Bleached hair, posting for traffic

Didn't know where to put this so feel free to move it MN if there is a hair section that I couldn't find lol but posting for traffic.

I previously had a dark brown root smudge leading into blonde hair at the bottom, my hair is not long, collar bone length. This colour was done at the hairdressers but was costing me £60 for this plus a trim every 3 months and I just can't afford it anymore.

Quite liked the blonde at the bottom and decided for the summer I'd like to go full head blonde so I bought a blonde hair dye thinking since most of the hair was that colour anyway it'd be OK... it was not OK, it went a weird pale brown all over, not even a nice shade of brown at all. So I decided to buy a pre-lightner (basically bleach I think it was), I put this on today and the roots are now ginger and the rest is a lovely shade of blonde. My question is will a normal blonde hair dye fix the root colour or am I going to have to bleach it again (after leaving it for a while first of course)?

Have you tried silver shampoo and conditioner to get rid of the brassiness?

I doubt you will ever get the root up to the same blonde at home. The 'brown' colour your hair went all over was probably right. Home blonde dyes don't really go very blonde.

Hair dye works on a number system 1-11 with 1 being the darkest and 11 the lightest. Bleach is a few shades lighter than the lightest dye which is 11. So although 11 looks really blonde it's not comparison to bleached hair.

The easiest and quickest fix would be to go back to the root smudge and DIY at home. The best fix would be go to the hairdressers and get the roots lifted professionally so hair is same colour all over but you will still have to have this maintained at the salon.

The other thing you could do is go for a mid blonde and keep you up with that yourself at home. You could ask the salon what colour they use and they may give you the number. You will be able to buy similar in Superdrug or boots or you can order the same dye offline.

A picture would help hugely but I think you should go back to the hairdresser and have them ‘rectify’ it so it looks normal. Ask about the best (cheapest) way to go blonde for summer. I’d suggest ballayage personally.

rarfy I will try to post a pic now. The blonde dye I used said on the box it was 9.1. "viking ice blonde" it was called that gave me the weird brown colour. I'm happy with the colour of the hair other than the roots after the bleach so is there no chance another bleach on the roots alone would make it match the rest?

If the home dye kit is lighter than the ginger then it won’t work. Hair has to be lightened (bleach) before you dye it a light colour.

Bleaching your hair at home is pretty much going to be a disaster. Search for it on You Tube and you’ll see so many videos of disasterous diy bleaching.

There’s a reason we pay professionals to do it for us! It’s not impossible to diy it but you’re going to have to do your research (and a lot of it) first.

lels99 I haven't tried silver shampoo, what does this do? I was actually using a violet shampoo by John freida that was recommended for the blonde I already had it in with the dark roots.

If the roots havent lifted light enough then the silver shampoo will not take the orange out.

The silver shampoo won't touch it.

You would need bleach with a high volume peroxide and even then it would likely lift to a yellowish blonde where you would need to put a toner over it and it would likely never truly match the ends. You would end up with a band around the top of your hair. The best fix really is a hairdresser.

9.1 isn't that blonde I'm afraid and if you have put that over hair that is dyed darker it won't really do anything other than change the tone.

What the feck are the hairdressers using that we can't get our hands on? When I first got the blonde on the middle/ends done at the salon, I was going from a dark auburn colour and it went perfect blonde first attempt for her lol

I used to go to the salon for blonde highlights. When I couldn't afford it, I bought blonde hair dyes. They never ever produce a good colour like the salon because the hairdresser mixes the colours to suit your colouring. My hair dresser used to mix the blonde with another cool colour to counter out the ginger effect! I've now had it all toned down at the salon to my natural colour, so no more roots! Natural beats a botched blonde colour any day.

From a distance it's not as drastic looking but up close (and in person) very gingery. I have to go to work like this tomorrow...

The hairdressers are using bleach as well but they have the experience and the skills to be able to use it effectively.

Also, you’re trying to match the roots to the rest, which isn’t as easy as dying the whole thing one colour.

Decent bleach and high vol peroxide. Every chance they put a toner through in one form or another without even mentioning it.

You won't get that to match up yourself.

If you don't want to shell out at hairdressers buy a 7.0 dye and do the root smudge yourself. Basically back comb your hair just below where the ginger meets the blonde then colour everything above the back comb so near to your scalp witt the 7.0 dye. It probs won't look salon good but would be fine.

So your roots had colour on as a root smudge? Then you have put a lighter coloured box dye over that? Then attempted to bleach it?

Colour wont lift colour, that was your first mistake in using a lighter blonde over the roots. (If ive understood you correctly)

This would be considered a corrective colour service and def should not be attempted at home if you are not a qualified professional. That is what you pay us for.
You need to see your hairdresser again to sort it then decide what you want going forward if you are looking for something low maintenance.

As an aside, pre lightener isnt just a few shades lighter than an '11'. Bleach works in a different way.
We use bleach for lightening when we need more than 3-4 levels of lift.

Just as an aside @Rarfy why the back combing? (I’m just interested.)

Back combing softens the line between the two colours so you don't get a solid block line e.g. A massive stripe around your head.

Aah @Nogodsnomasters I've been in your situation several times and I have managed to get my hair from your color to white blonde. I've used Jerome Blonde kits, it's bleach and it will lift the orange or at least it did for me.
I must point out though over bleaching hair will leave it in really crap condition and dying it too much runs the risk of "chewing gum" hair.
also once you get blonde use purple/silver shampoo to keep the brassiness away.
