Woman letting dog on train seat

I've just got an a (quite busy) train and a woman has got on with her spaniel sized dog and let it jump straight up on the seat. I asked her if she thought that was ok and she got a bit arsey and told me that she was going to put a blanket down for it (she hadn't) and that she'd paid for a ticket for the dog, which wasn't really what I was getting at. Was IBU? Is it is ok to have a dog on a seat on public transport?

I told one of my kids to get off their seat so a dog could sit on it!! The owner didn't have a seat either, but the dog was getting stomped on and bashed about and it was really just not nice to see. The poor thing looked really scared. So I told my kid to shift for the dog to have some space!! The rest of the carriage weren't pleased but the lady put a towel town and dog was safe!

wigglypiggly · 06/05/2019 14:53

dogs used to have to be placed in the guards carriages, I would not expect to be standing if a dog took up a seat and wouldn't particuarly want to sit next to a dog either.

PCohle · 06/05/2019 14:55

It wouldn't bother me.

Given it wasn't affecting you I'm not sure why you felt it was your place to pull her up on it.

VladmirsPoutine · 06/05/2019 17:28

Some people are more filthy than dogs. But I agree with you anyway - seats are for people not for handbags, dogs, take-aways or on one memorable occasion a mini-fridge.

AmeriAnn · 06/05/2019 17:29

Dogs should have their own seats.

Lockheart · 06/05/2019 17:31

As long as there's not people standing needing a seat I don't see the issue. Train seats aren't exactly clean to begin with, and I don't plan on eating off them or sitting on them naked.

MenuPlant · 06/05/2019 17:33

'I do think if people were standing the dog should have been on the floor or the owner's lap but I also think a child should be on the adult's lap if people are standing. I just love standing on a bus or tube while a young child has a seat'

You want a young child to stand so you can sit?

Why?

I always find this confusing. I travel on tube at rush hour and it is definitely dangerous and scary for young children to stand, and reasonable risk of getting separated from who they're with as people really push and don't look down, don't know there's a kids 3 there.

I put young children in the same category as elderly disabled pregnant etc in tube and so do others, people will offer a seat, always tbh to a little kid.

Intetested to hear why you feel otherwise. Is it just an elders /betters / respect thing?

MenuPlant · 06/05/2019 17:41

I don't take my kids on my lap as it causes me pain in old surgical wounds. I stand and kid sits. This is not unusual tbh on my tube line.

So we both stand then.

Aprillygirl · 06/05/2019 17:54

Dogs have four legs to get tired so should have priority over humans.
I jest. Much as I love dogs, they moult and I wouldn't want to sit on a seat that a dog had just sat on so YWNBU.

checkoutno3please · 06/05/2019 18:14

I've never paid for my dog when we've been on public transport.

Dog on floor and tucked out of way.

Ghanagirl · 06/05/2019 18:18

*@Takethebuscuitandthesink+
I don’t think any human should have to stand if a dog is sitting dogs don’t belong on furniture.

Ghanagirl · 06/05/2019 18:28

@MenuPlant
I struggle to understand the child haters who post on Mumsnet.

MenuPlant · 06/05/2019 18:29

They like getting a rise out of mothers is all. Gives them a bit of a laugh.

Ghanagirl · 06/05/2019 18:35

@Purplecatshopaholic
You are allowed to take up to two dogs free of charge on a normal Scotrail train service. Dogs are however not allowed on the seats. There will be a charge if you take more than two dogs.
Keep your animal on the floor.

😂😊😂🤣

If you’re aghast at a dog sitting on a train seat because of the dirt/germs etc, you’d pass out if you knew what’s on your average train seat. Trust me, a dog is the least of your problems.

It’s unusual to see, but as long as elderly/disabled/small people weren’t standing then 🤷🏻‍♀️

CherryPavlova · 06/05/2019 18:53

If I’m travelling by train it is likely to be for work. I am likely to be wearing formal work clothes in dark colours. I do not want dog hair or dog slobber all over me before a meeting. Unacceptable on so many levels.

StoneofDestiny · 06/05/2019 19:04

Seats on trains are for fare paying passengers - not for dogs.

PCohle · 06/05/2019 19:06

But the dog was a fare paying passenger - the owner had bought a ticket for it.

Sparklesocks · 06/05/2019 19:08

My DP and I got a train last week, as we were waiting to board at our stop a lady and her fluffy dog stepped off. We got on, took our seats and got on our way.

Part of the way there my DP picks up his coat and realises it’s got a bit of fluff on it. He stands up to brush it off...and his entire coat and back of his jeans are covered in dog hair! We looked at the seat and realised it was covered in dog hair, the woman who got off must’ve had her dog sitting there!

My DP was really annoyed to be covered in dog hair and I couldn’t help but think that could’ve been quite bad if someone with an allergy had sat there, so I don’t think animals should be allowed on seats.

Lifeover · 06/05/2019 19:12

Things that shouldn’t be on train seats

Feet
Luggage
Food (nor should you eat smelly food on a train)
People playing loud music esp the twats who decide to one step beyond the tinny noise coming out of the headphones and just lay music/movies for everyone to hear
People talking on phones (esp the ones trying to make themselves sound important)
People who stink of fags

A dog on the seat is preferable to these but awayson a coat or blanket to kee hair off the seat and obviously moved if a person needs a seat

ooooohbetty · 06/05/2019 19:14

I'm a dog lover but I hate dogs on seats anywhere, including in my house. I'd be very cross on public transport.

ChodeofChodeHall · 06/05/2019 19:16

Bought a ticket for it, my arse.

Herland · 06/05/2019 19:18

I don't know anyone who is allergic to humans, wet jackets or shoes... I know people who are allergic to dog hair however. One little girl very seriously.

Train seats are for humans nothing else. To put a human being in danger or even discomfort so that pet gets a comfy seat is ridiculous.
