Bleached hair, posting for traffic

Nogodsnomasters · 09/06/2019 21:07

Didn't know where to put this so feel free to move it MN if there is a hair section that I couldn't find lol but posting for traffic.

I previously had a dark brown root smudge leading into blonde hair at the bottom, my hair is not long, collar bone length. This colour was done at the hairdressers but was costing me £60 for this plus a trim every 3 months and I just can't afford it anymore.

Quite liked the blonde at the bottom and decided for the summer I'd like to go full head blonde so I bought a blonde hair dye thinking since most of the hair was that colour anyway it'd be OK... it was not OK, it went a weird pale brown all over, not even a nice shade of brown at all. So I decided to buy a pre-lightner (basically bleach I think it was), I put this on today and the roots are now ginger and the rest is a lovely shade of blonde. My question is will a normal blonde hair dye fix the root colour or am I going to have to bleach it again (after leaving it for a while first of course)?

Thank you!

I also told OP she should re- bleach her hair again so if you’re going to quote me or pick bits out of my posts at least read everything I have said previously.

Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 13:36

I do have one question, since the toner is non peroxide and no ammonia, does this mean its not as harsh as a box dye on the hair? Just so I know how many times I'm processing it if the toner doesn't really count?

I agree with @LorelaiRoryEmily the toner wont do much at all.

I would either go darker again on the roots (i do this myself at home) or go and get it lightened again at a salon.

exWifebeginsat40 · 10/06/2019 14:12

i use Schwarzkopf bleach - 00A Absolute Platinum, and do mine at home. my hair is naturally a dark mouse, and this lifts it to white-blonde. i will say that it takes a second go at the parting sometimes to lift it past orange.

i have been doing this for about 10 years now, and have not had stretchy weirdness or brittle snaps. maybe i’m lucky? i just wanted to say that it’s perfectly possible to achieve what you’re after with a home bleach kit. at your own risk, obviously!

Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 14:45

pointlessusername I have said many times on the thread I will not be using a salon for the foreseeable future. I feel that going dark would defeat the absolute purpose, I am willing to try a few things before giving up the ghost and going brown if absolutely necessary. I have only used one box dye 4 days ago and 1 pre-lightner 24hrs ago, I've not been going crazy throwing loads of different things on my hair.

It's hard because you've been given a lot of good advice from hairdressers on this thread.......most of that advice has been "go to a professional" and unfortunately you can't afford that.

Personally, if I was you I would try to find the money to afford it one last time. Get it sorted professionally and ask for a low maintenance colour that you can do your roots at your yourself going forwards.

You've paid £60 every 3 months......I just think that right now seems a really bad time to stop that.

The college was a really good suggestion. You could also try the Treatwell app and look for a good deal, they quite often have cheap last minute appointments etc. Or ask about for a local mobile hairdresser, they tend to be cheaper as they have less overheads.

I've been in your position many times. I'm in it right now in fact. I had balayage done on my hair but couldn't afford the time/money for regular appointments. I started trying to do the upkeep myself by just colouring my roots (greys Blush). I have been to two separate hairdressers since then (just for a trim) and they have both immediately asked what the hell ive been doing to my hair Blush They've said I have light roots, then a big thick black band across the middle, then light roots. I had thought it looked ok (not great, admittedly, but acceptable) but you never really get that good a view of your hair. Clearly to other people it was quite noticeably shit. I'm making an app to go back and get it fixed up soon. Once fixed, I will take advice from the hairdresser on how to manage my roots.

Whatever you decide, good luck x

LorelaiRoryEmily · 10/06/2019 15:06

@dontthinkofthegame toners are mixed with 10vol, 3% not 20 vol 6%. If you are using 6% then you are lifting the hair so that’s probably why you think a toner will work on that colour. It won’t. A toner mixed with 3% or even 1.9% will clean up a colour somewhat or add a pastel colour to bleached hair. It absolutely will not turn op’s orange hair to a clean blonde. You probably didn’t know that what you’re mixing there is not technically a toner. It is a tint.Wink

Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 18:13

OK everyone, I went to the salon supply shop and this time spoke to a very knowledgeable young gay fellow (compared to the elderly gentleman when I went in for gel nail polish months ago). I've purchased farmavita professional colouring cream in a 912 and was advised to use this first mixed with 20 vol 6% peroxide to lift the orange (this was £5 and I got one with argan oil and aloetrix), then a 2nd colorant of 10.2 pearl blonde. He said to mix the 912 with my violet shampoo for a better lift. So the Jerome Russel is out the window. I shall start after dinner.

Better but still has some orange, that's the first go.

LorelaiRoryEmily

Honestly I get what you’re saying and I’m sure you are a great hairdresser, but I think you are wrong. What you are saying about toners is incorrect.

The toner I am talking about would lift OP’s hair I have done it myself with hair that is super similar to OP’s.

I’m not getting into it with you but I can guarantee I know what I’m talking about, you’re not the only one who knows how to professionally colour hair!

ravenshope · 10/06/2019 21:01

Great advice here by people who all do their own hair at home:

@dontthinkofthegame
Ok dear. Whatever you say😊

Rarfy · 10/06/2019 21:20

Can't see your updated pic op but please know that toner is definitely not doing to give you the look you want.

You are basically going to still have a root smudge just a different colour root to before and to what it is now. It will just be less copper coloured but still darker at the route.

I know you keep referring to bleach but from what I remember did you just use a 9. Something dye in the first place? If so that is just dye and not bleach, although damaging it's nowhere near as damaging as bleach.

Also the way bleach works is it strips the colour from your hair shaft, the lighter and whiter it goes the more damaged the hair.

sheshootssheimplores · 10/06/2019 21:23

I like it OP!!!!

Rarfy · 10/06/2019 21:23

Also I know what you're saying about the salon cost, I have dyed mine dark now as I can't afford to go and have made very similar mistakes to you a million times in the past but trying to put this right, in the long run, will end up costing almost the same.

If you have just had a trim what I would suggest to keep costs down this one time is a half head of fine highlights then leaving the salon with it wet. This should cost only around £35 judging by what you have been paying recently. You will easily spend that I bet trying to get it right at home.

sheshootssheimplores · 10/06/2019 21:24

This is OPs photo for those that can’t see it

Rarfy · 10/06/2019 21:31

Thanks I can see it now. The cheapest and easiest solution in my opinion is giving in getting a 7.0 dye (as it still has a lot of red tone running through it) and sticking with the root smudge.

LittleLongDog · 10/06/2019 21:50

Are you happy with it OP?

Starburst8 · 10/06/2019 21:56

Would a colour remover not remove the orange?
I use them to get rid of browns/red colours, so would be interesting to know.
I'm not suggesting OP to try this I'm just wondering if it would. Just thinking might be less harsh on the hair. I've been in OPs situation with orange hair and always bleached it out but if there's an alternative 🤔

PointlessUsername · 10/06/2019 22:20

I know you said no to a professional doing it, i was just trying to point out that it would be a 1 time thing to get it light enough all over to then use the box dyes from then on.

Without you will not be able to tone it to blonde from orange.

If you search Gumtree in your area there are at times Hairdressers needing models for colours and will be overseen by a fully quilified Colourist/stylist.

Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 22:46

ravenshope thanks that forum is interesting!

OP posts:
Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 22:50

sheshootssheimplores aw thank you kindly. I'm still not 100% happy with it because it still has some ginger tones which is not what I want.

The 10.02 I purchased as the 2nd step I may return this tomorrow after work and exchange it for a slightly ashier looking blonde so that it's a shade darker than it currently is to attempt to mask the remnants of orange.

OP posts:
Rarfy · 11/06/2019 07:35

@Nogodsnomasters hi OP, I know it's all confusing but Ash is the tone and therefore is you got a 10 Ash tone dye it wouldn't actually be darker.

I can't remember which way round it is but a violet tone cancels out either red or yellow tones in blonde hair and a blue tone cancels out red tones in blonde hair.

Ash is either violet or blue, again I can't remember but the answer to these things is what you need to get rid of the red tones through your hair.

The guy in the salon shop will know so I would trust what he's given you. That colour should get rid of the red tones if his advice is right but your root will still be darker.

Colour doesn't lift colour and as your root is already dyed and I would say a base 7. The base 10 dye which is what you have is 3 shades lighter, on natural hair it would lift the hair the 3 shades but because yours is dyes it won't lift it at all or you might see a slight difference but not much really.

Nogodsnomasters · 11/06/2019 08:44

Super confused. I'm worried if I put the 10.02 on then I'll still have ginger tones. I'm just going to have to bleach the ginger parts and nowhere else one more time to lift it to a yellow tone before putting the 10.02 on aren't I?

OP posts:
HarryHenderson · 11/06/2019 10:31

What are you planning to do once your roots come through? Won't you just have the same problem all over again? Confused

Honestly, I would go darker.
Blonde can only be done in a salon imo. And yes, plenty of people will say 'I've been dyeing my hair blonde at home for yeeears!' ...I hate to say it, but it's glaringly obvious when blonde has been done with a box job.

I'm not saying this to knock you... I've been where you are many, many times! I learnt the hard way that some things are best left to the professionals!
