Woman letting dog on train seat

I've just got an a (quite busy) train and a woman has got on with her spaniel sized dog and let it jump straight up on the seat. I asked her if she thought that was ok and she got a bit arsey and told me that she was going to put a blanket down for it (she hadn't) and that she'd paid for a ticket for the dog, which wasn't really what I was getting at. Was IBU? Is it is ok to have a dog on a seat on public transport?

Menuplant, I said a child (and I am talking fairly young child) should sit on the adult's lap. I never said the child should stand did I?

Almost every time me and DH get the tube there are young children sitting on seats and their parents have seats too. Both me and DH have trouble standing for a length of time and are in our 60's. Good manners would be to put their child on their lap.

When we used to take our nieces on buses, trains or tubes we would always sit them on our laps if there were people standing regardless of the standing peoples' ages.

BBCONEANDTWO · 06/05/2019 19:54

YANBU. The would annoy me - plus what if you've got black trousers on and after the dog has left it's seat you sit on it. You'd be covered in in dog hairs.

oldclairdelaloon · 06/05/2019 20:07

@IncrediblySadToo what's on the average train seat?

PunkRockHippy · 06/05/2019 20:34

I remember a thing going around years ago (I guess it was a meme, but we didn’t say meme back in the day) about how the average London tube seat contained the urine/faeces/sweat/semen from however many (scary number) of humans, plus however many dead mice and rats. Luffly.

adaline · 06/05/2019 20:48

@oldclairdelaloon you ask what's on the average train seat?

Let's see.

  • All the dirt that people have trodden in before getting on the train (because people do put their feet on the seats).
  • Dirt from luggage/bags that have been sat on platforms or wheeled/dragged along public roads, that will be covered in animal wee/poo, vomit, dirt from car tires, old food/drink that's been dropped everywhere etc.
  • Dirt from jackets etc. that people have worn outside - that have brushed against dirty walls, lampposts, doors, other people.
  • Animal hair (due to people owning shedding pets)
  • Sweat from sweaty bodies. Not everyone washes their hands, so add on urine/faecal matter from that too.
  • Spilt drinks/food.
  • Snot etc. from people who've coughed and sneezed without covering their hands, or who have wiped their dirty hands on their trousers/the seat.
  • Children who've crawled over the floor and who kneel on the seats.
  • Hair that's fallen out of people's heads, dead skin cells, fingernail clippings and goodness knows what else.

Public transport is hardly the most hygienic place!

Cryalot2 · 06/05/2019 21:20

As a dog lover and owner of a small house dog I still think she should have put the blanket down first. Perhaps there needs to be a notice to such.
But not all dogs are dirty, is it any worse than those who change shitty nappies on seats without using a mat?
There are also some people who are not that clean and do go commando .

Yabbers · 06/05/2019 22:16

we stand, but when he is older and needs it I will totally ensure he gets a seat)
Even older dogs can lie on the floor.

Horall · 06/05/2019 22:23

I have an allergy to dogs (and cats), I would be in a terrible state if I sat on a seat that a dog had been sat on. My allergy effects my breathing.
It’s happened on trains before, when I have been sat down and someone with a dog comes and sits across from me, it’s hard to know what to do ... I just end up moving. The other week I was on a packed train and someone got on with a cat, in a backpack. No other seats, but luckily they only went one stop.
Nothing against dogs on trains, for us allergy sufferers, would be nice if they kept cats and dogs in a particularly carriage.

StoneofDestiny · 07/05/2019 00:19

A dog doesn't wipe its arse or clean pee of its bits - so no, I'd rather not sit on a seat a naked unwiped bottom or urine exit point has been sat on previously!

I'm also allergic to dogs. Really can't believe that some people here think that it's ok.

fluorescentorange · 07/05/2019 06:53

I travel with my dog on the train a lot, I am not sure it’s possible to buy a ticket!
How bad, she must realise people need to sit on there and may not want covering in hair.

Nodnol · 07/05/2019 07:27

We can’t take animals on any public transport here, unless it’s a service animal.

If she paid for the dogs ticket then the dog gets a seat.

DontVisitMe · 07/05/2019 08:22

I'd much rather sit next to a dog than a person. People are gross.

MenuPlant · 07/05/2019 15:26

It's OK, for those of you with allergies that affect your breathing.

Don't visit me has started that's fine as you are 'gross' anyway. I expect your laboured breathing would really get on her tits so she hoping it would be severe enough to have you carted off the train or, maybe, permanently silenced.

StoneofDestiny · 07/05/2019 15:27

DontVisitMe
Do you include yourself in the collective judgement ‘people are gross’?

MenuPlant · 07/05/2019 15:27

Nodnol over and above humans who had also paid for a ticket?

MenuPlant · 07/05/2019 15:29

Dontvisitme may have been referring to the noisy breathing / wheezing of those with allergies to animal hair.

Strugglingtodomybest · 07/05/2019 15:31

It wouldn't bother me, I'd rather sit next to the dog than someone else anyway.

GreytExpectations · 07/05/2019 15:41

I'm laughing at all these "Open, unwashed arse-holes" comments. Yes, because all dogs are just walking around covered in shit and piss Hmm

I do agree that dogs shouldn't take up the seat if passengers are standing. Also, that woman wasn't telling the truth, dogs travel for free so she wouldn't have paid for a ticket.

stucknoue · 07/05/2019 16:02

If she really bought a ticket with a seat reservation then I suppose it's ok, but she should have put a blanket down

BossAssBitch · 07/05/2019 16:47

TheInvestigator

I told one of my kids to get off their seat so a dog could sit on it!! The owner didn't have a seat either, but the dog was getting stomped on and bashed about and it was really just not nice to see. The poor thing looked really scared. So I told my kid to shift for the dog to have some space!!

What a thoughtful person you are. Being kind to animals sends a v positive message to your children Smile

MenuPlant · 07/05/2019 16:59

Interestingly most threads on here say children should not be accorded the same care on public transport.

Dogs over kids and adults then. That is the MN way.

Jemima232 · 07/05/2019 16:59

The dog's owner was lying about paying for a ticket for the dog.

OneStepSideways · 07/05/2019 17:01

I think it's disgusting to let the dog sit on the seat without a blanket! Dogs leave hair on everything and often have bits of poo in the fur around their bottoms. And even freshly bathed dogs have that pungent dog smell that lingers on everything.
