AIBU to be glad the heat wave hasn’t reached the UK

I am so glad it’s not 37c here as it is in Europe. I love this weather, 22c is enough for me. My husbands moaning we haven’t had a summer, I love this weather, I can sleep at night, I can go to work without getting all sweaty, I can walk my dogs without worrying of them dying of heat stroke. Anyone else like this weather?

28c in the US with 70% humidity, should hit 35c over the weekend. Can’t wait for some warm.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/06/2019 01:01

I just want blue skies.

It is always so grey

thethethethethe · 27/06/2019 06:34

I'm on holiday in Prague. It's so hot that I'm getting up at 5am, then crashing out in the afternoon. At midnight last night it was still 34 degrees. Almost nowhere has air-conditioning, happily. Would hate to have to work in this heat all summer.
The continentals aren't coping so well. In France and Germany they've cut school hours because of the heat. Must be a nightmare for parents.

My husbands moaning we haven’t had a summer

Well it's only been summer for 5 days so tell him to chill his beans!

IHeartKingThistle · 27/06/2019 06:58

I've just sent my 12 year old off to Paris on a school trip for 4 days. I'm trying not to worry and feeling sorry for the teachers!

"I get probably irrationally angry when people complain we haven't had summer"

Because for many of us it is true. The only hot weather we have had was at Easter. Since coming back from holiday in mid May there has not been one single day where it has been warm enough to wear sandals. I am still in socks.

Looking at the weather history for our area we have had the coolest June in the last ten years. Yesterday's high was 16 degrees.

evilharpy · 27/06/2019 07:14

I’m jealous of people in France. I’m Irish but seem to have been given the wrong dna as I can’t cope with the cold at all. I still have the winter 15 tog duvet on the bed and my winter clothes haven’t been out away.

It’s meant to be 29°C in England (where I live) this weekend. But I’ll be in Ireland where the forecast is shit. Less than 20° and pissing it down on Saturday. Tempted to miss my flight.

TalbotAMan · 27/06/2019 07:20

The last 6 weeks have been miserable and dark. The temperatures here have been closer to February than June. Even when it has been warm, the humidity has been stifling.

For the first time in weeks it is sunny and dry this morning. Later on, when it is warm, I shall go outside into the garden and worship the sun with my body.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 27/06/2019 07:21

I’ve been on holiday during this heatwave, so haven’t been home yet.

Am in France and I have half metre thick stone walls. Usually keep the shutters closed all day. Open the windows first thing, to cool down the house; then keep them shut all day

DuggeesWoggle · 27/06/2019 07:49

Where in the NE of England was hot yesterday? I'm in North Yorkshire and it was pleasantly cool although muggy too. I say pleasantly as I'm 7 months pregnant and very much NOT a lover of heatwaves - pale, auburn haired, sweaty. I hate humidity. Last weekend was lovely though - warm and sunny but with cool breezes every now and then and cool at night. I think it was 22 max. Our front garden is a South facing sun trap, back is north facing and has the breeze off the hills, and the kitchen floor is nice cold tiling. So hopefully on Saturday when it hits 29 we will be able to cool down.

I really feel for people who can't escape the heat, it really can make you feel very ill.

BogstandardBelle · 27/06/2019 08:04

Not sure where in Europe @MimosasAllRound is but here in eastern French city there’s not a lot of aircon around. Big offices and supermarkets, yes. Homes and schools - nope. It’s 9am and I’ve already shut the windows as it’s hotter outside than in (27 degrees). I’ll close the shutters by 10am, and we will spend the day like sweaty mole people, hiding in the dark... except that there is a cantine strike at school today and I have to venture out at midday to collect DS and two classmates-sob! Then return them at 2pm-double sob!!

Top temp here yesterday was 39.6 in the shade... it’s going to break that today.

origamiunicorn · 27/06/2019 08:33

30s is fine in drier heat but in the UK you get that swampy heat where you just sweat and sweat and it's so muggy.

I find I can tolerate quite hot temperatures in places like Greece or Turkey but here, anything above 26 is usually horrid.

It's going to be 27 today and 28 tomorrow so I'm looking forward to bring a sticky mess 😬

balalalala · 27/06/2019 09:03

I'm on holiday in France with a 6 month old and 2 year old. It's due to be 39 today and there's no air con. It's fair to say we're struggling somewhat!

Gin96 · 27/06/2019 09:30

@balalala that sound awful 😞 you can’t even go out with little ones in that heat, you need to set up a paddling pool in doors 😊
To be in a city when it’s hot is the worst, if your by the coast it’s manageable, good luck

MimosasAllRound · 27/06/2019 09:34

To all the people who tagged me saying air con isn't the norm in Europe - I can only speak for my region in the south of France where every office, public building and most houses have air con. We become gradually accustomed to the heat and when it gets horribly hot, we have AC.

I'm sorry to those of you who don't, but it's really not very expensive to buy AC units and completely worth it for those who live in hotter areas.

Mainlandeurope · 27/06/2019 09:46

There's not been any 'heat' in the UK at all so far this year. I don't envy mid 40's though in Europe, that's just dreadful. As for aircon, it's more of the feedback warming isnt it? More CO2 into the atmosphere which will make it heat up even more 😢

GabsAlot · 27/06/2019 09:51

i cant regulate my body either-im sweating now in 20 degrees-at least in the winter u can put layers on you cant do anything in the summer

StayAChild · 27/06/2019 10:27

It's very noticeable how patchy the weather is all over the UK. Pockets of heat/cold even in places not that far apart. It's managed to reach 15.8 here so far this morning and it looks brighter, with a distinct possibly of clouds breaking up. I'm so fed up of the grey blanket we've had for most of June.

To the PP who mentioned school holidays, IME of many years working in school, if June/July is rainy, you've got a good chance of a good 6 weeks holiday. If it's roasting in June/early July, good chance of a wash out 6 week holiday, so this year's school holiday should be good.

Oliversmumsarmy · 27/06/2019 11:18

Wasn’t 5 days ago Mid Summers Day not the start of Summer.

GabsAlot · 27/06/2019 13:34

It was boiling all of last july in the se was still boiling come august

Defenbaker · 27/06/2019 14:20

@StayAChild - yes, agree about the patchy weather across the UK. I think that people have a tendency to focus on their local weather pattern, and sometimes forget that at the other end of the UK there can be completely different weather going on. I'm on the south coast, and have often felt sorry for those up north, where there is generally more rain and less sun. Except for last year in the heatwave, I was a bit envious when they had less extreme heat.

Also, re school summer hols, I've noticed it's often the case that we get the warmest weather in late June/early July, then it seems to break mid July and become very indifferent for the 6 week break. I wonder if it might work better to have a longer Easter holiday and shorter summer break? Kids often seem very bored in those last 2 weeks and some parents seem to struggle to keep them entertained for such a long break.

Meadow1203 · 27/06/2019 14:23

I am in France and it is 38, trying to work aaah.

Vibiano · 27/06/2019 14:35

I'm in Southern Germany and no air con round here including schools.
It was already 32 degrees when I was coming back from the supermarket at 10.30.
Although I'm looking forward to tonight, apparently it's going to get down to 13!
We're hiding inside playing on the Wii because it's too hot to go out
