Bleached hair, posting for traffic

Didn't know where to put this so feel free to move it MN if there is a hair section that I couldn't find lol but posting for traffic.

I previously had a dark brown root smudge leading into blonde hair at the bottom, my hair is not long, collar bone length. This colour was done at the hairdressers but was costing me £60 for this plus a trim every 3 months and I just can't afford it anymore.

Quite liked the blonde at the bottom and decided for the summer I'd like to go full head blonde so I bought a blonde hair dye thinking since most of the hair was that colour anyway it'd be OK... it was not OK, it went a weird pale brown all over, not even a nice shade of brown at all. So I decided to buy a pre-lightner (basically bleach I think it was), I put this on today and the roots are now ginger and the rest is a lovely shade of blonde. My question is will a normal blonde hair dye fix the root colour or am I going to have to bleach it again (after leaving it for a while first of course)?

Thank you!

hairwizzard you have understood perfectly. I know any decent hairdresser will advise going back to a hairdresser but I just cannot afford this at the minute and certainly not for the foreseeable future. I refuse to believe there is no way to make them match at home haha (being lighthearted here). Surely a toner or something will take the orange away and then I can use another box dye on it of the number 11 variety? But only dye the roots?

Hi op
You need to put a toner on it.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 09/06/2019 22:10

Op you need to go to a hairdresser to fix that.
And in reply to your question (what the feck are hairdressers using that we can’t get our hands on?)

Apart from professional products we are using our training! Our knowledge of how products work, how they’ll react with what’s in the hair already and how to best get you what you want without compromising your hair. We are trained professionals!

deste · 09/06/2019 22:11

Dye won’t make your hair lighter, only bleach will do that. With that colour I would be tempted to go darker.

Nogodsnomasters · 09/06/2019 22:12

This was it before the whole debacle so it really was quite blonde to start with bar the roots.

Number 11 won't do anything to hair dyed darker than a base 11 which is what you have. Your base there looks about an 8 so you need to lift it at least 3 shades to get to an 11 then you need a toner to take out the yellowy blonde you will be left with when you get to 11.

The only thing that will get you there is bleach. A pp suggested Jerome Russel, I've used these before and they do different strength peroxides you buy separately and if I remember rightly do 6, 9 and 12%. A box of Jerome Russel bleach and 9% peroxide on for about 20mins - half hour might get you close to an 11. You might need longer. Then u would get something like 10.1 to tone out the yellow.

Rarfy · 09/06/2019 22:14

My earlier suggestion with the 7.0 dye would take it back similar to your last pic.

Guest8989 · 09/06/2019 22:14

OP you do need to see a professional for the integrity of your hairs structure. You’ve already processed it with a dye and a bleach - it’s already more than enough in a short time. A toner will not save you here, it’ll just add more problems and more damage. If you can’t afford to have it maintained then you need something lower maintainence

Rarfy · 09/06/2019 22:15

Also beware blrqch directly on your scalp burns like a mother... And you will likely end up with a scabby scalp after.

Guest8989 · 09/06/2019 22:15

Also do not bleach it yourself again!!!! Shock

Rarfy · 09/06/2019 22:17

But I agree with @Guest8989. Your hair could become very damaged and snap off.

Nogodsnomasters · 09/06/2019 22:21

OK so plan is, bleach again until yellowy/white, toner to take out the yellow, then 10 or 11 dye to make it a proper colour. Then continue purple shampoo and repeat same dye colour every 6 weeks until autumn.

To the professionals who have posted thank you for the advice but I just don't have the finances to go to the salon for a fix anymore.

Anyone fancy updates as I go through the above plan? Lol. And advice on how long to leave between each of the steps in the plan?

Ah it looked real nice in your before photo.

I would go back to the hairdresser and get it sorted once you have brought all that will be needed ,plus the two dyes you have already used ,it will end up same price as having just gone to the hairdresser in yhe 1st place.

PatoPotato · 09/06/2019 22:22

In order to get your hair the colour of blonde on the picture of a box of hair dye you need to keep bleaching it until it gets pretty much white. From that point you put a box of blonde dye on it which will act as a toner. If you try to dye it now, it will just stay red.

So you need to bleach your hair at least one more time, then dye it.

I've spent £12.50 so far. The hair feels healthy (for the time being) since it's short and I had a trim last month. I was expecting it to feel like straw straight after the bleaching but it genuinely doesn't. I don't want to go back to the smudge now, I liked it but when I tied it back in a pony (which for work was often) it looked like I had brown hair with a blonde poky bit at the back because its a short ponytail.

Sorry for repeat post there. Yup, patopatato I intend to get a Jerome Russel bleach and do that first as advised by a pp, then I will tone it and then dye it.

Hohofortherobbers · 09/06/2019 22:36

Your roots in before pic are not a bad colour, if you're looking to save money just dye it dark blonde/ light brown all over at home then in months to come get some subtle highlights pug in professionally

Boneshere · 09/06/2019 22:40

Do not bleach again.

At most use a toner like T18 from Wella with the lowest developer on the market... 3 vol.

Buy the matrix brass off conditioning mask. Leave it on for 10 mins rinse and blow dry. If it needs longer do it again. That stuff is the best.

Do not use blue shampoo, it is very drying on bleached hair especially if you've been at it at home.

Letitbegin · 09/06/2019 22:41

£60 every 3 months is cheap, dying your roots 'blonde' you will need it done much more often than this. Toner/silver shampoo won't work as its not light enough. You will have to bleach it again but it's going to take a bit to get it to a nice blonde. Trouble is putting bleach right on the scalp it's always going to be really brassy 🙈 and will be really difficult to match the ends.

LittleLongDog · 09/06/2019 22:44

Oh OP please don’t let your hair all break off. Keep us updated.

And.... it says funny in the title but if it was my hair I would be crying:

Nogodsnomasters · 09/06/2019 22:46

Well it may be cheap for some but unfortunately it's £60 every 3 months that I simply can't afford right now so I'd much rather spend £8.50 on a box dye every 4-6 weeks. I don't quite understand why some posters are adamant I shouldn't bleach it again to lift the orange? I know of course it damages hair, but surely no more so than the salons bleach they would have been using on it? Or is the commercial bleach of a different quality?

PoppadomPeach · 09/06/2019 22:50

Please just YouTube Brad Mondo and watch what some home bleaching jobs result in.

Be very, very careful. Double processing your hair, then putting a box dye on top is going to kill it. Especially in such short succession.
Use a decent conditioning mask and leave it in for as long as possible - leave a good period of time between bleaching/colouring as well.

1vandal2 · 09/06/2019 22:52

Spend a few hours watching professional hair dyeing videos on YouTube. It's worth it

PoppadomPeach · 09/06/2019 22:53

The difference is that hairdressers know when your hair has had enough. You'll have had strand and patch tests, they'll know the type and porosity of your hair.
It's impossible to know these things when untrained.
