Bleached hair, posting for traffic

Nogodsnomasters · 09/06/2019 21:07

Didn't know where to put this so feel free to move it MN if there is a hair section that I couldn't find lol but posting for traffic.

I previously had a dark brown root smudge leading into blonde hair at the bottom, my hair is not long, collar bone length. This colour was done at the hairdressers but was costing me £60 for this plus a trim every 3 months and I just can't afford it anymore.

Quite liked the blonde at the bottom and decided for the summer I'd like to go full head blonde so I bought a blonde hair dye thinking since most of the hair was that colour anyway it'd be OK... it was not OK, it went a weird pale brown all over, not even a nice shade of brown at all. So I decided to buy a pre-lightner (basically bleach I think it was), I put this on today and the roots are now ginger and the rest is a lovely shade of blonde. My question is will a normal blonde hair dye fix the root colour or am I going to have to bleach it again (after leaving it for a while first of course)?

Thank you!

I did this!

Please don't OP.

My hair was ruined for months! It snapped it was brittle, it stuck out at really odd angles because it was so dry!

It looked like I had weird odd layers in it due to the breakages.

It's only now getting in a better xo diction and that's because I've had nothing put on it in ages.

Seriously it was the worst thing ever, I had long soft hair before this, I was I tears a lot of the time because of it.

Please don't do it to yourself

curtainpole12 · 09/06/2019 23:03

It's also so thin now, I went from a mane of hair to what I can only describe as a thin veil of hair.

I cannot stress to you enough to not do this.

Just leave it. No more bleach

Nogodsnomasters · 09/06/2019 23:05

littlelongdog christ that video is horrifying! I wonder how much over processing they did before it got to the break off stage, I guess everyones hair has its own limits. As a teenager I had many a hair colour, mostly bright reds or pinks and a few bleachings in between so that pink would stay the same tone.

I ruined my hair by bleaching at home, I looked lile Shirley from Eastenders!!
But that was 4/5 lots of bleach all over, 2 dyes and using a toner with every wash plus my hair was already damaged - all of this was also in the space of around a week!

The second time I went blonde without going to a hairdressers was as follows -
Day 1: Bleach with max vol (40% i think?)B Blonde leave on for maximum time limit with plastic bag over my hair then for the last 2 mins using the hair dryer all over for gentle heat (with the bag still on)
Wash, condition, toner(I used paintbox lilac toner) then after washing use a combination of Amla oil mixed with castor oil as a deep treatment, wrap hair again after braiding loosely, leave oil on 2 days then wash.
Day 3: use max vol again bleach BUT only leave on for maximum 15-20mins, with bag but no heat.
Wash and use toner again and apply oil as a leave in not deep treatment.

After this I went from dark brown to very pale blonde with minimum damage but everyone's hair is different.
Another tip for maintaining is add a small amount of bleach to your shampoo to create a lightening shampoo. Obviously don't use it daily but once a week should suffice.
You will need to put alot of time into it but it's alot better than ending up with extreme damage. Good luck OP Smile

Nogodsnomasters · 09/06/2019 23:32

OK after some youtubing and googling, I have changed the plan to this.... No more bleaching, use a toner and see what happens and go from there. I shall report back when there's news, I'm working all day tomorrow.

Don't bleach shampoo it, will nip your fingertips, your scalp and your eyes.

Ukelou · 10/06/2019 01:03

I wonder if you could get it corrected cheaply by a student hairdresser at a hairdressers who needs to learn colour correct but will obvs be supervised. I would suggest a college but they will probs be shut for summer now.

Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 07:11

I don't know of any hairdressing colleges locally but that is a great suggestion, probably would be the perfect solution. God I can't believe I have to go to work like this today, oh and drop my ds to school 🙀

Op a toner won’t do a thing to that orange. Don’t waste your money on one.

The quality of professional products is far superior to what’s available in the chemist or supermarket but it’s mainly that a hairdresser will know when to stop, honestly the safest thing for your hair would be to darken those roots back down again

Dontthinkofthegame · 10/06/2019 08:40

I have died my hair at home from dark brown to blonde a few times and honestly if you buy the right products and do some research it’s fine.
You need to be prepared to go through the horrible not nice colour ginger, ginger phase but it can be done without ruining your hair.

You need to bleach (which you have done)
Leave for a week using purple shampoo and intensive purple conditioner
Re-die with bleach again but keep a really close eye on it as it is developing and check you hair doesn’t get ‘springy’
Leave for a week again conditioning as much as you can with masks etc
Use Wella Colour charm toner in T18 if your hair is brassy T14 if it is yellow with a 20 developer.
Use the colour charm toner once a week until it is toned to the colour you want.

Saying this it depends if you have decent hair or thin/very dry/very damaged hair, if so that I would go to a salon otherwise you should be absolutely fine doing it yourself.

You need to get it as blonde as you can/want and then tone it to the final colour you want. Remember the toner will ‘lift’ the colour slightly whilst taking out the brassiness.
If it goes too bright or too silvery then the T15 should calm it down.

If you don’t feel confident doing this then go to a salon but a quick google search should give you a really good idea on how to do it yourself without killing your hair.

Dontthinkofthegame · 10/06/2019 08:43

‘Op a toner won’t do a thing to that orange. Don’t waste your money on one.’

Yes it will,
OP Colour charm toner with 20 developer would help.

My hair was much worse then OP’s and a toner on her hair would help with the brassy colour. It won’t lift it to the blonde she wants but it would definitely take out some of the brassiness, if she used it regularly it would eventually take out all of the orange colour.

Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 08:51

I had a look at a blog a lady did on the colour charm range and her before pic was very like mine and her after pic was a lot less orange. I've never used a toner before so am I going for t18 then? I have access to a small boots shop after work. I actually also have access to a salon supply shop that's open to the public but I honestly wouldn't have a clue what to look for and the owner is an older gentleman so I don't think he could advise very well.

OP posts:
Dontthinkofthegame · 10/06/2019 08:57

Unfortunately I have only found the Colour Charm Online.
I tend to get mine from EBay and the Welloxon perfect 6% 20vol developer.

I would go for the T18, I use two big desert spoons of the colour and four of the developer, leave for 30 mins. It will take a few goes so I would buy a couple of the T18 (the developer comes in a big bottle and one will last ages) and go from there.

Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 09:07

I've found a Jerome Russel bblonde toner in platinum colour non peroxide in b&m before work - should I go for it? I've already had 3 funny looks at school drop off and I work with the public so it's not just colleagues I have to deal with today cringe

OP posts:
blueberry25 · 10/06/2019 09:11

When I did this years ago, I managed to get to platinum blonde but my hair fell out and I was so close to shaving it all off. It came off in clumps and it was such an awful situation. What would you do if this happened to you before work? Shock

Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 09:15

I'm not putting the toner on before work, where would I was it off, I'm literally walking through the door of work now lol. I meant should I go for it as in purchase that one. I bought it anyway it was only £3.50 but I'll also check in boots after work to see if I can find the Wella one.

OP posts:
Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 09:18

I meant wash it off sorry

OP posts:
PatoPotato · 10/06/2019 10:19

If you don't want to bleach it again then you need to choose a brown colour to remove the red. If you try to put a blonde on it, it will do nothing.

Dontthinkofthegame · 10/06/2019 10:20

I didn’t find any other toner that worked tbh.

Personally I would just live with it for now, buy the Wella toner and wait or if that’s not an option then I think you’ll have to get a salon appointment to fix it.

I can’t advise on the Jerome Russell one as I’ve never used it, but looking at the description online I think the problem with it is that the colour will be wrong. You need an cool ash colour to get rid of the brassiness but a slightly different ash colour if it is more yellow. With the Wella ones they have different colour toners not just ‘whack it on bleach’ colour. I don’t think platinum is going to get rid of the brassiness, but again I’ve never tried it so good luck Grin

Hotpinkangel19 · 10/06/2019 10:20

OP just get the Jerome russell and lots of conditioner and toner. I have rescued my hair disasters before doing this, but just don't do it again! Following for updates x

LorelaiRoryEmily · 10/06/2019 10:23

@dontthinkofthegame
I have been hairdressing for 21 years and have a colour master qualification. I have never seen a toner do enough to a colour like that without re bleaching first. It’s far too warm.

Clearly you know far more than me though so I won’t offer any more adviceWink

LorelaiRoryEmily · 10/06/2019 10:24

Oh and it’s called 20vol or 6% not 20 developer. Just FYI

Nogodsnomasters · 10/06/2019 11:05

So many different opinions on which step to take next lol I don't know what to do! I've bought the Jerome toner and after work I'll look in boots and see if they have anything better looking. Shall update tonight when whatever I choose is on my head!

Dontthinkofthegame · 10/06/2019 11:51

LorelaiRoryEmily

I’m sure you’re very good at colouring hair, I’ve not said otherwise.

If you look at my other posts you’ll see I did call it 6% 20vol Welloxon Perfect developer earlier up thread but thought it overkill to keep typing out the whole name and description.

I can absolutely tell you that a Toner in the correct shade with the correct developer will change OP hair colour. I’m sorry if you didn’t realise this but maybe you haven’t ever used the Wella toners?
