AIBU to be glad the heat wave hasn’t reached the UK

I am so glad it’s not 37c here as it is in Europe. I love this weather, 22c is enough for me. My husbands moaning we haven’t had a summer, I love this weather, I can sleep at night, I can go to work without getting all sweaty, I can walk my dogs without worrying of them dying of heat stroke. Anyone else like this weather?

Defen I often thought it would be better to have 3 weeks at Christmas (more time for toys) 3 weeks at Easter (if it’s a later one the weather can be nice) & 4 weeks in the Summer (still time to properly relax but might stop boredom at the end)

SecretWitch · 27/06/2019 15:07

It will be 32 degrees here in New England tomorrow. The weather people all say “hazy, hot and humid” with a bright cheery smile. I hate them. I will be in my air conditioned home all day. Fuck the heat.

Caspianberg · 27/06/2019 15:17

Austria here. Have a Netamo wifi thermometer in the shade at the back of our house. Its 37.6 right now.

No air conditioning. No siestas. It gets to 30 on average most summers, then -15 or colder most winters.

I'm am absolutely desperate for a heatwave, I'm so sick of it being cold and damp all the time. I pretty much hate every season except summer and if it wasn't for dsc I'd be moving somewhere a bit warmer permanently!

schnubbins · 27/06/2019 15:54

Southern Germany here also.Yesterday was hotter at 37 degrees which isn't unusual for summers here .Its just unusual for June.No Air con just shutters down and windows closed until this evening.I was reading in the newspaper about a bad traffic accident on the Autobahn where two lorries collided .The Autobahn was shut down and the people were stuck for 20kms in their cars for 5 hrs until the road was cleared. That in temps of 38 degrees. The temps on the Autobahn would be then well over 40 degrees. What an absolutely nightmare.Apparently one woman was airlifted out when she went into labour. But the rest had to sit it out. That would be my worst nightmare in these high temperatures!

Siameasy · 27/06/2019 16:39

I liked it last summer and would like some sun please! My plants have grown huge due to rain but are late to flower.

TapasForTwo · 27/06/2019 17:37

DD is in Berlin where it was 37 degrees yesterday. A 40 minute walk uphill with a heavy rucksack on her back was not fun. Today she says it is 26 degrees and much more comfortable.

Joy of joys it is sunny here today and has been 23 degrees!!!!

Unsure72 · 27/06/2019 17:46

"I agree, 22, 23 is perfect and as temperature readings are always taken in the shade it will feel much warmer than that in the sun anyway."

Are they really @buttermilkwaffles? You learn something new every day!

ForalltheSaints · 27/06/2019 17:57

I'm glad because we have the humidity and air quality issues that go with it. as politicians are not brave enough to tackle air quality issues and severely restrict or ban diesel cars and 4x4s.

averylongtimeago · 27/06/2019 17:58

It's 41 here and last nights temperature didn't drop below 20.
It's humid too and I am hiding indoors.
Hotter tomorrow but thankfully cooling down on Sunday to a more pleasant 30.

@ MimosasAllRound

As PP have said, Spain and Portugal might have marvellous aircon and siestas, but France doesn't.
The nationwide exams which should have been today and tomorrow have been delayed until Monday, school fêtes have been cancelled, music schools closed....anthing outdoors has been cancelled.
I am sitting here in my underwear behind closed shutters and it's hell. I am trying to work.

LakieLady · 27/06/2019 18:08

YANBU. I was in SW France in 2003 and it went over 40C while I was there. It was so hot that the (unheated) pool was like a tepid bath, even at 6 am. Thankfully, the house was old, with massive thick walls, so stayed relatively cool.

Even so, we put a couple of chairs in the middle of the hall, where 2 corridors crossed, and had the 4 outside doors open. It set up a current of air right at the point where the corridors crossed and was quite comfortable. Whenever we went into a town, we had to pop into churches to cool off.

We went to visit some friends who lived further south and you could see the Pyrenees from their garden. It was really strange, standing in baking heat and seeing snow.

Today has been fab here (Sussex): really sunny and warm, but very breezy, so you don't get too hot.

Redglitter · 27/06/2019 18:13

28 today - west of Scotland, - and it's far too hot theres absolutely no breeze at all

justasking111 · 27/06/2019 18:16

Can I ask why in countries like Germany, France, where it does regularly get hot why there is no air con. even if it is only in the bedroom at night? You can get window type ones.

BogstandardBelle · 27/06/2019 18:31

In @MimosasAllRound defence, I agree with her that in the south of France clime is getting more and more common. My parents have a holiday home down there, and in their cul-de-sac of 6 houses, all have installed clime in the last 4-5 years. Though i have to say that only two of those houses are occupied by French people: all the rest are from the UK / Northern Europe ;-) maybe that’s why.

But in the cities... nope. Partly because it’s still the norm to rent rather than own, and landlords are not going to pay to install clime. Ditto old public buildings - it would cost billions to retrofit aircon into all the old school buildings here. Also - old apartments rather than new builds maybe? And the norm here is to open windows / shutters in the morning, then close everything up tight between 10am and 6pm. It does help - but we do have to live like mole people during the daylight hours.

Been here 11 yrs. Summer is always hard, but the last 2-3 yrs have been exceptionally so.

I like the just part.....Grin

Six months is exactly the time it takes for the earth to be tilted in the opposite direction and for mid winter to turn into mid summer.

schnubbins · 27/06/2019 18:40

Germans are terrified of Air Conditioning. It causes all sorts of diseases like bladder infections , colds , stiff neck and near death.Probably as equally terrifying as a draught from an open window in a packed train or office. Open a window in a car and watch the reactions. My kids did often with their Opa (grandfather)just to see his reaction.
On a more serious note , it's only a few weeks in the year generally and most houses have shutters against the cold and the heat.I couldn't be bothered having another appliance taking up room and plus that , you get used to it.There is the environmental factor also and the fact that retrofitting old buildings would be too costly.

Pinkfinkle · 27/06/2019 18:41

YANBU. It was 22 degrees here and Sports Day so I’ve spent hours standing around in it, I feel ill!

sigmabond · 27/06/2019 18:50

Thankfully where I am in southern Central Europe air con is very normal. Not every home has it, but most people I know and most shops, public buildings etc. We also use the external shutters strategically but the AC is invaluable this week and from June-August usually.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/06/2019 19:01

DD1 was born in Germany... The hospital was used to British and their odd refusal to use the thick duvets on their babies, just the sleeping bag, sleepsuit vest hat cardigan ensemble. It was late June and the hospital was boiling! They do seem terrified of cold!

ArfArfBarf · 27/06/2019 19:06

schnubbins 😂 so true

justasking111 · 27/06/2019 19:08

@schnubbins wow that is an eye opener. My granny had a thing about draughts, but I thought everyone had moved on from that.

MissConductUS · 27/06/2019 19:08

Air conditioning is pretty standard in New York homes. Not having it would be considered a real impediment if you needed to sell, as people expect it. It is a huge help this time of year, especially if you have young children who would get cranky or sleep poorly in the heat.

I just walked outside for an hour in the full sun. It's 33 degrees C here and it really wasn't that bad.

I don't think you can buy a car in the US without AC.

justasking111 · 27/06/2019 19:08

My friends in USA have a lovely old house but still had the window adaptations to take that ugly air con unit.
