Pockets in dresses. Sorry, but I really don't see what all the hype is about

Everyone on instagram seems to be obsessed with any garment that has pockets. I've tried to see the benefit, I really have. I've even started to post about dresses I own that have pockets, and wax lyrical about how much I love them, but I'm just not feeling it. I'd much rather carry a bag. What is the big deal with pockets??

You don't need to carry a bag Wink.

It's really annoying when you just pop out and need to carry a bag as well as otherwise there's no room for keys or phone.

GarthFunkel · 30/04/2019 13:18

MY PRECIOUS POCKETTSSSSSSEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSS

bluebluezoo · 30/04/2019 13:19

I love pockets. I hadn’t realised pockets seem to have disappeared for women over the last 20 years- as a student i never carried a bag, wallet in one pocket, keys in another.

Somewhere along the line pockets disappeared and i took to a bag as i had nowhere to put stuff.

I recently bought a skirt with pockets and it’s great to be able to go out without a bag again. Especially as if I do dc/dh immediately ask “can you put my phone/sunglasses/portable charger/purse/lip balm in you bag” and i end up with a sore shoulder and back from all the crap.

Pocketless clothes were all about appearances and not practicality. I want practical.

Pipandmum · 30/04/2019 13:19

Agree. Who cares? Some do some don’t have pockets - if you care then buy the ones that do. Especially with wedding dresses - just what do you need to be carrying that a bridesmaid etc couldn’t do for you?

AnneTwackie · 30/04/2019 13:20

The only thing you can do is post more on instagram about how much you love pockets, even if you don’t. Just stick at it until you really love them like everyone else.

Passmethecrisps · 30/04/2019 13:21

I like a place to put my hands. I am wearing a frock with pockets currently. I would never put things in there for storage but I like the fact I can do things with my hands other than fold arms

Ohhellothereladyface · 30/04/2019 13:24

Somewhere to put my hands if I feel awkward!
Somewhere to keep a tissue!

OnlineAlienator · 30/04/2019 13:24

I agree Op, and tbh have never struggled to source clothes with pockets anyway Hmm

AnneTwackie · 30/04/2019 13:24

Have you thought that you might not be putting the right things in your pockets? Perhaps you’d be more excited if you filled them with chocolate buttons? Or hamsters? You could check instagram for ideas.

BusterTheBulldog · 30/04/2019 13:25

I don’t put much in them, but like the option for hands, lip balm, a tissue

Kokeshi123 · 30/04/2019 13:28

I never put things in pockets even when I have them. Because I don't want my possessions to be forgotten about, sat on, melted, pickpocketed, put through the washing machine, the annoyance of having to check pockets and transfer things to pockets in other garments...

I keep my stuff in a bag and the bag stays by the door in the entrance hall so I can just grab my stuff and go. Sorted.

SpiderP · 30/04/2019 13:28

But doesn't it make the line of a dress all lopsided and lumpy if you put more than a tissue in its pocket?

fudgesmummy · 30/04/2019 13:28

Ohhellothereladyface
My mum used to keep her tissue tucked in her sleeve or tucked down the front of her bra, it used to embarrass me no end as a teenager!! 😁

PrettyAmazingGrace · 30/04/2019 13:31

My aunt said, who needs a bag (money) when you've got a husband?!

I was desperate to break away from that generation and take care of my own money, thanks very much.

I grew up and most women's clothes don't have pockets. Men's do. Why?

I LOVE dresses with pockets. I don't love that it's a 'thing'. It should be the norm. Why should women have to carry bags?

TheWernethWife · 30/04/2019 13:36

I don't mind pockets in a dress, I do mind pockets on t-shirts and blouses, just why?

LaCastafiore · 30/04/2019 13:39

I love them, but more because I do love how they look. I still have a bag.

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 13:39

Ah yes I do get that irritation. I'm always the one carrying the keys. But then that's because DH doesn't want keys in his pockets. And neither would I! It looks awful

I was absolutely delighted when, about 5 years ago, I bought a skirt pattern with pockets. The pockets are anchored into the front centre seam as well, so they don't flap around.

I now have 6 skirts made from the same pattern, with different fabrics.

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 13:41

@AnneTwackie THIS! Is this actually what everyone is doing?? Are there other pocket haters who are just pretending they love them for the sake of the gram??

OP posts:
OVAgroundWOMBlingfree · 30/04/2019 13:41

Wait, you posted on Instagram pretending to like pockets? That’s really fucking niche and weird.

IdaDown · 30/04/2019 13:41

I love a pocket or two & sleeves!

cakecakecheese · 30/04/2019 13:42

I love pockets in dresses! Purely so I can tell everyone it has pockets. It's the little things...

Nousernameforme · 30/04/2019 13:43

Why are you pretending to love pockets when you don't? Why is that a thing?

MariaNovella · 30/04/2019 13:43

I like dresses that are long and have both pockets and sleeves. Preferably made of silk or cotton and a really beautiful print. I have lots of them!

chipsandgin · 30/04/2019 13:44

Hate pockets myself as I find they ruin the line of dresses and skirts and I've got plenty of me going on in the hip area without added bulk - I specifically look for dresses and skirts without pockets, or if I really love a dress but it has pockets I'll get it professionally altered with the bulky pockets taken out and sewn up. Really annoying that there is a trend for them right now IMO!
