What are your ideas to cool the room down to get some sleep? We have pedestal fans they are not helping much.

Just as I would on any other day. It doesn't bother me in the slightest 🤷‍♀️

Italiangreyhound · 23/07/2019 23:53

How do I plan to cope with the heat...Haagen Dazs Salted Caramel Ice Cream Bars 3X80ml.

llangennith · 23/07/2019 23:53

Thunder lightning and rain here in S Wales. Lots of lightning! Hoping it'll clear the humidity of the last few days.
I'd love to be one of those people who thrive in this weather but I'm not. I'm meant for temperate weather.

Justaboy · 23/07/2019 23:57

OooH! look lightning around the south coast and wales!

What we have done is fly from France (where we live is currently 40 degrees by the afternoon) to Scotland, where it is a mild and lovely 26 degrees.

Tips:

Shut all windows / shutters as soon as the sun comes shining in. Darkness is good. Breezes are bad.

Hotties half filled with water and frozen for bedtime.

Cool bath for a good long while.

Wet hair, damp pjs / sheet / towel lying over you, and a fan will make you cool enough to sleep.

Kahlua4me · 23/07/2019 23:59

Kept all windows, doors and curtains closed during the day and then opened them all once dark so the house is nice and cool now. Lying on the bed with just a sheet over me.

Dh and dd are sleeping in the lounge as dd is sure it’s cooler down there. Not sure it is really but saves her tidying her bedroom!

GabsAlot · 24/07/2019 00:07

Some of us cant enjoy for those pp-i sweat profusely nothing stops it nothing helpsfeel light headed and/or headachey its just not fun like i always say in the winter you can at least wear layers

TheresSummatUnderThatBed · 24/07/2019 00:36

@ryanreynolds he's sleeping soundly but am concerned he'll be too hot...he's just in a vest...unsure whether to strip him to nappy...?!

My eldest was born in 2002 and that summer was really hot - there we were having carefully noted all the instructions about not having the room at more than 19 degrees C and the thermometer was showing 28 degrees! He was definitely in just a nappy some of the time - with a sheet in the Moses basket ready to be draped over him lightly sometimes - that seemed cooler than having him in a vest as it was looser - sort of a halfway house between a vest and nothing but the nappy.

Amazing thunderstorm in Manchester just finished. Woke me and my DH up in separate rooms but both children slept through it. I've had to run around closing windows as rain was coming in!
I remember 2002 as well, lots of wrists under cold running water that summer as in an non-air-conditioned office. Was (very) pregnant last summer and that was Shock
Baby and I have nicked DH's Dyson fan, it's lovely. Cold water in an old washing up bowl for feet did the job last year so that's one to bring out!

managedmis · 24/07/2019 03:33

I think I've cracked it. Take your knickers off and straddle the electric fan whilst drinking a pint of shandy.

I use a mini (USB fan on my bedside table which blows cooler air onto my face. Also, a big fan at the bottom of the bed (raised up a little) puts air through the room. Mix this with a combination of sleep aid tablets and ear plugs to block out the sound of the fan and I've been getting a good night's sleep. I hate this time of year - much prefer the spring and autumn!

PotterHead1985 · 24/07/2019 06:36

Hmm. Where did I put my USB fan from work 🧐🤔

IgotApositive · 24/07/2019 06:39

😒 its thunder and lightning here! Wish we had sun

ifigoup · 24/07/2019 06:44

If you have a loft, open up the loft hatch so the hot air can rise up into the roof space. It makes a difference.

Through breeze at night is crucial: two windows open in a room where possible, or windows on opposite sides of house with intermediate doors open.

Sleep under a damp sheet.

I commute into central London and work in an office with no air con. It’s going to be 37C tomorrow and then a much more bearable 27C on Friday apparently. I’m just praying for Friday to come.

Cotonshaded · 24/07/2019 06:50

We are driving through France tomorrow to our holiday - it's 41C where we are going and no air con 😱...got lots of frozen water bottles for the car and cooling mat and towel for the doggy. Luckily my car has really effective aircon but not looking forward to getting out of it into the heat!

AlbertWinestein · 24/07/2019 06:50

Google the MIT made air con fan thing. Get one of those.

elprup · 24/07/2019 06:52

London forecast... only two more days of it thank god!

Outlook for Friday to Sunday
Friday will be much cooler with sunny spells and a risk of some showers. Low pressure to the east could turn things less settled on Saturday, with the chance of some heavy and prolonged rain or showers. Remaining rather unsettled with the chance of some further heavy rainfall moving in from the south.

elprup · 24/07/2019 06:55

I did live in a flat in Central London for a good few years and travelling in temperatures of 30+ is awful then getting to work and the air cons so high you’ve got goose pimples.

Try travelling in temperatures of 30+ then getting to work with NO aircon!

EggysMom · 24/07/2019 07:12

DH: "We probably won't sleep tonight, it'll be too hot.

I'm wakened at 2:15 by thunderstorms, heavy rain, so I dash round the house to close the wide open windows. Just under an hour later, having listened to the storms end, I go round the bedrooms again to re-open those windows. When I climb back into bed, I find DH still snoring, having wrapped himself in the 10-tog quilt!

7:30 this morning I expect DH to say "I didn't sleep a wink, it was too hot, I was on top of the covers" ... Er, you did sleep and you were under the quilt!

SheChoseDown · 24/07/2019 07:46

It's 38 degrees at night here. It's really unpleasant. There is no air con in our mobile home. No breeze. Its dangerous.
Today will be 40 degrees again. I could cry

thedayofthethreeMagnums · 24/07/2019 08:22

Cotonshaded
I would drive at night, or VERY early morning. Many parts of France are still on orange alert - the UK is hot, but the continent does experience a real heatwave!

Cotonshaded · 24/07/2019 08:34

ThedayofthethreeMagnums, yes good idea. We are getting the Eurotunnel first thing so hopefully we can be straight on our way..am praying there is no problem in the tunnel with the aircon like last year too! I can't believe how hot it is going to be there - we're staying in the Haut Rhine as I thought it would be cooler than the Vendée etc but not a chance! They are not really set up there for the heat (much like the UK!)

justasking111 · 24/07/2019 08:39

Tepid shower cotton nightie put over wet body made it more bearable last night I slept then

wink1970 · 24/07/2019 09:48

I remember Sarah Kennedy on Radio 2 (which ages me!) suggesting sleeping on a damp towel. It works; the towel dries from the heat from your body so no soggy bed, and keeps you cool all night.
