I have no idea if this is typical but he just tweeted that London isn't an English city any more
What is it then pray tell? What's not English about it??

I’m a Londoner. I agree with him.

sonlypuppyfat · 29/05/2019 23:08

Well I don't think he's speaking in code

drspouse · 29/05/2019 23:11

Are people not white enough for him?
Because most people speak English.

He didn't say it was a bad thing did he? London is extremely multi cultural and I'm sure ive read a figure of about 50%, possibly just over 50% of inhabitants aren't U.K. nationals. I think it's fab it's such a diverse city.

IsabellaLinton · 29/05/2019 23:12

Why is everyone so quick to pile on anyone of a different opinion, before first wondering why they’ve arrived at that conclusion? John Cleese isn’t a racist bigot by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe - just maybe - he has a point worth discussing?

Ohyesiam · 29/05/2019 23:12

Where’s it moved to?

Willyoubuymeahouseofgold · 29/05/2019 23:13

Hmmm... you've surely had a couple of years notice to be disappointed in him.
He's an odious racist twat!

I agree with him too.

Kingslayer · 29/05/2019 23:15

Because most people speak English.

do they though?

NicoAndTheNiners · 29/05/2019 23:15

Ive no idea if he's racist, I don't like some stuff ive seen him write about women before so I suspect he could well be a total twat.

I thought he was discussing the fact that while most of the U.K. (or England anyway) voted for Brexit, London voted remain. And that this could be explained due to it being a more diverse, accepting city due to its wide range of inhabitants compared to other parts of England?

PickAChew · 29/05/2019 23:16

That'll be the John Cleese who lives abroad, now, anyhow?

goodwinter · 29/05/2019 23:17

The full wording of the tweet is confusing and I'm not sure what point he's trying to make...

NetballHoop · 29/05/2019 23:18

London isn't an an English city. It's a world city.
It has been more than just an English city for hundreds of years. Apart from anything else it is the capital of the UK of which England is only one bit.

CaptSkippy · 29/05/2019 23:18

Considering England's colonial history, I can't think of a more English thing than having a multicultural capital.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/05/2019 23:21

Since he is moving out, to the Caribbean I believe, I wonder if the locals will be complaining about the bloody foreigners?

IsabellaLinton · 29/05/2019 23:23

@LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD

One single solitary man?

Isatis · 29/05/2019 23:26

It's London's diversity and acceptance of diversity which makes it quintessentially British.

Mookie81 · 29/05/2019 23:26

I'm English, non-white and living in London and completely agree with him.
There can't be a rational, civilised discussion about this issue when anyone who questions it gets shouted down as racist. Lots of those people might be. Many of them are not. It's a valid opinion and one that should open a dialogue.

Halo84 · 29/05/2019 23:26

He didn’t complain though, did he?

IsabellaLinton · 29/05/2019 23:30

@Mookie81

I agree with every word!

Walkingdeadfangirl · 29/05/2019 23:30

Back when we had free speech we were able to state facts. These days we have the thought police #1984

Bicyclethief · 29/05/2019 23:31

I agree too and I'm not English. London has changed enormously in the last 30 years. In my view it's become more divided.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 29/05/2019 23:35

It's a laugh he's saying that while now living on the Caribbean island of Nevis! A tad hypocritical.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 29/05/2019 23:35

London's an English city because it is in England.
It's also a British city, a European city, and one of the biggest cities in the whole world. So it has people from all over the world living and working in it.
I think it's great.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 29/05/2019 23:36

IsabellaLinton - is he the only one then? I suspect not - I assume it’s a wee tax haven for the rich folks.
