To ask what's a "chore" you never do?

Just wondering what chores, or jobs as we call them, you never do? Whether it's one nobody in your household does or one that is just someone else's job in your dynamic?

We never iron. All our clothes come straight out the wash and are folded or put on hangers and put away. I don't work and DP gets to wear jeans and a t shirt to work so we don't really have things that need to be ironed. We own an iron but it's sat in the same spot for over 6 months.

So what's a job you never do in your own home? Bins out? Dusting? Changing the bed sheets? Or am I just very relaxed about clothing?

Ironing

I've absolutely loved reading through all your posts, thank you! It seems like a lot of you have DPs that enjoy lots of jobs! You're so lucky!

All you people who manage single-handedly, I applaud you massively. I don't know how you keep on top of everything, it must be exhausting. Hats off to you! Thanks

How is "making the bed" even a chore? Do people have blankets and shees that have to be tucked in? I just have a duvet. Get out of bed, grab the duvet, shake it in one move so that it lands in the right position on the bed, done in literally 2 seconds.

Disfordarkchocolate · 29/05/2019 10:05

Abouttoblow school trousers, hung upside down, using a trouser hanger. Polo shirts, shaken then put on a hanger in a breeze, same for school jumpers. No need to iron at all.

EducatingArti · 29/05/2019 10:10

If I want it done, I have to do it. Every single thing! No chance here of being fussy about handling bins!

SamStephens · 29/05/2019 10:11

Iron. I don’t even buy clothes that need ironing. Don’t own one, never want to. I have a clothes steamer that has never been out of the box. Absolutely loathe it.

PuppyMonkey · 29/05/2019 10:17

Lol at not believing in people who don’t iron.Grin

DP we’re talking about some curtains we put up in our living room soon after we moved into the house - we’ve never ever taken them down to wash. We moved in 20 years ago. Blush

rosie1959 · 29/05/2019 10:28

Love the idea of not ironing but it's not likely to happen my DH wears 100% cotton polo shirts chinos and shorts however you hang them they need ironing to look presentable Most of my stuff is also cotton or linen
Have a few Jersey dresses which still look that bit smarter with a press
Have had plenty of practice over the last 40 years or so

PuppyMonkey · 29/05/2019 10:32

You’re probably not hanging things properly if they still “need ironing.” The few creases that remain will drop out when you wear the clothing. You just need to BELIEVE.Grin

Popuppippa · 29/05/2019 10:35

A tumble dryer would sort that out. I tumble cotton t-shirts, polo shirts and shirts (and most other things Grin). Folded slightly warm from the dryer they don't need ironing. Anything crumpled can go in the dryer, lightly sprayed with water and come out pristine after a 10 min burst.

Items can be hung on a hanger straight from the washing machine. I shake them out, stretch the fabric to remove creases and hang above a radiator. At one point we got through 25 shirts minimum a week - DH and 4 kids. Never ironed a single one!

I love the idea of straighteners to do collar/cuffs mentioned by a pp - genius!

rosie1959 · 29/05/2019 10:36

I have tried all ways of hanging usually from the bottom of on a coat hanger to dry outside they cannot be tumble dried
Have been doing it a while as I said 60 last birthday
Not cheep fabric either the polos are raging bull at £60 a pop

ladybee28 · 29/05/2019 10:42

@mawof3soontobe I just saw your response - are you some kind of GENIUS? That's such a clever idea! Definitely more expensive than DP's fingers and an old fork, but much less ralph-y and cleans my conscience Grin

PuppyMonkey · 29/05/2019 10:43

I have perfected the art of briefly stretching the damp fabric out before hanging using my hand or fist. It’s very satisfying once you get it right.

Namechange8471 · 29/05/2019 11:07

I do:

Laundry
Ironing

Dp does:

Gardening (front and back)
Bins out
Make beds

We both do:

Hoovering
Polishing
Dog waking
Dog feeding
Pick dog shit up
Cooking
Wash pots

Aprillygirl · 29/05/2019 11:35

I can't remember the last time I ironed. I am very careful to buy clothes that don't really need it and my kids are old enough to do their own if they're not happy with the slightly crumpled look.

mawof3soontobe · 29/05/2019 13:11

@ladybee28 I have to confess I stole the idea from someone on Instagrams cleaning account Blush you can pick it up relatively cheap in B&M home bargains etc!

AlexaAmbidextra · 29/05/2019 14:08

I rarely iron. I tumble most stuff and then hang or fold. I don’t have the luxury of refusing to do other stuff as I live alone. I do the bare minimum though to keep both me and the house looking good. Life’s too short to wash a skirting board.

thecatsthecats · 29/05/2019 15:58

Something you see on "mental load" checklists: "renewing insurance" and "managing finances".

Occasionally will do a half arsed quote when the renewal quite comes in, but we seem to plumb the bottom end of the market for these services anyway, and if the price is within a tenner of the previous year, I don't even check.

Meal planning too. DH and I take turns to do the online shop, and just work on an ad hoc basis with what turns up. DH complains that I buy ingredients, I complain that he buys junk. Since we take turns, it all evens out, and nobody has to menu plan.

I think we skip a lot of the mental load by being lazy fuckers with low standards and a lot of direct debits.

LittleGinBigGin · 29/05/2019 16:15

I don’t iron Blush dh does when he needs something (not very often)

I never do the bins either...including emptying the kitchen bin.

I’m also adverse to dusting I hate dusting it’s the one thing I absolutely hate with a passion.

ChodeofChodeHall · 29/05/2019 16:19

Ironing: such a waste of time! How on earth do people find the motivation to iron?

BossAssBitch · 29/05/2019 16:22

Never do the bins - DH does it
Never clean - cleaner does it
Never hoover and clean the floors in between cleaner visis - DH does it
Never iron - cleaner does it / DH does it if I need something cleaner hasn't done
Never wash clothes - DH does it

I work long hours outside of the home. DH works from home a lot and does a lot of our chores in between working. I work longer hours than him so it all works out fairly

ChodeofChodeHall · 29/05/2019 16:23

I find it really hard to believe that people don't iron and go out/go to work/send their kids to school in clothing that creased. I don't believe that at all.

Just goes to show we're getting away with it without anyone noticing, eh?

BossAssBitch · 29/05/2019 16:24

Because my clothes look shit and scruffy if not ironed! I don't understand how people don't iron their clothes. I don't iron jeans or anthing daft like that but what about work skirts, dresses, blouses and shirts?!
