AIBU to be glad the heat wave hasn’t reached the UK

I am so glad it’s not 37c here as it is in Europe. I love this weather, 22c is enough for me. My husbands moaning we haven’t had a summer, I love this weather, I can sleep at night, I can go to work without getting all sweaty, I can walk my dogs without worrying of them dying of heat stroke. Anyone else like this weather?

I'm Scottish and anything above the high teens counts as a heatwave for me!

I can't imagine how awful it must be to experience temperatures in the 40s. Hottest I've ever been was 36c, in Australia, and I seriously thought I was going to die.

MimosasAllRound · 26/06/2019 20:54

For those of us in Europe, we're a lot more equipped to handle the heat than you are in the UK. Almost every house and building here has air conditioning, and businesses are set up to avoid people being out in the middle of the day when it's hottest.

The heat gradually climbs so you acclimatise bit by bit. 40 degrees isn't awful, it's bearable although not ideal.

buttermilkwaffles · 26/06/2019 20:55

I agree, 22, 23 is perfect and as temperature readings are always taken in the shade it will feel much warmer than that in the sun anyway.

Being in 37c is very unpleasant, for me anyway, no pleasure in being hot, sweaty and feeling knackered from the heat, hard to sleep at night, public transport like a sauna, etc..

Novia · 26/06/2019 20:56

I'm in Spain, it's bloody hot outside, but the houses are actually built to minimise the heat and have good airflow. Even without aircon it's bearable. You don't want to be out in the middle of the day, there's a reason people go for a siesta then!

Biancadelrioisback · 26/06/2019 20:57

Yikes, I'm in shorts and a vest top at 18 degrees (North East). At 40 I'd have to strip back to skeleton

CarolDanvers · 26/06/2019 20:58

Warm but cool breeze her in London today. Perfect weather for me. I hate anything over 24. My heart literally sinks when I check the forecast and it's any hotter than that.

Seeingadistance · 26/06/2019 20:58

@MimosasAllRound

I appreciate that high temperatures won't be as difficult for those who are accustomed to them, but extremes of temperatures are still dangerous, particularly for those who are already frail or vulnerable.

What were the temperatures in France that year in August, when there were many heat-related deaths?

sunshinesupermum · 26/06/2019 20:59

Currently melting in France - I am a pool of grease. Looking forward to being back in the 'cool' UK on Saturday

HarrysOwl · 26/06/2019 20:59

When I got married it was above 40 degrees. And I was wearing jeans.

Sob.

Nothing will ever be as hot as that.

buttermilkwaffles · 26/06/2019 20:59

Almost every house and building here has air conditioning Not in France and especially not in the North of the country. I doubt they do in Belgium, Netherlands and Northern Germany either...

Only places I have been where most places had it is Southern Spain and Croatia.

ShitAtScarbble · 26/06/2019 20:59

Mid 30s is bearable if it's a dry heat - if it's humid like it has been recently it's pure hell.
Also - as said above - we're just not set up for it.

GiantKitten · 26/06/2019 21:00

I am loving this weather - I'm in Lancs, it was about 20 today, mainly sunny, bit of a breeze, bloody perfect. Smile

I'm good at managing the house in hot weather (if nobody interferes Angry) - windows CLOSED ALL DAY, curtains drawn on sunny side, half a dozen tower fans going 24/7.

Hoping we will also avoid the hot plume on Saturday...

Peitho · 26/06/2019 21:01

Mid-20s is ideal for me. You can feel the warmth on your skin but you don't end up a floppy and sweaty mess going about your day to day activities. High 20s is okay if I'm doing nothing more than lounging about. I can't even imagine anything over 35.

sunshinesupermum · 26/06/2019 21:01

Mimosa - The French haven't heard of air con. I don't know anyone who has it here. They don't seem to have learnt much since the heatwave in 2003 when thousands of people died.

Peitho · 26/06/2019 21:02

And oh yeah, dry heat so much more pleasant.

transformandriseup · 26/06/2019 21:02

22 degrees in Cornwall is a heatwave.

It’s too hot for my baby though so I’m missing out on a lot of the sun at the moment

ReganSomerset · 26/06/2019 21:02

Yanbu.

Ginger1982 · 26/06/2019 21:03

Last summer in Glasgow it hit 31. I screenshotted my iPhone weather for posterity. It was horrendous!!

Owlbert · 26/06/2019 21:04

I love the heat! I wish it was mid 20s upwards everyday with the odd thiunderstorm and sone overnight rain! Even heavily pregnant last summer I never complained about the heat.

Sandybval · 26/06/2019 21:04

It's only June and he is moaning we haven't had a summer! Also YANBU, I like dry weather, but not scorching muggy weather.

TheInebriati · 26/06/2019 21:04

Yanbu, Its 17 degrees here and I'm sat in a tshirt with no socks on, and tonight I'll sleep with the window open.

Gardenersnaptime · 26/06/2019 21:05

I guess it’s fairly mild here in the Midlands but I feel like I haven’t seen blue sky for weeks and have barely made it out of jeans and hoodie.
I loved last summer’s heatwave

givememarmite · 26/06/2019 21:05

I'm in Germany and it went up to 38 degrees today, felt a lot hotter outside tbh! Although most offices, shops etc have air con most houses certainly don't...my daughter's bedroom was 32 degrees at 9pm. Have moved her into the spare room til it cools down a bit.

Lots of homes have outside shutters though (we don't have them downstairs unfortunately) so they are kept closed all day and open windows wide v early and late at night to let some cooler air in. As much as I love the sun this is too much for me!

isthatapugunicorn · 26/06/2019 21:06

YANBU - we’d literally melt! We’re not set up for heatwaves...

Al203 · 26/06/2019 21:06

For those of us in Europe, we're a lot more equipped to handle the heat than you are in the UK. Almost every house and building here has air conditioning

And there you have it. The self-perpetuating production of CO2 emissions in order to power a device to cool us down. Why don't we all turn the fridges up to maximum and leave the doors open too.
