Pockets in dresses. Sorry, but I really don't see what all the hype is about

Everyone on instagram seems to be obsessed with any garment that has pockets. I've tried to see the benefit, I really have. I've even started to post about dresses I own that have pockets, and wax lyrical about how much I love them, but I'm just not feeling it. I'd much rather carry a bag. What is the big deal with pockets??

I’m not! I’m just saying, everyone seems to, and I don’t understand why

OP posts:
ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 13:59

Exactly. Which is why I didn’t bother in the end.

Oh I daren’t put my phone in my pocket. It will likely end up down the loo

What I actually need is a belt with loads of string/chains hanging from it so that I can attach all my bits and pieces to it. I am sure I have seen one in a museum - I thought it was Japanese but when I googled it I found Obi belts and I think I love these now.

Butteredghost · 30/04/2019 14:02

So OP you are saying you go on instagram posting about how you love dresses that you don't... But you think people that like pockets are the weird ones?

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 14:02

Yep. You’re right. Never feel the need to swoon over those. Except Jude Law (why wouldn’t you??!) I feel like I must be missing a point somewhere on pockets

EdWinchester · 30/04/2019 14:03

For instagrammers, it’s so you can pose with your hands in said pockets. 😬

QueenKubauOfKish · 30/04/2019 14:03

Pockets is a feminist issue

Not having pockets does disadvantage you and makes your valuables easier to grab as well. I also love the feeling of having pockets to put my hands in, in a dress or skirt. I like sewing and make a lot of clothes, so I put in lovely big pockets - bliss :)

But agree with a PP about the insanity of posting stuff on instagram you don't even think! If you don't like pockets, say that! (well at least you did say that here I suppose...)

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 14:03

Nope. I said I start to try and join in, but can’t do it, because I don’t get it

OP posts:
Felicia4 · 30/04/2019 14:04

I like pockets. You can put things in them. Who knew!

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 14:04

Aaaargh!! People, I don’t post on Instagram about pockets! I said I start to, but I don’t feel it. So I can’t. For clarity

OP posts:
ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 14:06

Now that I do get. They’re quite useful for changing up your poses Wink MAYBE THATS WHAT THEY'RE FOR! Shock

Nope, not bothered about pockets on skirts/dresses myself.

The reason being that pockets on dress/skirt fabric is generally not tough enough to hold anything but the lightest item (a tissue and a single key) unlike men's trouser pockets, which are made from a heavier weight fabric. So a pretty cotton summer dress having pockets is still useless as it won't adequately support my keys, phone, some money (as a basic, let alone lip balm/kids snack/wipes or anything else that might be useful.

Hence I care not for pockets. Small crossbody bag does the job far better. Even a tiny one!

Oh OK sorry I thought this meant you'd started doing it, as in you've already done a few posts along those lines.

outvoid · 30/04/2019 14:08

I hate carrying bags with a passion. That’s why they’re a great thing.

SoManyCoats · 30/04/2019 14:10

Also I disagree with a PP that many dresses look better with them Certain ones do, yes, mainly ones with a big flowy skirt in which the pockets disappear into the folds. But anything less flowy/billowy in the skirt and the pockets opening often sticks out awkwardly, creating a break in the seam line which is irritating on an otherwise streamlined dress.

StripeyChina · 30/04/2019 14:10

Pockets were originally (Elizabethan times anyway)
separate to dresses but attached by a cord
(Hence cutpurse or pickpocket)
I like a swishy skirt and pockets for my hands.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/04/2019 14:10

I dont see what a royal would put in their pockets though. Don't they have people to carry their stuff for them?

ActuallyMummy · 30/04/2019 14:11

Exactly. They just make your clothes look ugly

OP posts:
QueenKubauOfKish · 30/04/2019 14:11

these are nice

SoManyCoats · 30/04/2019 14:12

outvoid wearing a small crossbody is like wearing nothing though, I agree shoulder bags are not good and require frequent repositioning and a slightly hunched posture to stop them slipping down, depending on the shoulder strap etc, but crossbody bags are fab.

Putthatlampshadeonyourhead · 30/04/2019 14:12

I love pockets in my work dresses. Mainly because if my phone. Never ruined the line of my dresses. Suppose it depends on the design of the dress.

I need my phone on me at all times at work, but I hate carrying a bag and carrying it in my hands. I can carry my laptop and note books instead and/or a coffee

Woofbloodywoof · 30/04/2019 14:13

At the risk of sounding like a crazy person, I honestly think pockets are a feminist issue. Blokes by and large would not consider trousers or jackets without pockets, would they? (Where would they put those pesky Kleenex and train tickets that always disintegrate in the washing machine...) I hate handbags, hate having too much crap (never succumbed to bulky nappy bags when mine were small either) so pockets are a serious consideration in any item of clothing I buy. They’re also great for a secret chocolate stash DH and kids can’t get their hands on. Smile

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/04/2019 14:15

If I am working at an event I can't be carrying a handbag! I need at the very least a phone/camera/pen/notebook/sheets of print offs...

I have found the Oliver Boden do nice pockets.

Woofbloodywoof · 30/04/2019 14:16

downcasteyes I too have put kittens in my pockets. My record is four.
