan ... it doesn't work. It does absolutely nothing whatsoever.

Or was I doing it wrong when I tried it?

Missangrypants · 23/07/2019 23:08

@kateandme

Yes you have to be careful. I find myself waking up sometimes with horror to find I've let my feet dangle over the edge. I have to yank them back in asap just in case!

DrCoconut · 23/07/2019 23:08

Its been lovely today, about 25 degrees where we were. If it gets a bit warm at night I have a fan on my bedside drawers. Our house is difficult to heat so we rarely have problems in summer. It's not so good in winter when the heating needs to be on almost 24/7.

minipie · 23/07/2019 23:16

I’ve given the DC freezer blocks (the kind you put in a picnic bag) wrapped in pillowcases to cuddle. Only way they could get to sleep

Goingonagondola · 23/07/2019 23:26

I go to work - lovely and cool there with the aircon. Though it did mean that I really had no idea how hot it was outside (apart from 'knowing' on paper) and when I stepped out the door I actually felt quite stunned for a minute. I felt like I'd stepped into an oven, my eyes started watering and I felt slightly disorientated! Then I was fine but the sudden change was a shock.

colouringinpro · 23/07/2019 23:28

I've struggled today. Don't know what to do with dcs 11 and 14 tomorrow and Thur. Sad

sweetkitty · 23/07/2019 23:29

It’s only been 26 degrees here today which is lovely just right, pool out but still a breeze and not stifling.

It’s 24 degrees just now which is unheard of at night in Scotland, I’ve had to put a leg out my duvet!

I did live in a flat in Central London for a good few years and travelling in temperatures of 30+ is awful then getting to work and the air cons so high you’ve got goose pimples. Slept with only the duvet cover and fan on for months.

WouldYouLikeAnOmlette · 23/07/2019 23:30

Sleep with a flat sheet on top of me.

Hot water bottle- no cover but really cold water. Sleep with it on your feet.

Stop panicking and get used to it, same way you do on holiday.

Have cool shower before bed

PotterHead1985 · 23/07/2019 23:31

My curtain and blinds been closed all day. I am lying here in an OVEN. I can't open my window more than the latch as I am in the front room of a bungalow facing a main road with no garden.

I'm lying in my skivvies contemplating my death and dripping.

PotterHead1985 · 23/07/2019 23:31

Also monsters!! Yes Grin

Justaboy · 23/07/2019 23:32

Look on the bright side!, its supposed to piss with Rain all day Saturday!

bumblingbovine49 · 23/07/2019 23:32

I have said this before. The way to keep cool on a hot day before bed is to have a really hot shower as hot as you can stand . That way when you get out, the air feels relatively cool.l.and you don't start sweating again straight away. If you have a cool showeryou are sweating again within minutes of stepping out.

My niece who lives In a city with regular summer temps of 40deg and with no air con in her flat gave me the tip. I also lie on top of the bed with the fan on. It does feel cooler with it on

glueandstick · 23/07/2019 23:33

I sat in front of the fridge for a few mins earlier. Was bliss.

RB68 · 23/07/2019 23:36

If you have fans a bowl of ice water in front - and set up so spills won't touch electrics, cold flannel on face chest or back of neck, proper cotton sheets only on bed. Also cold foot bath before bed or cool shower.

Find a cool area for kids to fall asleep before moving them to beds even if it is outside.

PotterHead1985 · 23/07/2019 23:36

Do you think i need all the food in my chest freezer?? HmmConfusedHmm

WhatWouldChristineCagneyDo · 23/07/2019 23:38

I think I've cracked it. Take your knickers off and straddle the electric fan whilst drinking a pint of shandy.

Yes I did this, and shall do it again.

DeadDoorpost · 23/07/2019 23:43

33 weeks pregnant and I don't plan on coping. Fully expecting to end up in the hospital unable to cope. Suffering from supreme is bad enough but not being able to st or drink properly without feeling sick in the weather...

Crunchymum · 23/07/2019 23:46

This was last summer.

Aibu to ask how you all plan to cope with the heat on the next few days?
Crunchymum · 23/07/2019 23:47

Sorry. Posted too soon.

London, last summer.

AdoraBell · 23/07/2019 23:51

I’ll be okay in work tomorrow due to air conditioning, but I have no choice but to leave the dogs at home. Luckily I’m only working part time.

Once I’m home I’ll open all the windows, again luckily we have windows front, back and at the side of the house so any breeze goes through the house.
