AIBU to be glad the heat wave hasn’t reached the UK

I am so glad it’s not 37c here as it is in Europe. I love this weather, 22c is enough for me. My husbands moaning we haven’t had a summer, I love this weather, I can sleep at night, I can go to work without getting all sweaty, I can walk my dogs without worrying of them dying of heat stroke. Anyone else like this weather?

I can manage 24 at a push, last year in the heatwave when it reached 31 inland (I live on the coast) we were coming back from holiday and were visiting family inland, I was sick from heat exhaustion, despite drinking untold amounts. We are going to Disneyland in 4 weeks and I’ve been seeing the temp and praying it’s not like that when we go, I get anxiety as it is so it will hit the roof in that situation ☹️

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 26/06/2019 22:30

Also in the Midlands (v South Warks) & can confirm it’s definitely cool.

MerryBerryCheesecake · 26/06/2019 22:33

I'm in the West Midlands.

Can somebody tell me what means this "sunshine" word of which some of you speak.

Grey, grey, more grey...then for a change some grey with a tinge of piss yellow. Dark all day. I've seen snow in the rain at least 10 times in the last month, last time being 3 days ago. I feel like setting the place on fire just to brighten things up a bit.

I'm south facing, forty five feet up in the air and I've just switched the bloody electric fire on. Thermometer in my living room says 19 C.

I hate hot weather but this is just not funny any more. Needs a couple more degrees for my comfort because cold causes me physical pain (circulation issues).

I usually use the decrease in electricity costs (can't have gas, not even got the pipes for it in these flats) to help pay my sodding council tax and water bill but I am only putting £10 less in the electric meter per week than in the first week of January.

InsertFunnyUsername · 26/06/2019 22:33

I agree OP.

I almost died last year on holiday - ok slightly dramatic- when it hit mid 40s. I couldn't imagine living somewhere with them temperatures, i suppose you're used to it.

A nice 20° will do me.

notangelinajolie · 26/06/2019 22:36

We were in Madrid in the last big heatwave in August 2003. Temperatures were in the mid 40's and it was horrendous. We were doing a road trip through Europe and it was lovely driving in our air conditioned car - but getting 3 kids from the car to the toilets was actually scary. We were also in Florence and Rome that summer and spend most it in air conditioned leather shops pretending to look at purses. You literally couldn't breath.

We seem to have a habit of hitting heatwaves - we were in Lisbon last summer when they recorded record breaking temperatures.

It's bad enough in this country when it's too hot. I'm fine with a week but any longer than that and I start getting stressy. I don't think I could ever live in a hot place full time. It's been nice up north today. Temperatures in the low 20's and that is perfect for me - our back doors are still open and I'm watching bats flying across the night sky.

Pasithea · 26/06/2019 22:38

Bloody cold here still. NE.

justasking111 · 26/06/2019 22:38

17c here today, overcast. I am not good in hot weather especially at night. I like the sun just not too much heat. The garden is destroyed this year plants just rotted off in the hanging baskets and planters. Roses bashed to bits in the rain and wind.

Accountant222 · 26/06/2019 22:38

We lit the wood burner tonight as it was chilly, I'm dreading a heatwave, 22 is about my max for comfort

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/06/2019 22:44

Bloody hell, I am in Scotland and excited for 17 degrees on the weather app tomorrow. I am desperate for some warm days. On the plus side I do enjoy not having to deforest for wearing skirts.

Turquoisetamborine · 26/06/2019 22:45

I’m fair with blonde hair. Can you imagine how great it was arriving to move to Kuwait in the middle of August! We once saw temperatures of 52 degrees!

If the mercury hits 50 they close schools/offices etc but it rarely happens. At least there was air con though.

I like it to be no higher than 22 here for comfort at night.

TapasForTwo · 26/06/2019 22:51

“Anyone else like this weather?”

What is “this weather" for you? Here is South Yorkshire we have had a very wet and very cool June. The light levels have been like November at dusk for days in a row. It is utterly, utterly miserable, and I hate it. I wouldn’t like 37 degrees either but right now I yearn for a bit of sun, and temperatures 10 degrees higher than it has been. It has been truly awful. Yesterday we had 13 degrees and pouring rain that never stopped all day.

We seem to be in a microclimate of awful weather here as we spent the weekend in Northumberland where it was very pleasant. My workmates told me that it rained all weekend here.

Our heating is still coming on, and I am sat here in a dressing gown, and my tumble dryer has been used far too much this month. I can’t remember the last time I line dried any clothes.

The lawn hasn’t been cut for ages. I have rose petals scattered all over it and my lupins have been flattened by the rain. I am feeling unfit because I haven’t been doing much outside and have no motivation to do so in the pouring rain.

22 or 23 degrees would be perfect, so please forgive me if I am snappish with anyone complaining that they are too hot when it is 22 degrees.

Thesearmsofmine · 26/06/2019 22:58

After non stop rain yesterday and a grey cool day today I am looking forward to some nice sunny weather. Mid 20’s will be perfect for me.

AdoraBell · 26/06/2019 23:01

I don’t cope well with humidity, bloody loved the climate in Chile, 40 degrees was hot but not unbearable. At 23 degrees I needed a cardigan Shock Been back here in good old, bloody humid Hmm ,Blighty for a few years and I don’t like the weather

IdblowJonSnow · 26/06/2019 23:02

I'm in europe now, 30 plus degrees, no air con or breeze. Am miserable. Going to some caves tomo to get cool.
Anything over 23ish too hot for me since I've had kids.Blush

thethethethethe · 26/06/2019 23:03

Mimosas - if you really live in Europe you'll know that NOT having air-conditioning is the norm for many, probably most. Thank goodness (carbon emissions). You'll also know that the UK is IN Europe, not outside it. Just as much as any other fully European country is.

thethethethethe · 26/06/2019 23:04

Yes, the weather in central Scotland is great. I even enjoy the winters there.

StayAChild · 26/06/2019 23:05

11.8 deg here tonight in S Yorks. I think we've had 4 days when it hasn't rained in over 3 weeks.
I really wanted to put my scarf and gloves on when I went out to the local shop earlier. Very chilly and damp.

BoronationStreet · 26/06/2019 23:05

I'm absolutely dreading it. I'm American and I've never lived anywhere without AC, so heatwaves in the U.K. are hell on earth for me. It will be absolutely miserable. Bring on winter please!

IrisAtwood · 26/06/2019 23:07

I love cooler weather too. In fact, rain is my favourite and I have enjoyed the recent rainy spell. I am lucky to be in an area that does not flood though.

AdaShelby · 26/06/2019 23:09

I've had the hearing on. Dreary and grey and horrid here.

plominoagain · 26/06/2019 23:28

Us too , in Norfolk . Grey grey and grey all day here , which suits me when I’m night shift . Sleeping during the day last summer was torture .

LaurieFairyCake · 26/06/2019 23:38

I've bought a dog cooling blanket to put on the bed when it gets hot

You lie on it and it wicks the heat away from your body

Defenbaker · 26/06/2019 23:55

YANBU, OP. We live on the south coast and although I was very glad when the sunshine arrived (after 2 weeks of rain most days), I'm glad we don't have the extremely high temperatures that are occuring in mainland Europe. I enjoy warmth, anything from 18 to 23 degrees is lovely, but when it goes up to high 20s it's too much for me. Also, the humid nights are horrible. I appreciate warmth but dislike extreme heat.

Anarchyshake · 27/06/2019 00:01

I get probably irrationally angry when people complain we haven't had summer, when we've had heat like there's been where I live (bit outside London). It's obviously wonderful for normal people but I've never been able to regulate my temperature and get very sick and extremely uncomfortably sweaty (as in, running down my face and needing a towel, from just standing in it) with how we're getting it at the moment.

Tonight I've actually closed a window in the bedroom for a change, but I'm relishing that it's cold enough for me to be able to use my duvet.

If anyone has any insight into why I've always been like this, please inbox me. I can't cope anymore.

DrCoconut · 27/06/2019 00:06

I'm just longing for summer to start now. I shouldn't be doing the school run in a coat and winter boots when it's nearly July. It's so cold and miserable and has rained almost daily for a couple of weeks. It's looking like only the weekend is forecast to get out of the teens temperature wise, back to grey and cold next week. Last year was lovely, a repeat would be good. I hope it warms up significantly for the summer holidays so we can get out and do things.
