Bleached hair, posting for traffic

Nogodsnomasters · 09/06/2019 21:07

Didn't know where to put this so feel free to move it MN if there is a hair section that I couldn't find lol but posting for traffic.

I previously had a dark brown root smudge leading into blonde hair at the bottom, my hair is not long, collar bone length. This colour was done at the hairdressers but was costing me £60 for this plus a trim every 3 months and I just can't afford it anymore.

Quite liked the blonde at the bottom and decided for the summer I'd like to go full head blonde so I bought a blonde hair dye thinking since most of the hair was that colour anyway it'd be OK... it was not OK, it went a weird pale brown all over, not even a nice shade of brown at all. So I decided to buy a pre-lightner (basically bleach I think it was), I put this on today and the roots are now ginger and the rest is a lovely shade of blonde. My question is will a normal blonde hair dye fix the root colour or am I going to have to bleach it again (after leaving it for a while first of course)?

Thank you!

Purple shampoo will not touch that. It's still too orange. You need blue shampoo.

www.salonsdirect.com/fanola-no-orange-shampoo-350ml

As a PP said purple/blue shampoos are very drying. Only use them every few washes and use a decent hair mask afterwards. Osmo Deep Moisture Intense Repair mask is good and cheap and has a good balance of protein and moisture.

Give your hair a break for a few weeks. When you do your roots tone with Wella Colour Touch 8/81 or 7/81 and Wella Colour Touch 8/6 or 7/6 (mixed at 1:1) or add 2-3cm of colour touch special mix 0/66 depending on the colour your roots go and. Yellowy-orange (like you have now) is a level 8, orange is a level 7. Use a 1.9% peroxide.

Never use higher than 20 Volume on your scalp unless you want chemical burns and always use a bleach designed for on scalp use like Wella Blondor Lightening Cream.

You still won't get the same results as at a salon but you probably will get a blonde you can live with.

PoppadomPeach · 14/06/2019 16:25

So happy it's come out so well for you OP. Your hair still looks silky smooth too Grin

I started doing my hair not long ago and (even though I know what I'm doing) I was absolutely terrified. I've taken my time and the colour is just where I want it to be - it's been roughly 5 weeks since I started though.

Give it lots of TLC now - conditioning masques, restoring treatments, leave-in treatments and as little heat as possible.
Use the purple/blue/violet shampoo sparingly - twice a week at most and follow it with a deep condition.
My friend swears by Creightons purple conditioning mask from Home Bargains. It's 99p so I'm not convinced but she sings it's praises all the time!

Nat6999 · 14/06/2019 16:41

If you go to a Sally's professional shop they sell an additive that comes in 2 parts, one you add to your bleach or colour & then use the other as a treatment when you have washed off the colour. It really helps to stop chemical damage.

howwudufeel · 14/06/2019 18:25

I had no idea that purple shampoo is drying.

Nogodsnomasters · 14/06/2019 19:09

frequency sorry if you think it's still orange from the photo I posted but in real life the orange is gone now the top is dark blonde and the bottom is whiteish blonde. And I already used 30 vol developer on my whole head mixed with the 10.02 creme and did not get a chemical burn or any pain/burning during the process.

Nogodsnomasters · 14/06/2019 19:11

The purple shampoo and conditioner Ive been using is by John freida. I also had no idea purple shampoo was drying and have used it probably 4 times this week, I'll cut down on that now.

Here's a was/now pic if that's any help.

That's a big difference

pollypenguin01 · 14/06/2019 20:24

The thing is, it’s really easy for people on the internet to give you advice but it’s not their hair that will be completely fucked at the end of it!

Using a 30/40 vol developer is just asking for problems, you were really lucky it didn’t fry your hair or really burn you.

I think ‘Frequency’ has given you some very sensible advice.
Although I do think you can get a nice blonde at home rather than a blonde you can live with Grin

pollypenguin01 · 14/06/2019 20:24

Oh and I meant to say that I think it looks great Smile

mindproject · 14/06/2019 20:30

I think it looks good. You will soon be an expert at it and be saving money.

I've been bleaching my hair at home for a few years now because I can't afford to go to the hairdressers. It doesn't seem to have ruined my hair at all, but I use L'oreal oils to put some moisture back in. I bleach my hair with Jerome Russell bleach powder mixed with 30% peroxide. Sometimes I use a Jerome Russell toner if anything looks brassy. I do my roots every 2 months. It's much to maintain than dying hair darker if you are going grey, root touch ups are not needed as often.

If you do decide to go dark again, you need to dye your hair red for a few days before you go brown. If you try and go from blonde to brown you will most likely go green instead. I speak from experience.

Home hair dying is good fun. I've been all colours of the rainbow now.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 14/06/2019 20:45

@Nogodsnomasters I think @Frequency meant if you used the bleach with 30 or 40 vol you risk burning your scalp.
It’s totally safe with colour. And your hair looks great! Well done. It absolutely needed more than just a toner. There’s no way a toner would have fixed it. You’ve done a great job!

LorelaiRoryEmily · 14/06/2019 20:46

Oh and just to add I have used bleach on the scalp with 30 vol and it’s fine. 40 I absolutely wouldn’t dream of doing

mindproject · 14/06/2019 21:33

What do hairdressers use on the scalp?

Nogodsnomasters · 14/06/2019 21:53

Ah I see! I think I'd be too frightened to mix my own bleach for fear of getting the ratio wrong, the bleach I used was a boxed pre lightner which I'm assuming had a 20 vol in it? To those who have said they like it, thank you very much Smile the last time I coloured my own hair was about 10 years ago when I was about 21 and I was doing the whole fuschia pink or postbox red phase lol

OP posts:
LorelaiRoryEmily · 14/06/2019 22:35

@Nogodsnomasters it would have been 20vol in the box that you used

@mindproject we use bleach/pre-lightner mainly with 6% 20 vol. I have on occasion used it on the scalp with 9% 30 vol but 6% is gentler and most commonly used with bleach.

High lift tint can be used on the scalp with 9% 30 vol or 12% 40 vol but you would never ever mix bleach with 40 vol under any circumstances and you certainly couldn’t apply that to the scalp. It would burn really badly

Saavhi · 14/06/2019 22:54

You need Olaplex if it is feeling dry.

Frequency · 14/06/2019 23:34

Olaplex works internally to repair disulphide bonds. It does nothing to address moisture/cuticle condition.

OP, I didn't mean to be nasty. Your hair looks nice. Personally I think you suit it warmer but it's your hair and if you want the icy/platinum look you will need blue shampoo not purple shampoo. There are still orange undertones in the root area. Purple shampoo only addresses super-light yellow (like creamy/inside of a banana type yellow)

And yes, I meant you can't use bleach on scalp with higher volumes. High lift tint (which is what you used) is formulated to be used with higher peroxides. In fact, most bleaches are not meant to be used on scalp at all. Hairdressers use bleaches specially formulated for on-scalp use, generally cream/oil based bleaches rather than powder though some of the more gentle powder bleaches can be used on scalp with low volume peroxides.

Nogodsnomasters · 15/06/2019 07:49

frequency I didn't think you were being nasty, that's OK Smile I just wanted to say that maybe in the last picture it still looked orange to you but in the mirror I can't see any genuine orange anymore but definitely the two tones of blonde are still not even. Where would I find blue shampoo? I've only seen purple and silver in most places. And is blue as drying on the hair as the purple is? I have ordered a wella colour charm toner online for when its ready to get coloured again.

OP posts:
Frequency · 15/06/2019 18:36

I posted a link to Fanola no more orange shampoo earlier in the thread OP. I've never used it. I tend to stick to Osmo as it's cheaper but I've herd rave reviews dfrom clients/other stylists about Fanola. Osmo have a blue and a purple shampoo. They sell it at Sally's. I can never remember which is which so you'll have to ask in the store for the blue one.

Blue is just as drying as purple.

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of Wella Colour Charm. I've never understood why something which claims to be a toner needs such a high developer. The point of a toner is to deposit tone. You only need 1.9% peroxide to deposit tone yet colour charm is mixed with 6% but as a novice you will be probably get a better result with colour charm than you will by mixing your own toner from their Colour Touch range.

BenjiB · 15/06/2019 18:44

A really good toner for when you’re finished with the bleach is Matrix brassoff. I have my hair highlighted at a salon but still use this once a week. It’s better than the purple shampoo you get in the shops x

LorelaiRoryEmily · 15/06/2019 20:49

@Frequency what you’re saying about the wella “toner” is exactly what I was questioning upthread. In my opinion something that requires 6% to develop is not a toner. I’ be never seen a toner that required anything more then 1.9 or 3%

LorelaiRoryEmily · 15/06/2019 21:56

I’ve never seen anything that required more than🤦🏻‍♀️

Nogodsnomasters · 15/06/2019 23:47

I've just seen so many successful videos on YouTube with the colour charm range so thought I'd give it a go as it seemed easy, but I think I understand what you mean, with such a high % it may as well be a colourant and not a toner?

Sorry frequency I just noticed your link to the blue shampoo, is there a big difference between what purple shampoo does vs the blue one?

OP posts:
itsrainingagain19 · 16/06/2019 01:03

Brown hair needs to be bleach twice with a week gap. Add toner and conditioner daily.
Messing around with your hair at home is not easy and the result vary that's why salons charge what they do.
Never trust YouTube.
