Woman letting dog on train seat

snookerloopynutsarewe · 06/05/2019 13:55

I've just got an a (quite busy) train and a woman has got on with her spaniel sized dog and let it jump straight up on the seat. I asked her if she thought that was ok and she got a bit arsey and told me that she was going to put a blanket down for it (she hadn't) and that she'd paid for a ticket for the dog, which wasn't really what I was getting at. Was IBU? Is it is ok to have a dog on a seat on public transport?

I don't think that's OK. It's unhygienic and I'd be very annoyed if the train was busy and I couldn't get a seat but a dog had one.

CurtainsOpen · 06/05/2019 14:00

Not a DOG! Argh!

SingingSands · 06/05/2019 14:01

Dogs don't need to sit on seats. Seats are for people.

Takethebuscuitandthesink · 06/05/2019 14:05

I am a massive dog lover. If there are other seats available then no problem but if there are people who need a seat (such as elderly people or disabled people) then you should sit the dog on your knee of if it is too big on the floor, then offer the seat to the person who needs it.

SweetPetrichor · 06/05/2019 14:06

Provided there wasn't people standing so that a dog could sit, I couldn't really bring myself to care. Some right skanky people sit on the seats...the dogs probably cleaner than many of them!

Singlenotsingle · 06/05/2019 14:07

People before 🐕 s. If someone needs a seat, she should hold the dog on her lap.

DaisiesAreOurSilver · 06/05/2019 14:07

Gross.

lalaloopyhead · 06/05/2019 14:08

I bet you 50p she hadn't bought a ticket for her dog! I'm not precious about dirt but I can't think it a great idea for a dog to be on a seat. Totally unnecessary as well.

PristineCondition · 06/05/2019 14:09

Have you seen the state of train/bus seats.
People spill put dirty shoes bags ect on there.

snookerloopynutsarewe · 06/05/2019 14:10

There are a few people standing but nobody who appears to be in major need.

Interesting point about some people not being particularly clean. Although generally they will be wearing clothes and not putting their bear arse on the seat.

I just thought it a bit weird.

I don't think dogs are any less hygienic than dirty shoes, wet jackets and god knows what else that ends up on those seats.

However I wouldn't let my dog on a seat without a blanket, and if the train was busy he'd certainly go on the floor.

Mel6l72 · 06/05/2019 14:12

I see people put their shoes on seats often. I can't imagine the dog would be any less clean than that

MenuPlant · 06/05/2019 14:12

People were standing while the dog had a seat?

That's a new one on me!

Get dogs on the tube sometimes never seen one be given a seat to itself!

Calatonia · 06/05/2019 14:12

I was on a nearly empty bus the other day and a bloke got on with an adorable spaniel-type puppy which he sat on his lap despite there being plenty of room. He had the right attitude. Your fellow passenger obviously doesn't, OP.

MenuPlant · 06/05/2019 14:13

You shouldn't put feet on seats either.

I hate that.

cantfindname · 06/05/2019 14:14

I wouldn't want my dog sitting his bare arse on a filthy train seat!!

Villanellesproudmum · 06/05/2019 14:14

Dogs travel free don’t they, ours has only been on a train once and we didn’t pay. She did sit on my lap though because she couldn’t fit where my feet go. Couldn’t go in the aisle for obvious reasons.

Grinchly · 06/05/2019 14:15

No different to letting a child puts its shoes on there, spilling its food and drinks, and often yelling and shrieking to boot.

Know which I'd preferSmile

freetone · 06/05/2019 14:16

YANBHU. If I saw someone with their feet on a chair I would bring them up on it, the same if there was a dog sat on one. Is the dog a paying customer? No so it shouldn’t take up valuable seats for actual customers. The attitude that ‘dogs have the same rights as humans’ really needs to die a hard death. Some people’s dogs are so dirty if they don’t look after them properly. I had to help someone with severe depression and their dogs hadn’t been bathed in 4 years. They had spent the 4 years running round a house and garden covered in shit, piss and disease. The smell of them was something like never before. The white leather sofas were black from where they had been walking on them. So no, dogs shouldn’t sit on public seats

freetone · 06/05/2019 14:16

Presumably most children don’t walk around in their own faeces and urine!

Grinchly · 06/05/2019 14:19

re walking in faeces and urine- none of my dogs has ever done that.

The newer human models on the other hand, have plastic sacks of their own faeces and urine strapped to their arses...

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 06/05/2019 14:19

Yes, I too am a dog-lover in case any such disclaimer is necessary.

Not okay. Same goes for bags and feet, anti-social drinking (becoming more and more of a problem on trains) or boarding with a Big Mac, stinking out the carriage and making the rest of the passengers feel sick. All this applies even if there are other seats available. But the issue here is I doubt there's much a casual bystander can do about it. What exactly do you do with this level of rudeness, 'screw everybody else' attitude and grandiose sense of entitlement?

These people are beyond redemption.

PunkRockHippy · 06/05/2019 14:20

Where are you that you need to buy tickets for dogs? I have taken my dogs on many trains in the U.K. locally and nationally and they’ve only ever needed their own ticket on a novelty steam railway, not normal public transport. Dogs travel free at the discretion of whoever’s in charge (bus driver, train guard etc).

Dogs on the floor and as out-of-the-way as possible, my old dog was usually between my legs/under my seat, I’d usually try and get a table seat so she could sit under there. My current dog is tiny, she usually sits on my knee. Definitely no dogs on seats.

MenuPlant · 06/05/2019 14:20

See the traditional child hating post is up.

Always a joy to see on mumsnet.

Yes yes you hate kids, they're all disgusting Little fuckers that should be preferably not seen And not heard, the world would be a better place without them. Least that should be done is ban them from all public places till 18. The Romanians under ceacescu had the right idea with their orphanages. Etc etc etc

It's boring goady and dull.

Yes lots of people hate kids but as small humans unfortunately there will sometimes be children around.
